nadnerB's CloudatCost Project Journal
My project, so far is to set up, configure and secure CentOS 7 (minimal install) with very little Linux experience.
It might be a little ambitious but I can read and follow instructions.
Β
I'm doing this all by command line as that's the only way given the fact that I am using the minimal install
So far I've:- changed the root password
- Created a new user and set a password
Now for a firewall and that Fail2Ban thing.
Β
EDIT: oops, better update it before I do anything else (not sure where I read the below code but it was somewhere on ML)yum -y update

RE: Huzzah for Me!

Normally in the US L1 is the pyramid base and L3 is the top before hitting SMEs.
L0 is becoming common for "sub IT" tasks.
Good stuff.
Remember @ajstringham they don't care how good you are at Level 1.
I know this isn't your first picnic but I have observed a tendency to get a little heated seemingly unnecessarily. I know I don't know the full back story but neither will a prospective client or employer should they come across the posts.
Not being nasty or rude, just an observation.
This is why I use an alias instead of my real name. Just in case I come across that one person that pushed the big red button and I can no longer cage the rage.
That being said, it doesn't work for everyone, Scott is a prime example for reasons already mentioned.TL;DR
Be careful with what you post as it's easy to drag your own name through the mud.Best of luck though

Windows 10 Versions announced
There are 7 new versions of Windows. Hooray! But why couldn't they just round it out with another three versions to have 10 versions of 10?
Imagine the marketing they could have had! Windows it's 10/10.
Now they are languishing at 7/10.Anyway, here is the educational link:
http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/05/13/introducing-windows-10-editions/Windows 10 Home is the consumer-focused desktop edition. It offers a familiar and personal experience for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1s. Windows 10 Home will help people do great things, both big and small. With it, they will be more productive and have more fun thanks to a long list of new innovations: Cortana, the worldβs most personal digital assistant; the new Microsoft Edge web browser; Continuum tablet mode for touch-capable devices; Windows Hello face-recognition, iris and fingerprint login; and right out of the box, a broad range of universal Windows apps like Photos, Maps, Mail, Calendar, Music and Video*.
We are also bringing the Xbox gaming experience to Windows 10, giving games and gamers access to the Xbox Live gaming community, enabling the capture and share of gameplay and giving Xbox One owners the ability to play their Xbox One games from any Windows 10 PC in their home.
Windows 10 Mobile is designed to deliver the best user experience on smaller, mobile, touch-centric devices like smartphones and small tablets. It boasts the same, new universal Windows apps that are included in Windows 10 Home, as well as the new touch-optimized version of Office. Windows 10 Mobile offers great productivity, security and management capabilities for customers who use their personal devices at work. In addition, Windows 10 Mobile will enable some new devices to take advantage of Continuum for phone, so people can use their phone like a PC when connected to a larger screen.
Windows 10 Pro is a desktop edition for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1s. Building upon both the familiar and innovative features of Windows 10 Home, it has many extra features to meet the diverse needs of small businesses. Windows 10 Pro helps to effectively and efficiently manage their devices and apps, protect their sensitive business data, support remote and mobile productivity scenarios and take advantage of cloud technologies. Windows 10 Pro devices are a great choice for organizations supporting Choose Your Own Device (CYOD) programs and prosumer customers. Windows 10 Pro also lets customers take advantage of the new Windows Update for Business, which will reduce management costs, provide controls over update deployment, offer quicker access to security updates and provide access to the latest innovation from Microsoft on an ongoing basis.
Windows 10 Enterprise builds on Windows 10 Pro, adding advanced features designed to meet the demands of medium and large sized organizations. It provides advanced capabilities to help protect against the ever-growing range of modern security threats targeted at devices, identities, applications and sensitive company information. Windows 10 Enterprise also supports the broadest range of options for operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management. It will be available to our Volume Licensing customers, so they can take advantage of the latest innovation and security updates on an ongoing basis. At the same time, they will be able to choose the pace at which they adopt new technology, including the option to use the new Windows Update for Business. With Windows 10, Enterprise customers will also have access to the Long Term Servicing Branch as a deployment option for their mission critical devices and environments. And as with prior versions of Windows, Active Software Assurance customers in Volume Licensing can upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise as part of their existing Software Assurance benefits.
Windows 10 Education builds on Windows 10 Enterprise, and is designed to meet the needs of schools β staff, administrators, teachers and students. This edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing, and there will be paths for schools and students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to upgrade to Windows 10 Education.
Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise is designed to deliver the best customer experience to business customers on smartphones and small tablets. It will be available to our Volume Licensing customers. It offers the great productivity, security and mobile device management capabilities that Windows 10 Mobile provides, and adds flexible ways for businesses to manage updates. In addition, Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise will incorporate the latest security and innovation features as soon as they are available.

So, we got a SAN sales call today
So, we (my boss) got a SAN sales call today. I'd just like to put it out there that I objected loud enough for senior cupcake to hear.
Out of frustration at the fact that SANny-poopy-pants salesman was calling, I did some Google-ing of SAN Failure and I came across some of @scottalanmiller's posts.
There was a moment where I giggled at the mention on "the inverted pyramid of doom" [Reference Link]. It reminded me of a scene from the minion movie regarding a similar pyramid of doom. I shall be using this as an explanation tool from now on B)
Enjoy... and you're welcome:

Thread derailment can be a good thing as it can get to the underlying issue that the OP has yet to discover (excluding my above post ).

RE: new begineer lT
Slow down, mate. Don't get too far ahead of yourself.
Have a go at the VirtualBox setup and try out some stuff on Linux BEFORE you make a massive financial commitment. -
RE: Cortana Being Moved from Taskbar to System Tray
Let's face it. Microsoft have no idea what they are doing or where they are going with Windows.
STOP MOVING STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!
If they just left things in one place and let people get used to it, the complaints would settle. Shifting stuff and making all these changes doesn't help. People typically hate change, so continuously changing the interface is a bad move. We've already had at least two start menus! -

Can I quote that in the IT quotes I like thread?

Change your Twitter password
https://www.itnews.com.au/news/twitter-urges-password-reset-for-all-users-490269
Twitter is urging its more than 330 million users to change their passwords after a bug caused some of them to be stored in plain text in an internal log.
Β
The social network said it had fixed the bug and that an internal investigation had found no indication passwords were stolen or misused by insiders.
Β
However, it urged all users to "consider" changing their passwords "out of an abundance of caution."Also:
