Will I actually see the linux server in my windows AD when its working?

Yes, Windows can't tell it isn't a Windows machine. It's a AD server, just like any other.

More accurately, it's an LDAP server.

Despite what people think, Microsoft kept up with proper standards for AD (the overarching product line). Active Directory encompasses a large scope of product lines, certificates, device integration, DNS, DHCP, etc. etc. etc. But at it's core, it's just an LDAP server. Not a super scalable one, but one none the less.

What you get with Samba as a controller is an LDAP database. Given AD's ubiquity in the authentication scape, it's a good choice to use as it supports a broad base of OSes with little modification. You can't say the same thing about things like Netware's old eDirectory or straight OpenLDAP.

I just bought an HP Proliant ML10. Only 239 bucks on Newegg. Had to spend another $180 for some ECC RAM, but meh. My previous test box was my old AMD quad core machine. Although I could stack it with RAM cheaper, I forget how good it is to have a decent actual server in the house. Using out of band tools made things a lot easier to setup, iLO/DRAC is a necessary thing. 🙂

I used to use a bunch of servers. I got tired of the noise. Granted once I finish up these video contracts I could move my HP z8020 that has 24 cores, 192GB of ram to make a very slient ESXi host. Expect the free version is only licensed for one CPU.

      $200. Quit yer bitchin'!

Double NAT? is everyone here running two routers in series behind their ISP's connection?

Not me. Never done that. I hate double nat.

Thing is, lots of folks don't know or cannot configure stuff.

When I was at the big blue Borg, had lots of folks who would double NAT a device behind a 2wire. Caused all kinds of weird shit when attempting to browse to Yahoo's mail site. Current U-Verse equipment unless properly configured will wind up with a double NAT scenario. Even configured differently will only be pseudo-public. Same thing happens at the big red V on their equipment.

Comcast has delivered lots of "routers" to folks so we wind up with lots of double NAT. And those devices are much harder to modify to bridge mode. Same thing with Time Warner, Cox, and Charter.

Sometimes its unavoidable. But it does fun things when you try it. Hence why every ISP will tell you to remove any third party equipment from their stuff to troubleshoot. Its not just because they are from a certain subcontinent and reading from a script. Clearing cache and cookies, yeah, that's in the script. 🙂

    • RE: Can't download Windows Updates or visit Microsoft.com

Microsoft's website hasn't been pingable for at least 20 years. So your ping is pretty much expected. It's hitting the MSN backbone, it's fine.

Doesn't look like you are doing double NAT, but that could be it. MS does like to use HTTPS and double NAT can do some fun things there. Remove any third party routers behind Comcast's junk.

Other than that, try another connection. Grab your phone and make it into a hot spot. If it doesn't work then, you know it's your machine itself. If it works, then something on your local network. I doubt that it's anything to do with Comcast, that big of an issue would hit up lots of news sites.

Considering whom I've worked for in the past and whom I work for now, yeah, I do lots of datacenter work. 🙂

Big red V uses a combination of various tools from HP and homebrewed connection stuff. Remember that the big red V had been in this business in one way or another for over 15 years.

New place, don't know yet because haven't been here long enough.

That doesn't explain how a VPN fixes the performance issues, though. That suggests that a VPN could not fix it. If a VPN fixes it it sounds like either there is alternate route or it is really being throttled.

Peers are not equal from place to place. My OC-192 might be saturated but someone else's OC-3 is pretty wide open. Netflix would have a giant pipe because they would allow in everything and load balanced to other pipes. A very normal thing.

It is routing, and it is not routing. Its a complex issue that net neutrality doesn't necessarily fix. It's just inherent in the nature of the backbone traffic management.

Net neutrality doesn't fix it at that level or that point along the chain.. but it does fix it at the likes of comcast's network, or any other ISP that's throttling it.

Which a lot of the Netflix hubbub was not actually about. Comcast actually was putting traffic shaping into their pipes. Like 15 years ago. But people have rioted and screamed about that for years. Deep packet inspection is a pipe dream at the moment for ISPs bigger than your typical rural WISP. The amount of hardware and software required for it would be immense. And just doing per route shenanigans doesn't help when you have a CDN that can change the destinations on a whim.

      It's a super complicated issue.

Back to the thread, I have noticed that AT&T definitely throttles my connection. I get a better speed when using VPN. AT&T slows certain things down like Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and other high traffic sources. Videos play 10 times better when I use anonymous VPN even though my connection is technically slower.

      It's not throttled, it's a peering issue.

Net neutrality rules do not fix this.

If they get better speeds through a different peer, isn't it a routing issue?

There's only one route to Netflix though. And considering they peer with Level3, which tons of traffic goes through as well, it will cause a bottleneck to them.

Netflix et. al. are doing the best they can to get things over to their CDNs, which will ease congestion on that link. They also are working with ISPs on getting a peer box inside of the network to send that traffic towards instead. These things have been done in the ISP scape since the earliest days of the internet. My old ISP had upstream links with InterNAP, which would pump out super clean traffic across pipes to various game servers. When your ping is super low, as in sub 10ms to the game server, it was great.

From the standpoint of the law, I an not a tenant.

Are you over 18, have any kind of agreement about living there and have been there over 30 days? Then you are a tenant, even if you don't pay a single dime.

Tenancy laws are very specific, especially in New York.

    • RE: Starting to Plan our Sept Trip

I only drive down because flying out of Dallas to Austin is kind of pointless. Although the MEGABUS! will take you straight there as well, and there is luxury options for bus service between DFW/HOU/AUS leaving almost every hour on the hour. Trip is fast down the highways here in Texas. But ol' Black Betty does the drive well, so I take her instead.

Reminds me of this recruiter who was hitting me up for a job in Austin. Would love to move there, but had to mention to her that Dallas and Austin are almost four hours apart. Folks don't understand sometimes how big Texas is.

You could always call AT&T and ask them why there connection doesn't work well when you illegally download torrents.

You laugh, but I've actually had this call once. Dumb shit kid was complaining that his downloads were slow. Went through our favorite subcontinent for not understanding shit and got to me at level 3 because I was taking calls as a level 2 guy. The first question I asked was "Where are you downloading from?" "BitTorrent" was his reply. After properly chastising the T1 agent for his inability to ask even the most basic of questions, I promptly educated the customer on the inconsistent nature of distributed downloads.

Explains a lot, to be honest.
