I need to get an Intern course of Study down on paper for our high school interns to use as job experience and for college applications. Any suggestions of things to teach them, or how to notate what they are doing? They will be working in our lab environment and doing some promotion and learning using online communities and web based research to do some of their learning.

The only things I know about interns don't work with high school students. 🙂

What about making them produce a blog of their internship experience?

What about posting their progress and projects here on Mangolassi? Would be interesting to see what they were up to and good for them to get ideas and feedback.

Same thing that they will need to understand how to do when they are working professionals instead of interns.

What I've done for the intern that i've had in the past is a 2-week ridealong to start with. They sit with you at your desk for the few days, then once you know they have a feel for what's going on, set them up with a computer at your desk so that you can start have them doing things under close supervision. At the end of the two weeks, if they're more independent, set them up at a desk nearby and start feeding them more and more basic things. As time goes on, they'll grow, and be able to do more. Expect the first couple of weeks to be really painful, as your own productivity will be incredibly hindered as they strain to grasp the basics. As an example, inside of a month, I had my intern reloading computers, fixing printer issues, and rewiring patch panels. We started going over network design, but his internship ended.

Is this lab for hardware, software, networking, or raw research?

In that case, it may make sense to stagger the interns. Until the hardware's squared away, the other stuff really can't happen. As hardware intern's finishing up their term, software intern comes in, etc.

I remember I have a lots of intern working with me for the past 3 years. So i used to teach them the following.
1.) Introduction to our environment. Since we have many operators in production area i explain to them regarding our process. What they are doing, the does and don't.Very simple but i am sure they will have an idea what exactly we are doing here.

2.)Basic introduction to our system, OS,network, etc.

3.) I will give them an instruction or documentation then later on i will ask them to try,or to follow the procedure in documentation.

4.) After few 2 or 3 days if i am confident that they can manage to answer basic questions from users i will let them assist operators.
