@scottalanmiller - I have seen you say this in other threads and I wish it were true. However, look up how many patches/updates just from MS caused wide-spread issues this year. I can say the same for Sophos UTM. I will let others be the beta testers when it comes to my company's production systems.

@scottalanmiller Right, and that is why I don't have Windows 10 AU running on any of my users' systems.
I find this hilarious. I recall the days when people wouldn't touch a MS OS until SP1 came out. 1607 is more or less service pack 2. Sadly MS has just been on a horrible ride of bad patches/updates lately!
And a lot of people wait to upgrade to a new SP, because why?

RE: Offline files nightmareposted in IT Discussion
@scottalanmiller I didn't say that either. There are levels "in-between". Usually big changes introduce bugs or kinks that need to be addressed. Some products' teams handle these better than others, in long betas but others still need a fair amount of work after general release.

@JaredBusch Microsoft doesn't make big changes between versions?

How good are the install docs for nextcloud? I setup owncloud about 2 years ago and the installation could have gone more smoothly. I don't remember exactly what it was that I had issues with but am hoping nextcloud is even better.

Veeam announced they were doing this soon, but I guess Unitrends beat them to the punch.

Is having PSTs on a shared folder still not a good idea?
THere you go.
Thought so. I am still pursuing O365, where storage of email will be a lot less of an issue.

@dafyre Good to know. I was considering owncloud then it got forked(?) to nextcloud and it is still too new for me to use in production.
I honestly haven't tried NextCloud or ownCloud yet. How is that stored, is it something you can store on-premises if needed (like downloading a server-client copy), or is it only out on someone else's servers, or what? Going to do a little research, just thought I'd ask in the mean time how it realistically looks.
Install it on your internal server... Make sure VM is configured with enough storage on the Nextcloud VM to hold everybody's files... and go.
Note: This would not something be good for syncing Outlook OSTs or files that are open all the time... But for MyDocs/Pictures/Videos, etc... Is great.

RE: Offline files nightmareposted in IT Discussion
@scottalanmiller I know it doesn't mean new, but there were some decent sized changes from what I could tell. I am optimistic, for sure.

I have seen complaints with semi-related OneDrive (and similar products), so I can't hold out any hope that there is an end-all solution.
Something similar, where it's held local but doesn't sync? Even though sync says everything is fine, or were there errors that you're aware of?
Honestly, I can't remember if errors were thrown or not. I have definitely seen errors but I can't remember if there were some that didn't have an error and had issues.

RE: Offline files nightmareposted in IT Discussion
@BBigford Yes. Where you have to blow away their local copy and have it download the entirety of their data. There are other issues, but this is one that I have seen the most of. If you want to see what you are up against, Google - OneDrive Sync issues. It may or may not be as prevalent an issue as it once was.

RE: Offline files nightmareposted in IT Discussion
@BBigford This is why I have a GPO to disable offline files. I have mostly seen it be a PITA, than actually work. I was interested in Windows Work Folders but that requires Enterprise and our laptops are only on Pro. Also, the initial server setup seemed to be pretty involved.

And in other news, @zuphzuph brings the much maligned shortened link to Mangolassi.it!
Which link shortener is it that will show you the target when hovering your mouse over the link?
None, because that's not how the technology works

I thought one of them would, tho it probably requires some client side processing to work.
Absolutely requires client side processing. A link doesn't just magically make the browser do things.
Yeah, I think this is a result of SolidWorks having their cloud hosted solution now. We'll probably see a package installer for SolidWorks on AWS in the next couple of days.
This is interesting. We have an old workstation with SW2010 on it and were looking at upgrading to the latest version (subscription model :()
