Bathroom etiquetteposted in Water Closet
I have always operated under this unspoken rule--when we're in a public restroom we do not acknowledge each others existence. If there is an option you always leave one urinal between both of you. It's been 37 years of me operating under this ruleset. Today I got into the bathroom and I'm washing my hands before I use the restroom...because that makes sense (i will die on this hill) and my coworker I barely know walks in. He says "Hey Ian!" and walks up to me and touches my shoulder. I am basically thrown into chaos because this guy apparently operates on a complete opposing ruleset than me. I walk over to the urinal and he follows. There are five urinals that area empty and he stands directly next to me.
Am I mistaken in my understanding of social norms or is this really fucking weird

RE: Teamviewer hackedposted in News
Innocent until proven guilty I say. I'm all for burning the witch if we know shes a witch but the lack of facts is just as concerning to me as the potential hacking.
-So, logically--
- If she weighs the same as a duck...
- she's made of wood.
- And therefore?
- A witch!

Devices from eBay don't carry warranties, do they?
With xByte, you still get devices with warranties.
Depends on the seller. SaveMyServer does.
This might actually be a good solution for my in-home test environment. Hm.

So I've always wondered, why do so many people treat IT Staff (Technicians, Network/server admins and even directors) like crap? Is is because employees think these positions are below them or what?
Most people have trouble managing their expectations I find. There is also a disconnect with users where they think you caused their problem when in reality you are there to fix it.
And they expect the fix to be as simple as you waving your magic wand.
That too. I used to try to explain what the issue was and how I was going to resolve it but people with confidence issues end up getting even more angry so I stopped doing that.

Yea. If they ask me what the problem was, I'd explain it to them in tech-speak, and then follow up with an analogy that would help them understand without making them feel stupid.
Yeah it really depends on the person. You really have to use exactly the right analogy because I've had people try to optimize processes based on an analogy and I'm honestly dumbfounded when that happens. You don't have the body of knowledge to understand even the acronyms that we use daily, let alone the concepts attached to them--accept the situation.

@Ambarishrh It sounds like you want to see the sights etc. If you want to stop along the way as @dashrender said, then drive. If you want to make the trip easier for yourself take the train. There's apparently some pretty good food in Rochester which I'm looking forward to. You may not be a drinker as an individual but "we" as a collective are, so get ready

@gjacobse Form factor and how quiet the chassis is are large factors. One day I'll have a rack in my home but that day will not be soon.
Oh that's a conversation we can have. If you guys were making a network closet at home how would you cool it?
I would cool it ambiently and save money on my heating bills. Nothing says "I work in IT" like a server rack in your living room.
Or a 13U rack under your desk at home. Man, I gotta remember to check out Northeast Factory Direct, bet I could pickup one for cheap.
13U is almost the perfect height for an ottoman. Just saying.
I've been thinking of building one of these but my wife would kill me. At our next house I'm going to build a data closet.
Score 1 for bachelor life.
My wife works in IT. She's helped to cable the house before.
When I said I wanted to put a drop in every room, my wife said, "Isn't that what wireless is for?"
My fiance is totally open to anything I want to do technology wise which is great. She used to teach research methods at penn state and did empirical data analysis so she more than understands the concepts. It's great.

I've got a Motorola (why did they have to sell to Lenovo of all companies!) G4 Plus, the one with 4GB ram that nobody reviews. It's been so much better than even my Nexus 5 was.
True, while Lenovo still are making new phones with the brand like Motto M
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_m-8299.php
But still it is scary to buy from Lenovo, reviewers said that the Android OS looks and feels like stock like the usual but now we cant be sure, Lenovo have habit for injecting weird crap that you cant remove. For me I am liking and loyal to HUAWEI , I actually like their ROM, sure its not anything near Android stock, but I like the extras, I found them professional and helpful and non intrusive.
Had P8 Lite for 2 years and now NOVA Plus, and happy with the new phone. The only thing it is missing is WiFi ac and dual band but for me that is not an issue
I wasn't much of a Motorola fan before they sold to Lenovo. Even less of one now. They were great in the 1980s, but the late 1990s were not good to Motorola. I miss the M68000 days.
Toughest phone I ever owned was a little Motorola Startac flip phone.
My Nokia laughs in your general direction.
I think the actual model was the Nokia Brick

There was a lot of arm crossing day one, which I appreciated. @scottalanmiller and @JaredBusch did great presentations. I unfortunately was working while attempting to watch to i didn't get to see as much as I would've liked (I'm sure all of it was great), but overall it was a nice time. Seemed like everyone had fun. Hopefully will get to buy Scott Dash and some others drinks in person and meet everyone.

Also noticing Spectrum in my area is suddenly upgrading speeds to 200mb and even 400mb x 20mb for free! Just over the past week.
My dad got that UBNT Amplifi unit and the speedtest kept saying 200mb, so he thought it was wrong.
This all immediately following Net Neutrality bill? Whats the catch?
It's a Trojan horse right before they throttle all of your content. Either that or they think you're cute and are trying to butter you up.

Troubleshooting with user reporting black screen. Ask them if the cable is plugged in. They tell me the bios text isn't loading either.
User: Of course it's plugged in. I'm not an idiot!
Me: Okay Okay. no problem.
<situation doesn't make sense. might as well drive>
Arrive at site
Check DVI cable.
It's loose.
Everything working.
go to Dunkin Doughnuts for Coffee.
