      New info:

Some of our connection attempts have been run direct from my office to a server in the RD farm rather than through their standard method, sessions still exhibit slow behavior.

Neglected to bring my laptop when visiting that office earlier today. All of the staff there are on thin clients so any pings would have been inside the NY network.

Probably there is access to diagnostic tools on these devices but I didn't have time to find them. Need to poke at the manual.

Can you get actual latency numbers, both for Denver and some sites that are working well?

Don't have numbers from other offices that are working will ask. From my desk, sub 50ms but this is a different Denver location(we are also slow when connecting to the RD server).

Probably able to get numbers from at least the actual problem site again a bit later today.

Need to find out about any fine-tuning that may have been done to the RDS servers. These settings may work well for the other sites, but not the Denver site.

Not sure about this bit, will see what I can do. I think there is a load balancer involved as well which I could see being part of the issue.

    • Slow RDS sessions

Not sure we have enough info/access yet to get to an answer but worth a try anyhow!

The company I work for has been bought recently and we are dealing with an infrastructure we aren't super familiar with just yet but have been tasked to help with the issue.

Branch offices access virtual desktop sessions hosted on a server at the HQ(NY).

One branch in our area (Denver) is having performance issues with their remote sessions. Performance is reportedly fine at the rest of the offices. We are by some margin the furthest away so I sort of suspect some kind of latency issue.

Everything in the remote session is laggy at this location. For example load a webpage with a photo slider at the top and each change ends up being drawn line by line.

There is a site to site VPN between the locations provided by SonicWALL devices.

Pings to edge devices and the server being accessed have so far seemed decent to good.

Have checked traffic on the internet connection and so far it doesn't look like they are over running the connection capability.

Also ran an RD session to a host in AWS West region which worked without trouble from the same location, internet, piece of hardware. Not sure this tells us a whole lot though since there is still a lot changed from one situation to the other.

What other steps can we take to find the issue and stamp it out?

A trip to the gym for stabbey, stick swinging, punchey fun is always good for a little tension drop.

Also getting on a bike. My commute is therapy since I get out the office door and roll home on the multi-use path.

@jmoore There are some quests in that game that make me wonder if i am a decent person or not because of my choices.
"did I really just help this person who is a drunk, wife beating murderer? For 200 gold? Yes I did."
"That person I just saved turned into a werewolf and butchered an entire village!"

oh my, guess there will be some interesting times to come

There really are. That game has much more interesting moral dilemmas than pretty much any other and outcomes will not always match expectations. Great stuff.

Probably going to binge the new season of Stranger Things this weekend.

We were thinking the same thing.

I want to do this, but watched the first season while the SO was out of town. Think she wants to give it a go so I may be watching season one again soon rather then jumping into 2 right away.

Stand on Zanzibar by John Brunner

I've had a few false starts with this one. Finally made myself read past the first few pages and it has drawn me in.

Nearing the end and I am feeling like it deserves the Hugo it won in 1969 and its status as a classic of SF.

https://www.tor.com/2011/02/06/hugo-nominees-1969/ is a pretty good write up of what was nominated elsewhere and what might have been overlooked altogether. Looks like that was quite the year for SF.

Samuel R. Delany's Nova which got a nomination is definitely going on my to read list.

Also of note: Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea was eligible that year but somehow didn't make the cut for any of the awards. This one is a personal favorite and it's a bit disappointing to see it got snubbed. It gets classified as YA but is absolutely worth a read for people of any age. Definitely recommend sharing with the kiddos for those of you with fantasy inclined spawn.

5x5 is an excellent program. I was extremely happy with my progression when I was using that program and a bit later a derivative of it.

I really need to get back to picking up heavy objects and putting them back down again.

      @dave247 said in VLAN confusion:

Yeah, I agree with this. This is all I've really wanted to express. Nobody is maliciously corrupt here, but not everyone is the best at their jobs here either.

Not an option. Either your CIO is competent and corrupt, or incompetent and would welcome your exposure of the problem.

So which is it... are you comfortable telling the CIO and CEO about the situation because they honestly want to do what is right, or do you have ANY fear that they will punish you to silence the exposure of what they plan to do?

You can't have it both ways.

Fear of reprisal does not inherently mean that the other party is corrupt. It is a symptom of the fact that you can never be fully certain of the other party's motives since you don't live in their head.

It is possible that there is evidence available that would point in one direction or the other though.

Kiling outlook access to Exchange Online is just stupid.

Kill the rest of it sure. But Outlook?

I have a client with Exchange 2010 that we are planning to migrate to O365 Exchange Online Plan 1 next year. Now I will not do it. I will look into other solutions.

There is no package to let users use Outlook locally in this new scenario if you only have Exhange Online Plan 1

How are they getting Outlook licensing? Do they have stand alone perpetual licenses that they would continue to use?

This entire season was so sloppy. If I weren't so invested I'd stop watching.

It's now a show with books written about it, rather than a show from books. That might be a big factor.

So they have an insane amount of references they can use instead of having to create the entire show from scratch? George R. R. Martin even gave them every major plot point. Wouldn't that make their job that much easier?

Who is "they" here? GRRM writes the show.

According to IMDB he's written 4 episodes and those were in early seasons.

Tinkering a bit with FreePBX at home and I saw there is an option for using SMS service with it. Documentation suggests that this only works with SIPStation and I was not especially looking to sign up with them.

Does anyone know if that function is really locked down to the one SIP provider? I saw that VoIP.ms has some support for SMS but wasn't able to find anything about whether that would work within FreePBX or not. All signs kind of point to this being a no go at the moment.

There is nothing locked down to a specific thing with Asterisk. Asterisk is completely FOSS.

FreePBX modules may or may not be FOSS as you see.

There have been SMS modules and scripts created over the years for Asterisk systems. I would have to dig into them to find something though. It has not been anything a client has requested recently.

SIPStation pricing is not the best, but if SMS is really needed, it is not all that expensive.

Thanks, I was not thinking about that in the right frame of reference.

I'll likely have a go at this and see what I can make happen.
