I am running all my sites off of AWS S3 buckets and with global CloudFront enabled for less than $1,00/mo. Even have a few basic eCommerce type sites running on this using stripe and a free heroku dyno for payments. you can always run an ec2 instance if you needed the server.

RE: NAS or SAM-SD?
@dafyre being entirely for a photo archive I would have went with 5 Google Apps Unlimited accounts (in your case Google for Education is free and has unlimited storage as standard) and had users store photos in Drive. If you had to pay anything, for $50/mo that be pretty competitive pricing and no drives to worry about replacing ever. Plus, add in the features Google Photos has built into it that would be a nice benefit for users for their photo archives.

RHEL Download Subscription Free
Is RHEL available for use without a subscription? I can see the Evaluation Download page but nothing seems to be free.

RE: Voice/Greeting recording for generic holidays and other messages...Where do you get them from?
You could just head over to your nearest Mac and open up terminal.
say -v Kathy -o "audiofile.aiff" -f "textfile.rtf"
You can replace Kathy with any of the Mac voices (ie Alex, Bruce, Fred, Kathy, Vicki, Victoria). That outputs it to an audio file and reads from a source file.
say -v Kathy "This is our new holiday greeting."

Battery life on a Mac - How typical is my cycle count average?
I've had a MacBook Pro R 15" mid-2015 since the start of Sept and looking at my batteries Cycle Count I'm already at 229. The max cycles for this machine is around 1000 according to Apple which at this rate (((229/257)*1000)/365) will give me ~2.4yrs of battery life.
Am I using this a bit too aggressively or on track with how others use their Mac?

RE: Need a Good Bottle of Scotch
@DustinB3403 @scottalanmiller each bottle sold over a span of a few years. the display plinth was made available when the last one was released. It comes apart of course...

RE: Need a Good Bottle of Scotch
I really enjoyed the Highland Park Valhalla Collection: Thor, Loki, Freya, Odin. There's 800 others behind and around in that room. Still working on trying them all.

RE: Tool to Backup Files to Amazon S3
@scottalanmiller said in Tool to Backup Files to Amazon S3:
Keep in mind, if you delete the original file S3 is not a backup system, it is an archival storage system without a backup.
not entirely true. if you enable versioning on the s3 bucket a delete will not delete the file permanently. add to the bucket MFA Delete and then you'd have to issue the mfa token to even delete a file.
as you can see the bucket it empty after deleting the index.html file, but it's not, all versions still exist.

Is the YouTube live free?
I can seem to find any pricing on it anywhere, and other streaming services seem to be crazy expensive.
Yes. Works great if you're a Google Apps customer.
If not, you can create a Google account using your corporate email without having to create a Gmail account. It may give you access to this. There are some services that require the Gmail account (Hangouts for example does not work with this type of account). signup without gmail
Or, if you have a gmail account already and want to use your corporate email with it just add it to the alternate emails so that if someone shares or adds you using your corp email it will work automatically in google services. As a Google Apps for Work user I often share docs with non-GApps customers and they request access using their Gmail account which causes confusion sometime as to who is who. This solves this type of situation.

RE: Mac Users...
I can only second the issues mac mail has in general. We have a user that continues to use it despite the reoccurring issues it gives him. Theirs is using it with Gmail/GApps but signature issue is exactly the same and other problem is sync failing with email and calendar..

RE: OWA Thoughts
If I'm ever at an Exchange shop I pray that pop/imap is enabled and I feed messages into Gmail. (otherwise forward all tends to work but isn't as nice). Luckily I've only been at 1 using Exchange in the last 6 and they did have it enabled.

RE: File transfer websites
Using Google Apps for Work Unlimited I've setup a dedicated domain just for storage and get unlimited for $50/month. Servers backup data to there using https://github.com/odeke-em/drive

RE: PayPal alternatives
@Dashrender a sort code and account number isn't private. it's on every cheque you have right there for anyone you pay to see. it's also on some bank debit cards. i've never had someone not share their details if I needed to pay them.
these details are published widely even by major banks like Barclays and utility companies, Thames Water so you can pay them. -
RE: Video Camera Recommendation
Going with a Logitech/Microsoft webcam option you could mount a few in that room to get direct view of each side.
Now that I'm saying this, you could even implement a CCTV system and create logins for remote viewing capabilities. The recording would be taken care of as well. Benefit would be a bit less setup each time you needed to get a live stream going but from systems I've used the recording only works in shorter file sizes so a single continuous file for the session may be an issue.

RE: PayPal alternatives
@BBigford true, after looking at the fees page, transfers using PayPal balances or using bank account are free for same currency transfers. I only use PayPal purchasing or selling items and always use a credit card because of the extra protection and benefits credit card purchases have so fees always apply.
The added burden of having to create a PayPal account seems un-necessary when all I need to do is get bank details of an already existing account someone has to send them money.

RE: PayPal alternatives
@JaredBusch For the last 10 years (maybe more), I've always found it easy, get the sort code and account number, login to bank, enter sort code, account, amount and click send - done. sending via the mobile app via sms is even easier, no sort code or account number needed, just their phone number.

RE: Video Camera Recommendation
We only had a single stream and didn't care about the watermark so Wirecast free version was enough but check out Open Broadcaster Software for a FOSS alternative that has more features.
