I'm presently flying the ship solo, coworker on vacation. Got my coffee in my left hand, vape in my right. I'd say I wasn't especially concerned about this as I can deal with most anything that comes up however I know that Murphy's law never sleeps.

    • I feel bad for a computer, here is it's story

Dell Optiplex 3020, generic desktop, nothing special.

User booted it up, USB wouldn't respond. Tried a few different devices, unplugged all but keyboard, just nothing would work. Meh, no big deal, shut it off and took it back to the bench for a quick troubleshoot before calling Dell.

At the bench, it worked flawlessly.

Ok fine, bad peripheral or something stupid, went back to see the user working away just fine on the loaner desktop, the same peripherals, no problems.

Wanting to be careful because this is an odd one (and I really hate having to revisit an issue), I checked the event logs. I see it's been going to sleep and waking back up every 2-6 minutes for more than 12 hours solid.

This poor thing was going to sleep mode then being woken (mouse vibrating?) for probably days like this. The event log was so long that I didn't want to waste more time scrolling through it.

Seems fine now but holy smokes I've never felt so bad for a computer before.

My guess is that they were not expecting actual IT people to try to jump in and were afraid that real IT knowing what was going on would risk big time exposure.

If that's the case, why didn't they hire me 😉

I agree, it's just a really short sighted (stupid) move they did to block certain names. Racism implies intent.

Well, my first interview is Tuesday, even before my final pay check is due 🙂

      Congrats. Doing what?

Branch IT support for a Fortune 500 company in Columbus, OH. Lots of opportunity for promotion from within the company. Also, the same company my brother-in-law works for, so it was easy to get my name in front of the proper people instead of having to get past HR first.

Knowing people helps... My first ever IT job I got of my own recognizance, turns out I was friends with the guy's kid, ha ha ha.

I'm too much of a homebody to ever know anyone. All of my friends are all over the country now

So next time you job hunt... look where your friends live! 😄

      Indeed

I've yet to get a job in IT that was not through my contacts

Received the exablox oneblox units and they're setup in the "ring" now. Still highly dubious of any product that I can't find a single bad review or issue with. Time will tell and the abuse of these two will begin soon.
