@scottalanmiller Yeah, I understand, things like RAID, Snapshots within the HDD etc. are not real backups. They are just for redundancy (RAID), performance (RAID), limited restore (snapshots).

@DustinB3403 Thanks. I think, now I understand 3-2-1 backup better. Earlier I was assuming 3 backups were excluded with Original Data (say file server data), but I was wrong.

Hi all,

We are maintaining on-site backups for our File Server on QNAP TS453 Pro.

Now we want to setup Off-site backup by using another QNAP TS453A NAS box on Remote Location.

So what's the best practise to get it done by NAS to NAS.

Also, after googling I found we can use QNAP Remote Replication, but I just wonder if it's a real backup, as it is just a copy of on-site NAS Box, what if On-site NAS data got infected with virus or currupted, so same thing gets copied to off-site NAS, so no working backup at On-site and Off-site, so failed strategy.

So, do I need to purchase some other backup software to backup the data to Off-site separtely ? for on-site, yes we are using EaseUs server backup software.

I am trying to understand 3-2-1 backup rule, son/father/gf model backups etc. to make a better Backup strategy in our company.

Want to understand better about 3-2-1 rule and son/father/grandfather model or daily/weekly/monthly/yearly etc. backups

3-2-1 Backup :

3 - Three Copies of Data --> One Origina Data (lets say File Server Data) and two other copies.

2 - Different Types of Storage Media --> Any of two from DVD, Hard Drive, Cloud, NAS etc.

1 - Offsite [ keeping one copy of data out of three to offsite location].

Son/Father/Grandfather Backup model:

I am not clear about Son/Father/Grandfather backup model. My guess is:

1. Son --> On-site Backup (lets say 30 days backup)
2. Father --> Offsite Backup of On-site Backup (lets say 12 backups - 1 year)
3. Grandfather --> Backup of Offsite backup (for permanent/archive backup)

Also, I just wonder if the offsite backup will be backup of Onsite backup or directly making another backup from original source to offsite.

Please assist me in understanding above points and any others points which are important for backup things.

Also, I didn't find any Mobile App for XS7 alike "Watchlist" for VMWare, I will assume, there is no such app.

Also, there was an Mobile App from VMWare "Watchlist" to monitor and manage VMWare ESXi6 Host, is there something like that available for XS7 ?

I have tried to create Storage Repository locally on XS7 but it's asking for SMB/NFS/CIFS details to setup. I do not have other resource (file server) to configure and trying to configure with local storage to upload ISO files, isn't it possible ?

How about creating Datastore in XS7 to upload images (ISO) to create new VMs ?

I want to have some space on XS7 itself, to upload ISO images or other files via XenCenter or Shared folder which should be visible to XS7 (to use ISO files while creating VMs).

How about license ? Do I need to register and get license key from Xenserver.org ?

I was not talking about space on XS server.

Import and Export:
ESXi VM Export to --> My Computer
My Computer --> Import to XenCenter

Here in my case, I need to consider about space on My Computer, as I shown in pic, XenCenter is making duplicate copy before importing.....

Make sure you have double space than VM at export target, as I have observed that while importing the OVA from XenCenter, it is creating a copy on source (ova) location and then copying to XS7 SR.

Here, Hyperv vm was a test VM I was running on ESXi and because it's smaller size, I have chosen this one to test import and export.

@Dashrender Done with migrating one VM (hyperv VM) and was sucessful. Tested on XenServer 7 by running it.

Few things we need to consider :

• Export and Import is taking long (depends on vm size)
• I am importing VM from ESXi to my computer and Exporting (OVA) from my computer to XenServer 7.
• I have configured vSphere client for ESXi and XenCenter for XS7 which makes my work bit easier (feels working locally-within my computer).
• Make sure you are connected with cable (for performance).

Imported successfully and running
