@scottalanmiller said in Never get between a man and his tax credits:

@dafyre Don't tempt me haha. I did claim my big move 5 years ago, that was a sweet sweet tax year.

Under the new tax code in the US, only military can claim relocation deductions.

Unless you.... "relocate out of the US"

US citizens are still on the hook for US Income tax. You can deduct foreign income tax (unlike SLAT that was capped). The issue is once it saves you enough locally your tax credit will drop below the US taxes and you'll just have to pay them (So this only helps if you are still net/net higher income tax locally).

Even worse, basic tax advantaged accounts that may exist somewhere like Canada may now trigger foreign grantor trust reporting as the US doesn't recognize them.

@coliver anyone published an eta on that? I don't have to make a move on this for a year

Then why even talk about it now? Tech moves so fast who knows what could change?

That's not true. Infrastructure hardware is years in development.

I have a few crypto rigs that I could use some of these for 🙂

How long does it take you to pay for the difference of drive with voltage savings. I think that is a myth especially considering how unprofitable mining has become.

If you're worried about the cost of electricity in your mining rig, you need to quit or upgrade it.

      From Stephanie Leo!

I am writing you this message with tears and sorrow and I know this mail may come to you as a surprise, I am Stephanie Leo. The only daughter. My father was a very wealthy cocoa merchant in Abidjan Ivory Coast (Cote Ivoire) my father was poisoned to death by his business associates on one of their outings on a business trip.

My mother died when I was a baby and since then my father took me so special. Before the death of my father in a private hospital here in Abidjan he secretly called me on his bed side and told me that he has the sum of (7,500000.00) seven million five Hundred thousand US Dorella, left in fixed / suspense account in one of the international bank here in Abidjan, he used my name as his only daughter for the next of Kin in depositing of the fund. My late father instructed me to seek for a foreign partner in a country of my choice where I will transfer this money and use it for investment purpose such as real estate management or hotel management.

I am honorably seeking for your assistance in the following ways:(1) To provide a bank account in which this money would be transferred to .(2) To serve as my guardian.(3) To make arrangement for me to come over to your country to further my education.

Note: I am willing to offer you 20% of the total sum as compensation for your effort/ input after the successful transfer of this fund to your nominated bank account. Anticipating hearing from you soon.please contact me through my private email (stephanieloe201@-removed-)

These things really make me wish for a way to have a fake bank account that could track these schemes.

No make problems good Sir! Kindly send your five Hundred thousand US Dorella, me take care of best goodly!

Yes, those errors will concern me a lot. Usually I have seen this error on Synology with failing hardware parts as replacing the drive sometimes do not fix the issue nor a firmware update. Contact Synology support to have them check the device.

@coliver said in Android/iOS Antivirus Questions:

I'm not convinced it's necessary. Both iOS and Android have sandboxing features that prevent malicious code from running. Android, of course, lets the user run it anyway if they give that app permission. I think iOS has something similar but they have a pretty decent app store that prevents that type of thing, unlike Google.

I am an Android guy by the way.

I'm not convinced it's necessary either, but I believe I was infected and now I'm all paranoid.

One security research firm (I don't remember the name I'll have to look) went through the Google App store and downloaded as much malicious stuff as possible. They found that unless the application is given permission, which means a user has to allow it, then it really can't do anything on the system. If the user allows it then, obviously, the malicious code was able to execute and do it's thing.

That's exactly what creeps me out about Android - why does everything need permissions to stuff you wouldn't expect it to use. I fear the answer is "to slurp your data". Which is garbage. However the app won't run without it.

Example: "Samsung Briefing" which is a news aggregator - asks for permission to save to disk, phone, etc etc

The newest version of Android took a cue from iOS and now lets you be more judicial with app permissions. Haven't been able to play with it yet.

in what way? I don't see a way to prevent, for example, Skype from using my camera but allowing it access to the network and microphone.

Do you have Nougat? I could have sworn that was one of the selling points. Where you give permissions like that on an as needed basis. So you could very well prevent skype from accessing the camera but allow it to access the microphone. It may not work as expected but...

You could also look at PlayOnLinux or Crossover.

PlayOnLinux works well for some games, but not for others. I haven't used Crossover in a long time, so I can't speak to how well that one works.

You have had a weird anti Apple vibe going the last couple days..

FTFY. They do have some good products, but they are way overpriced. More like a status symbol, if you know what I mean.

I second that. No reason to buy an overpriced item just because that's what the "cool kids" like.

In the last 2 years i have drank the Kool-aid. I don't fan girl, it is nice just being able to buy a technology, and it just works.

Compared to Win/Linux I have to give Apple credit for that

Yup, I'm the farthest thing from an Apple fan and I hate the OSX machines, but the iOS phones and tablets are so solid.

I've built one once... It was a Firewall / Router using straight up Linux, Shorewall, and ClamAV for a 10 meg connection. Our main firewall just went kaput, and the company was not responding to phone calls for support (it's a long story).

Set up Linux on a system with 8 NICs and went to town.

      Edit:

It's not hard to build one if you understand the concepts of routing and such... Not for the faint of heart if you have to make one work well enough to be used in production.

I never quite gleaned from the article whether it was you could only pass 1 VM per GPU, or if you could do GPU sharing and let multiple VMs use the same GPU?

I haven't read the entire thing, so I may be mistaken. They were talking about two different modes of GPU pass through. One mode where you have 1GPU to 1VM, and another one where you can share 1GPU with many VM.

@scottalanmiller I'm going to investigate the blocking stuff this afternoon and make sure it's all in place.

It's easy to say it's not really our responsibility but I enjoy working here and I want this company to succeed. Right now the phishing is a direct threat and I'm not one to back down. There may end up being nothing I can do beyond education but I want to be god damned sure that's the case.
