@scottalanmiller said in Help with IIS Security: Sorry that we could not narrow it down more. It is an obscure issue that is hard to troubleshoot with out seeing it. The application is probably the better fix, I just wanted a easier workaround and was hoping someone had seen it before.

@scottalanmiller said in What is in a Job Title?: @kelly said in What is in a Job Title?: Two, when you move to another job, how much will your current title help or hinder your job search as you attempt to move up in pay and responsibility? But remember, you need never use the title when looking for another job. It's rare, to the point of almost unheard of, for a company to ask you about your title from a previous job. Everyone knows that titles are made up and meaningless, so no one cares about what other people called you. They will ask you what you did, what your role was, and that needs to be honest. But they never ask about titles, it's just not a thing. In IT circles, IT pros often think that they need to tell people their titles regularly, but when really asked when this happens, the generally can't actually put their finger on it. It's one of those myths, everyone is sure that they must have needed to do that, and their friends must have done it... but when you start digging, no one has actually done it. They might see a "what was your role" question and think that they meant title, but that's not what is asked. You are legally allowed to give your title, but you can't legally claim it's anything more than a title unless it matches what you did. But are always legally allowed to tell your role, no matter what title was connected to it. Your right to disclose your role is guarantee under US employment law. Your title, if it is good, can be used if you like. If the title is bad, there is no reason to be encumbered by it. @s-hackleman This is the point that @scottalanmiller and I go around and around about. My sticking point with ignoring title and focusing on role is employment verification and work history. Most of the people doing the work of checking with prior employers are not the hiring mangers, but HR/recruiting/the boss's wife/etc. In short they're people that don't know, nor care what work you actually did. What they care about is that the title they were given for the job you had matches the one the previous employer has on file. If the two do not match, then it is a red flag.

I'm slowly getting used to it. Ewww. I hate sparkling water. Tastes like industrial ozone. It's not easy So why bother? Choice of plain water or soda, just do plain water. I also drink plain water but because I've been drinking soda for my entire life and I crave carbonation I'm probably the weirdo here, but even when I drank soda I preferred it flat. I hate carbonization unless it is really trivial. Instead of sparkling water, I'd prefer tonic water. I love quinine. Non carbonated or flat soda is just gross. At that point, it's just a disgusting flavoured juice. Carbonation is what makes it what it is. I find air in drinks odd. It's bitter and unpleasant and makes your stomach hurt. I thought you drink beer? Yes, preferably flat beer. There is a reason that I prefer real ale so much.

@s-hackleman said in Swap File location: @scottalanmiller said in Swap File location: They do it for performance reasons in systems where they screwed up other performance tuning like having enough RAM. So if the system is built to a proper spec, then there is no reason to complicate the build? We have more than enough resources, but every system is built with 2-3 logical drives regardless. Correct, we would rarely do this. That's just a mess if you don't need it to deal with another shortcoming.

@s-hackleman said in Fire fighting to project balance: @wirestyle22 Our stuff is more setup and config. For example, we want to manufacture a new widget. So many things have to be setup and configured before that process can start. We get contacted at the last second. Then we end up troubleshooting an emergency issue that could have been scheduled. I think SLA's may be the way to go, even if it is just 4 hours, it may prevent task switching as being moved off project work 3-5 times a day is pretty common. But like Wired mentioned, it's just as likely that your boss will get the call, and they will make you starting working on it ASAP. This really needs to come from your boss, and your boss needs to be willing to go to bat for the situation, and his higher ups need to agree this as well. If any one in the chain breaks down, well the rest is pretty much for not.

@coliver said in Cultured foods: @NDC said in Cultured foods: @coliver Try using a blow-off set up instead of the little airlocks. Makes life much better if you end up with a bit of a run away fermentation. See example here Oh! That's a really good idea never thought of that. My wife put a stop to it after two years in a row where we cleaned half fermented mash off the basement ceiling. Got to watch temps and don't over-fill Those two things will keep you out of a lot of trouble that a blow off tube wont. Get some of these too, super handy. You can get them in packs of 10 on amazon for something like a dollar. http://www.mrbeer.com/stick-on-thermometer

I've had to super glue my band on for the second time in a year. If you email them and ask they will send you a brand new one. They did for my wife twice now. Mine is already out of warranty. I did have them do that the first time. The second band was better -- it lasted almost a full year... If you are telling me they'll still ship me another one, then dang, I need to go to their site and see! It is worth sending them an email and asking. I can't remember if hers was a year old or not, but I know she got the same one replaced twice. Sad that is required but glad they replaced it for her

@s.hackleman said in How old is too old to start down this path: @thwr said in How old is too old to start down this path: Programming is different. You need a high level of abstract thinking and - at least that's my opinion - you must be creative. @scottalanmiller said something very true, programming is like paining or playing an instrument. There is some, hell, how to say... There's a hidden picture deep behind tens or hundreds of thousands of lines, something you can actually feel at times. Sounds stupid, I know IT in terms of administration, deployment and similar tasks is also a big thing, where analyitical and problem solving skills are required, but it's not like (real) programming. Remember: Programming != ("Coding" || Webdesign || Printers) Scott Hanselman had a podcast a few weeks ago about code smells. I think that is the feel you are referring too. YEs, that is it. Standard term "smells" believe it or not.

@guyinpv said in Replacing Evernote?: @scottalanmiller said in Replacing Evernote?: @guyinpv we use one OneNote per client. That way the data is portable per client. If a client wants a copy, they can have it. If a client leaves, we can archive their documents. That's a lot of notebooks! I figured my Rolodex-style tab system would work much the same once I can share the tabs, the client can get into the tab and all the pages within. But I can see the benefit of one notebook per client. Just need an easy way to navigate them. The way ON lets me browse notebooks is annoying. Doesn't lend itself well to having dozens or even hundreds of notebooks. Yup, but it makes it much easier to have different security per client. It's all in Sharepoint, so very easy to manage.

@s.hackleman said in Best Practices: Could I make a DNS alias called HistoryServer Then point it to both History1? Then point all apps to HistoryServer. When ever an upgrade comes due, I can just update the DNS alias in one place? Yes, but if you can do that, you could just rename, too. This is the better way to go, and ideally should be done from the start.
