I hope to have that done by the end of this week. We have a list of sessions we would like to have but yet to have speakers for all of them!

      Spaghetti for lunch I see

Yeah but because it isn't labeled I couldn't tell you where the noodles go

I know that feeling...cable tracers outside of working hours...

I work on the weekends all the time only getting paid for 40 hours. I get my evaluation done and my average is a 4 out of 5 (basically the highest they will ever give) except they say I took 6 sick days--5 of which were cardiologist visits for genetic testing and I'm "not reliable enough". The only day I legitimately had a non-scheduled day off was because the office policy is to not come in sick.

      I'm like Wat.

You'd think they would be understanding considering all I do for this company. Smh. It makes me not want to go above and beyond. I get no credit for anything I do only attitude. Then I get annoyed that nothing is up to my standards. Maybe my expectations are too high. Idk.

      Why are you working weekends?

When I was younger I worked weekends because I was poor, the things I wanted to cost money, and I could make extra money working the weekends.. now, that's simply not the case.

And sure, while my job allows some flex time to work weekends, it's not a normal requirement of my job.

      Is it of yours?

I go above and beyond. If I see a problem I try to fix it even if it isn't a benefit to me. My work ethic isn't appreciated though unfortunately. Salary is like indentured servitude.

Note: it's not exactly a requirement but I can't realistically run this place without working weekends sometimes--to my standards. Even with me doing this I'm at the mercy of the executive director and I can't make any changes or do anything but they expect it to improve somehow.

We can argue which certs are good and which ones are bad, but they definitely aren't hurtful to you

If the IT industry were to standardize job titles, do you believe that certain certifications and/or degrees would have to be included in those descriptions?

What is the likelihood that this is even possible?

It's possible but not probable. I could see the certs being included in the job description but any good employer is going to test your knowledge in the interview. In my experience the cert just gets you in the door.

You'd have to have hundreds if not thousands of job titles to enable a companies ability to require a cert as part of the title.

      Windows Helpdesk Level 1
      Ubuntu Helpdesk level 1
      MAC helpdesk level 1
      RH helpdesk level 1
      etc

Yeah but at least those titles would be accurate. Right now we have hundreds of titles that are meaningless

I've never had an interview where they gave me lunch.

Been a long time since I had one when they didn't. I've had them where we go to a restaurant. Some where a catering crew come in for it. Some they eat in the offices. All kinds of things.

Facebook: Eat on campus to show the campus stuff
Amazon: Walk to a restaurant in the neighbourhood
      Change: Pizza at a house
BW: Catered lunch from a personal chef

Some that I remember. I know one in Cleveland the whole team went to a lunch at a restaurant and did something like pizza. Nothing fancy but a good chance for everyone to talk.

      SAM casually name dropping.....

OT: Just sorted 3 different printer tickets - one person's PC had changed the port from the IP to WSD...so switched it back and thats sorted...one department have just got a new Printer, so installed that (they replaced a network one with the "new model"...that DOESN'T have a network port, so I installed via USB cable and shared over the network...) and one just being a printer...

Print server? if not avoid at all costs

What..? We have a print server yes, but I don't get the question here.

Never mind. I misread it. Misfiring neurons

      @IRJ said in Salary:

Which leads me to another question, are IT pros at fault for low wages?

No. The dedication that is required to become good in this field is much higher than most jobs. The problem is that SMB's hire people (like me) who don't know the job to the level that they actually need to in order to do the job well. This happens for two major reasons:

      1. They don't want to pay a competitive salary to bring in talent.
      2. They don't test the knowledge of the people that they interview--or if they do it isn't well enough.

We have a flooded market of "IT people", the generic thing people outside of the field think we are, a lot of which can't do the job. How is an employer supposed to know whether a person can do the job or not? I definitely do not think I do my job well enough for what is required. It just so happens that I was completely honest in my interview and passed the test they gave me, so it really does fall on my employer at that point. I think you get what I'm trying to say though.

I think it's great that there is a discussion about the implications of backing/not backing up data, but I don't see why this conversation has to derail.

Any conversation that grows organically is not derailed. It's important aspects of the topic that were simply not envisioned as the ones that would be important to the conversation at the outset.

...and this is why I don't post here often. Every time I post anything or try to follow a topic here on ML, it devolves into an argument between usually you and someone else who doesn't agree with you. So now, this side convo is occurring which has very little to do with the original topic.

I don't mean offense to you or anyone else here, but I'm being totally honest here - this is exactly why I don't like interacting on ML.

I think that is the case sometimes. Not always though

It has been the case for nearly any topic I've been a part of.

I'm sorry you've had that experience. I'll try to post more on your topics šŸ˜„

@wirestyle22 I've applied for Jobs that say "certs required blah blah blah" but the certs don't make up for experience.

The certs are a sign you're willing to learn, not that you're an expert.

I'm not an expert. I'm a decently(?) qualified learner. I don't know if I will ever feel like I'm an expert honestly. I'm not really made that way.

I am trying to decide what made me want to switch to Firefox. The web browser stutters so bad, I can get to be a good paragraph a head of the text boxes here and on some other sites before the text even starts to display.

Everything seems to have a serious delay of a second or two or three when clicking or scrolling...

Just ranting right now... today I'm going to see if I can come up with a good solution.

I think your computer is broken... I don't have that problem.
How much RAM do you have? FF and Chrome both suffer from to much RAM requirements.

Turns out it is like an MS product... Gotta restart it every now and again. I checked the ram usage, and for 6 tabs over 2 windows, it was chewing up almost 2GB of ram. Shut it down and checked it again... same 6 tabs, only 500 megs of ram... much better.

      Memory leaks? šŸ˜ž

Every web browser I've tried eats ram like crazy. Try to tone down those auto-play video advertisements and the plugin takes even more memory. It's just terrible anymore.

Yeah I tried to explain this to my users the other day and they refused to believe that every browser out there has issues like this. It's tough to put it in a way they can understand šŸ˜ž
