"screen" is available within the bootable USB.
      screen dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 bs=1M
      Ctrl-A then D to detach
Up arrow then enter 3 more times...

This will continue to run even if the console is lost (ssh) or if the user logs out
screen -R to re-attach a session if you want to check the status

      Having said that:
      dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 conv=notrunc
Should take only seconds and delete the partition table and is less work than using fdisk in the event that wipefs isn't available on the bootable USB.

Calgary is weird due to the mountains but I can guarantee that we'll have several weeks of "shorts weather" (if you're a Canadian, this means anything higher than +10C :P) in the middle of winter while the rest of Canada will be buried beneath snow.

2 years ago I was skiing in beautiful fresh deep powder in 15C weather...

Unfortunately for @darrel, Winnipeg just looks overcast, cold, and blustery all winter long 😞

@darrel : count your blessings. We "were blessed" with ~12" of snow today in Calgary and it will continue on until about 4am according to Environment Canada.

      alt text

A record-breaking 15 to 25 centimetres fell in Calgary overnight, CBC meteorologist Christy Climenhaga told the Calgary Eyeopener Tuesday morning. The previous record for Oct. 2 was set in 1954 with only about five centimetres.

"But the all-time extreme record for one day in October is about 30 centimetres in 1914, so you guys are on your way to breaking that," she said.

By 4:30 p.m., parts of the city had reported getting 40 centimetres, the city said in a release.

@scottalanmiller said in New Tablet Search:

Yeah, I get all that. But this is definitely just "normal USB", as it is a normal computer. Concepts unique to mobility don't apply here. So either OTG is a reference to all USB, or it's not applicable here. You would never call the USB port on your laptop or desktop OTG, and unless you do, you don't here.

But it's not a normal computer, it's a hybrid tablet running a Mobile/Tablet only OS utilizing a similar architecture to Android but with Chrome as it's UI instead of android.view/android.webkit.

    • RE: New Tablet Search

@scottalanmiller : OTG essentially refers to the ability to connect a device via USB as opposed to the USB port providing only power and the ability to have the phone transfer data with it.

Phones and tablets had USB connectors for years before you could actually connect a mouse, keyboard, or USB flash drive to them.

Only relatively new Android phones (~3 years?) support OTG -- the ability to have the phone act as a flash storage device when connected to a PC OR allow one to read the contents of a USB flash drive plugged into that port (or keyboard, mouse, or usb-to-ethernet adapter).

So yeah, OTG is basically just "every day USB" from the standpoint of a computer, but on a mobile device or tablet is referenced as OTG.

      From Wikipedia:

Standard USB uses a master/slave architecture; a host acts as the master device for the entire bus, and a USB device acts as a slave. If implementing standard USB, devices must assume one role or the other, with computers generally set up as hosts, while (for example) printers normally function as slaves. In the absence of USB OTG, cell phones often implemented slave functionality to allow easy transfer of data to and from computers. Such phones, as slaves, could not readily be connected to printers as they also implemented the slave role. USB OTG directly addresses this issue.

edit: Looking at this though, the highest percentage of "non white" ethnicities is Filipino.

    • RE: Recommendations for Cameras

I typically run with Dahua (or Hikvision in a pinch) mixed with their own branded NVRs or, if software based, BlueIris.
Both models of cameras are professional grade and look the part but can be a little costly.
The Dahua cameras have several models with the "Starlight" sensor which makes low light situations look fantastic and easy to identify.
Check out https://ipcamtalk.com for tons of reviews, footage, etc of many different cameras.
Dahua aren't usually sold to "end users" in North America but there's a guy on Alibaba that ships straight from China cheaply and with NA firmware. He's highly used on IPCamTalk and I've personally purchased a few dozen cameras from him. https://www.aliexpress.com/store/1859367

    • RE: FreeOffice Command Line Options?

Does something like TextMaker (or Presentations) /? or --help not show any command line options?
No manpages as per @black3dynamite (assuming linux : "man textmaker")

EDIT: according to the docs, there are shell script wrappers offered. Perhaps checking the contents of one of them may be helpful?

Alternatively, the following shell scripts are available for launching the programs:
      textmaker16 launches TextMaker
      planmaker16 launches PlanMaker
      presentations16 launches Presentations
To start an application, execute the corresponding script (e.g. in a shell).

    • RE: Saving space by leaving NTFS hard links with tree size pro

Not to seem daft, but wouldn't removing the duplicates entirely in order to clean up the file tree/structure make more sense in the long run? I understand that specific users may look in a specific folder for a file expecting it to be there, whereas another user would look another place, but I'd use this time to make the appropriate folder structure and place the files where they belong...

    • RE: Windows 10 ignoring display sleep inactivity settings

@wrcombs & @DustinB3403, I have performed a gpresults while the GPO was active and verified that the settings matched what was shown on the devices.
After removing the power settings in GPO, performed a "gpupdate /force" JIC and after a reboot, I performed another gpresult and verified that there were no settings being applied.
I then manually configured power settings on 2 PCs via control panel on the devices themselves and the issue persists.

For a device where display sleep is configured for "NONE":

powercfg /query shows the following :

      Subgroup GUID: 7516b95f-f776-4464-8c53-06167f40cc99 (Display)
          GUID Alias: SUB_VIDEO
Power Setting GUID: 3c0bc021-c8a8-4e07-a973-6b14cbcb2b7e (Turn off display after)
            GUID Alias: VIDEOIDLE
            Minimum Possible Setting: 0x00000000
            Maximum Possible Setting: 0xffffffff
            Possible Settings increment: 0x00000001
            Possible Settings units: Seconds
Current AC Power Setting Index: 0x00000000
Current DC Power Setting Index: 0x0000012c

      And the appropriate registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Power\PowerSettings\7516b95f-f776-4464-8c53-06167f40cc99\3c0bc021-c8a8-4e07-a973-6b14cbcb2b7e
          Attributes REG_DWORD 0x2
Description REG_EXPAND_SZ @%SystemRoot%\system32\powrprof.dll,-402,Video power down timeout after idle detection.
FriendlyName REG_EXPAND_SZ @%SystemRoot%\system32\powrprof.dll,-403,Video power down timeout

          ValueMin REG_DWORD 0x0
          ValueUnits REG_EXPAND_SZ @%SystemRoot%\system32\powrprof.dll,-80,Seconds

I'll create a new scope on a test laptop that's on-site and will advise.

      Thanks!
