RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@travisdh1 I like this forum as it has a no bullshit semi-adversarial feel. Reminds me of the scientific approach - put up or shut up & may the best evidence win.
That little bit of edgy-ness keeps me sharp.

Why would the manufacturer mill out new metal chassis when they just need to pop in a fresh platter?
There's no way that they actually refurb'd a drive - absolutely no way. This is just a word for used.
I'd be shocked if you have proof that anyone is popping these drives open in a clean room to swap parts.
At best refurb'd here means that they tested it and or did a full drive wipe. At best

RE: Modern iPad security: the most secure endpoint ever?
Modern device security begins and ends with the meat sack using it. Secure the meat sack and you'll be fine with pretty much any device.

4" un-treated fence posts, 1" Marine fine grade good one side plywood.
How fancy you get after that is up to you.

In cases like this it's challenging, because it's not just a thing in your presence, it's something you're using that 100% depends on someone else to manage/maintain it.
Only challenging in that you have no physical recourse, you are left only with the court system. It's clear cut that you bought and paid for a service and they chose not to deliver the paid for service after they took off with the money.
It's it hosted in Canada? which makes it just that much harder to sue over.
I have a truck, a baseball bat, spray paint etc and I'm willing to drive long distances to... express frustration... for a fee

I set up my servers with RAID 10 and 10 or 15 K RPM Drives and a dedicated RAID card and an SSD Drive for CacheCade.
However with the decrease in pricing for SSD drives, I would like to start using them more in servers.
- Still do RAID 10 with SSD's?
- Is a dedicated RAID card still needed if using SSD's?
- Usually RAID 5 makes sense. Still RAID 10 if you want maximum performance. Be aware that you can saturate almost any SATA/SAS controller with the performances of 6-7 SSD.
- Apply the same consideration for the HDD.
I actually came here to ask about #1 - is that 6 drives in raid10? Has anyone measured this / tested it etc?
Yes, xByte tested that. It saturated REALLY low.

@nashbrydges Nice looking rack
old school actually with round holes. do not see that much.
I'd gladly trade the round holes for my square hole racks with the nutcerts that have me impaling my hand with a screwdriver a few times a year.

Hrm, so, do katanas and broadswords count as cheat codes? I have no fencing sabers, but lots of other large, sharp, heavy objects. The katana/wakizashi combo is my personal favorite. (Yes, it is VERY dangerous to enter my house uninvited. Large swords in small spaces are the things nightmares are mde from.)

The Altras have a HUGE toebox and extremely comfortable for longer runs where your feet might start to swell.
Interesting.. this is the problem I have with my latest pair of Nike's - the toe box is small.. .just walking hurts my feet. I typically wear size 12 normal - these are just small.
You should definitely give a pair of Altras a spin then, the extra room is amazing and they fit great otherwise. I like being able to "splay" my toes out when my foot strikes the ground, it feels a lot more natural than what you get from most other shoes. The Sketcher GoRuns are not joke either. I was skeptical about buying a pair until I put them on. They are so light it almost feels like they are not there. I've had them for a little over 5 months now and they are just now starting to really wear out to the point I shouldn't run anything over 2 miles in them.
wow, burning through a pair of shoes in 5 months... cra cra!
Normally I try to restrict how much I wear my running shoes for anything outside of quality time on the pavement. These were so comfortable I got into the habit of basically wearing them all the time... And for some reason I seem to be extra abusive to my shoes.
Realistically, if you run regularly for less than 30 miles a week, you should be able to make them last for somewhere in the range of 6 to 8 months. If you don't run at all, the sky's the limit!
I'm currently super proud of destroying a pair of running shoes for their intended purpose for the first time ever
