LinkedIn has been hugely successful for me. I've had recruiters from Google, Facebook, Amazon, F5 and may others reach out to me directly for roles. Turn on your setting Let recruiters know youโ€™re open to opportunities and hopefully that should trigger a bunch of opportunities.

If he had 2fa on this it would have never happened. I've already said that it's the first thing he needs to do on all his accounts. @travisdh1 not sure what is difficult. it's a straight forward thing and has always just worked for not only me but 100s of employees where i've rolled this out in previous roles.

Looking at the UK at a similar ยฃ40k salary just 24% tax on that and healthcare is included. sure vat is higher at 20% but it's already calculated into the costs for goods and food is 0 rated along with a bunch of other stuff.

the value I get here for the tax I pay is like I've won the lottery compared to when I was in the us. and saying that, the lottery winnings here are 0 rated too - no taxes to pay if you win it big.

    • RE: Saving a dying server

it's now moving over to AWS where the rest of the companies servers are. this started with one small local project many years back outside of the main dev/r&d team at hq and grew to host more systems for not only our local uk team but those in all our other offices in the us, ru, & il.

Fasthosts are being quite responsive and helpful. This is the latest from them once I said why wasn't this configured with hardware RAID from the start.

"A DS710i will have had raid configured, unless the server is of certain flavours of Ubuntu, which don't support software raid in a stable manner. Your older server is Ubuntu 12.04, which is one of those affected builds.

Your other server has hardware raid configured, I believe.

Based on your screenshot, only one drive was configured at all - /sdb contains no partitions. I assume that this means the performance issues are purely due to issues on /sda. As this contains all of your data and system files, replacing this will require a rebuild of the server. Following that, we can connect the existing disk for data recovery"

My tax rate (counting healthcare) is something like 35% when I looked at my last paystub for 2015. Refund this will be about $3k because I forgot to change the amounts last fall like I generally do once I have paid in enough to cover my taxes.

@JaredBusch another perk of the uk - no filing of taxes is generally necessary - the PAYE system keeps track of how much you earn and pay as the year goes on.

    • Helping a company comply with HIPAA

So I've been speaking to a friend that works for an early learning (0-3) company and they have their clients signing documents relating to HIPAA but I'm finding a lot of gaps in their IT systems which don't come close to complying with HIPAA. They are using a cloud document system, OpenDrive, that has no reference to being HIPAA compliant for instance, laptops that have no encryption or security on them, etc.

I've not been involved with any company before that needs to be HIPAA compliant so wondering what resources there are I can look at or advice from those here to help move them to being more compliant.

They are a small company (8-10 staff, all 1099 employed in IL) with nearly 0 extra funds or resources so any solution needs to keep this in mind. Most of their staff are either on Gmail or familiar with it so looking at the GApps platform I see there's a HIPAA BAA solution with them and for $5/user/month the cost isn't going to be much more than OpenDrive but it provides them much more than just document storage.

Has anyone been able to get a mac mini (running server) to act as a host for xenserver iso's?

The smb share has failed entirely
I managed to get xenserver to see and add the nfs share but the VMs are failing to attach to it

my nfs share is configured in /etc/exports as
      /share/iso -maproot=root:wheel -network 10.70.0.0 -mask 255.255.252.0

      I also tried
      /share/iso -mapall=501 -network 10.70.0.0 -mask 255.255.252.0

Imagine if someone claimed to be saving the company $100K per year by ordering plastic Bic pens instead of gold plated ones. Everyone would laugh at them for making up such a silly alternative to show value. That's what is going on here. Its' a false comparison to make something trivial and standard appear like a big success.

No way I would laugh at someone being able to accomplish this. Unless the company was just going into administration and this was part of extreme cost cutting measures, the challenges this person must have faced, the endless number of meetings needed to try to convince people they no longer get gold pens and now get plastic bic.. hats off to you sir, that is quite an accomplishment

@johnhooks had to bring this up in "that other thread that got out of hand". So I decided to start a thread dedicated to taxes, and what is or is not reasonable.

For the record, I make less than $40k/year currently, have 20.5% taken in deductions, and a 7.5% local sales tax. Also, yes, I'm getting the resume and precis ready for a job hunt.

Does anyone think 28% when making less than 40k is reasonable? (Actually get to spend ~28,800.) That doesn't include the healthcare crazy.

you're paying 20.5% on what you earn and 7.5% on what you spend so you're not at 28% tax with $28.8k to spend. it's $31.8k spendable

Did you make any changes to the LAN Sync feature in Dropbox? I've always seen big improvements when blocking cloud sync services over WLAN within the office via endpoint software. e.g. Symantec
