    • RE: Travel and accommodation expenses

It's really about making people pay for what things cost. That same person not traveling is still $1500/day but they get to go home at night and see their family.

When traveling they spend a lot of non-billable time shuffling around. Making them pay extra to get to do it makes it worse still.

The advantage of time + expenses is that the expenses vary based on the customer's location decisions. If you are in London they will be high. If you are Detroit they are low.

Could be fragmentation. How full is the drive?

Definitely image now. Get to a recoverable state before looking at anything else.

Isn't throttling to keep the system from burning up a good thing?

I've been seeing issues that the chat system really isn't working now.

I would want to move my DNS records at night or some other time when no one else is working. And you'll need to prep everyone that email is going down.

    • RE: Those supporting Windows 8.1 - do you disable Windows defender? and update issues

Yes, disable Windows Defender if you are using another AV. In the 8 / 8.1 products, Defender is a full AV so you can either just use it or disable it if using a third party product.

Overall it seemed like a good day today. And a lot of people were busy posting too, it was not a slow day.

Sonic wall is something I'd stay away from. Ubiquiti has good stuff. Cisco does as well, but IMO cisco is becoming less and less attractive in the market as others come up with better priced/feature units than cisco offers.

I have to agree with this. Cisco has really lost their edge.

pfSense is pretty good. Much better than many expensive options.

I would check backups right away before doing anything else. The replacement drives will take time and if there is only one drive in there now.... what are you going to do? You can't just add a second drive to a running server. You will need to rebuild the server to get to any RAID level. So a good, tested, backup will be needed before being able to leverage those new drives anyway.

    • RE: Looking to move how to find best places to move (both career wise, and living)

Overall, though, SC is not a hot market for IT jobs. NC is a little better. Georgia is a little better.

Anderson, SC is really nice. Check in with Anderson Area Medical Center. Very progressive hospital that has internal IT and is located in a great area. SC but close to Atlanta. Very good combination of factors.

Speedtest.net generally does a pretty good job reporting on your line. Nothing can ever be the whole story, networking is too complex for that. But it gives a good, useful picture.

    • RE: SonicWall devices

Sonicwalls are not really generally considered to be great, just well marketed. Lower end devices popular with people looking to bundle them with server sales. They sell based on the name. Not considered bad, but not considered good.

    • RE: HP Stream 14 - Microsoft's Chromebook Competition

Pretty basic but about on par with many Chromebooks. Microsoft has been vowing to fight the Chromebooks hard. This appears to be the beginning of a major attack on them. Will be interesting to see how this works out for them. Maybe this is the beginning of Windows being free.

Have you made sure that backups are being taken, are working and that restores are possible?
