@siringo well better to get it done then forget what you did in 6 months.
“Who the hell did this? That’s a terrible solution! It makes no sense… oh wait, that was me.”
Crap. I can't believe I did what. What was I thinking?! Was I thinking?! I'd better write it down this time.
Next Event: Repeat.
hahahahaha.
currently writing up a doc on how remote staff can reboot switches, diagnose led displays etc.
Lots of pictures, no tech words, just words like box, thing, light. This is where many IT people go wrong with doco for non tech people. They think the reader is interested, or wants to learn or should know about what is going on and what things are. Most people don't give a toss, they just want to get back to their work so they don't have to work back after hours to complete it.

Anything in the larger subnet can talk to the smaller subnet.
The smaller subnet cannot talk to the larger subnet beyond its boundary. Thanks @JaredBusch that ^^^ was all the info I was after. I really appreciate everyones help.

documentation and more documentation.
i used to like doing doco when I was younger, now not so much. -
RE: Changing subnet mask?
@stuartjordan The old SBS servers used to set up that way, way back in 2003/2008, you filled in a wizard and it built itself.
254 devices is more than enough.

Changing subnet mask?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but ...
Inherited an old SBS network which has been upgraded, but is still using the 10.0.0.0 /8 setup.
I was thinking of changing the subnet to /24.
Currently all devices still have 10.0.0.x addresses.
Some of the their network gear is managed and I need to arrange with them to change settings within their Cisco gear to /24.
If I get the Cisco gear changed, prior to me changing the servers, PCs, printers etc to /24 will everything remain working??
For example, If I get the Cisco gear changed to /24 on weekend 1, will everything still communicate & work fine until I can change the other gear on weekend 2??
I know the subnets are different, but with all devices having 10.0.0.x addresses I'm thinking they still may be seen by the /24 devices????
Does that make sense?

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@scottalanmiller looking at the Starlink web site, not alot of info.
Am I correct in thinking that you can have a simple self setup transceiver that is ground mounted?Does anyone know if that is portable to the degree where you could throw it in your car, and set it up out in the middle of nowhere?
-
RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Just googled Stalink and lo and behold, they reckon it's available where I'm at!
Available second half 2021 they say.
They're still rolling and sorting out our national broadband plan, Musky's gone and thrown some satellites up and it's already available in the southern hemisphere.
$AU139.00/month

RE: Windows Inventory Tool?
Thanks everyone for the help.
I'm looking at Lansweeper, it looks pretty good. Fully free for up to 100 assets, I may just slip in under that. -
RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
but the vaccines must be doing something. From where I sit, since the vaccines began rolling out in the US, the number of infections have dropped. In India, they're screaming out for Vaccines amongst other things, so I guess they think they're worthwhile.
I have people in their 80s who I care for, I don't want them dying before they have to, so if vaccines make their lives safer, then why not use them.
It's about protecting everyone, not just ourselves I believe.

RE: Windows Inventory Tool?
Mesh Central gives me the info I need. Is it possible to export that data somehow?

@notverypunny some more food for thought...
I'm not getting a vaccination for something that literally poses no real threat to me or 99.9% of the world.
Sure, I'll vaccinate against polio or smallpox for example because most people who get that would be fucked. No argument there. But for the flu or covid? Wtf?
Have you been able to see or read any info on what COVID can leave you with? It may not kill you but it can screw up your organs & shorten your life. Is your brain an organ? Anyway, it can also affect your brain function.
There's an after effect they call Long COVID in which people suffer many symptoms which linger for months after you've been cleared of COVID. This could keep you off work for as long as you have it.
The vaccine's don't stop you getting it, it just makes the symptoms less severe.
You mention you believe it poses no real threat to you. Have you contracted COVID yet? Have you contracted a bad bout of COVID yet? Until you do, you won't know if you're immune to it or not? It may kill you, you won't know until you see how your body can defend itself against it..
If the vaccine is free for you to get and you can get it, I don't understand why you'd put yourself at risk? You can rely on your ears to listen for traffic when you cross the road, but I bet you always look. The vaccine's the same, you can take the gamble and not get it, but why wouldn't you?
Not being confrontational here, just carrying on a discussion, that's all.
