RE: Career Change
Today I learned I did everything wrong. CIS Degree, started at minimum wage, don't make anywhere near doctor money, don't have a home lab, never post on here, and don't blog. I still work in IT, live in my hometown, make ok money, and have a good time with people I enjoy. Cheers and good luck man! Get out there and get your feet wet.

Losing weight. I'm starting to go back to the gym starting January 1st. Gradually moving up to 3 days a week and then, when I'm comfortable, I will try to complete P90X.
Never get comfortable, just dive in and go, you can do it.

New Years Resolutions v2.0
I gave up on meditation, but have been working more on slow thinking and focus, kept to working out and eating better and even slowed my alcohol consumption down. This year I'm keeping the same goals and working on taking them more seriously. Not just hitting the gym 2-3 days a week, but 3-5 days a week with a focused regimen. I dropped about 2% body fat, and I want to change another 2-3% more to muscle while maintaining weight. I want to read more books, I have gotten better, but I still went 2-3 months without turning a page in 2017. I want my old will power back that I had in college. I used to be disciplined enough to work 2 jobs and go to college full time, and it wasn't a big deal. I want that back and focus some extra time on side projects, fitness, and learning. Not my usual beer, social media, and TV. So on we go with 2018.
Who kept their old ones from last year? What new ones do you have for this year?

RE: Swap File location

They do it for performance reasons in systems where they screwed up other performance tuning like having enough RAM.
So if the system is built to a proper spec, then there is no reason to complicate the build? We have more than enough resources, but every system is built with 2-3 logical drives regardless.

Swap File location
In before I know better, this is not systems I control. We have a good old fashioned inverted pyramid of doom VMWare stack around. When ever I have the IT department build me a server they always create a separate virtual HD, and put the OS swap file on it, then another virtual drive for programs and data. It makes installing and managing software kind of a pain. I never do this on systems I build. Why do people do this, and should I be doing it? Am I missing something?

While it's true that 2400 sqft isn't huge, you didn't mention anything about the home construction. Your typical wood frame and drywall construction should not be a problem for the base unit that @JaredBusch suggested but if it's concrete block or steel frame, you may find you'll need to re-examine your options based on the coverage you get.
Good old wood and drywall circa late 1990's.

In your case, I would buy jsut the base unit I think. Then if coverage on the far side is poor, buy a single mesh antenna for $115.
Or if you think for sure you will need a mesh, then buy the kits because the spend is barely more than the base and a single mesh, and you will have awesomeness coverage.
But I think you could try just the base.
Well with the Base + 1 mesh is in the $260 price point. Is there a better base unit for <$260 that would be better than just the base by its self?

When I went from my ISP provided AP to a UBNT one, it was amazing how much better coverage it had.
@scottalanmiller might be right you might just need a better AP.
I kinda figured this could be an option, but I haven't used a newer one in a long time. My house is small, and the wifi router is near dead center in the home by my design. Is there an agreed upon AP/Router that is better than the rest?

Help fixing Home Wifi Signal Strength
I haven't had to mess with this technology in the home sector in a long time. My Mom's house is 2,400 square feet all 1 level. Her internet connection comes in in the farthest bedroom in the house. Because of course, they use wifi typically on the other end of the house. They currently are using a modem with a built in router, and it sucks, only getting about 10% throughput to the computers on the other end of the house. I am wanting to fix this for Christmas, but I wanted to get some feedback first. Would I be better off getting a decent AC router, with antenna pointing in every direction, or take advantage of something like Ubiquity or Google Wifi mesh and just setting up another AP in the middle of the house? Priorities are low cost, fool proof, no really fool proof, then performance.

Office Politics never resolves anything.
Fair, but if you can't prevent the delete, then it will happen. Then management will come to you and say "Where is my file?" You can then restore it from backups, and the next words out of their mouth will be "What happened?" It is nice to be able to say "on 11/30/17 at 1:15PM, Bill deleted it. I don't know why he did that."
-
RE: Prevent deleting files in shared folders
I also recommend turning on a file auditing policy. That way when someone deletes a file, you can identify the user then let office politics sort out the punishment.

OK. Because that was the answer I was looking for :SMH
seriously.... fuck crapple in their self righteous ass....
For as logical and well mannered as people here are, it is frustrating to even visit Mango and try to have a conversation as an Apple user.
Really? Scott loves the Apple.
Yeah, I know, he's part of the reason I switched. The overwhelming community view seems to be against it to the point of name calling.

Logical and well mannered apple users are the tiny minority.
As are educated and logical places on the internet to have conversations about technology... so let's keep this one.

It isn't the bug is doing a PW check against the disabled account, or is enabling this disabling the account for the check.

The quick fix is sudo pwd to change the root password to something non-blank. I assume apple with have a fix out quick.
