Has anyone tried combining Chocolatey with something like Salt yet?

      How did we manage this:

      Someone salted all the things!

I'm still a little bit salty about the whole thing.

    • S/MIME and Office 365

We utilize internally signed certificates for S/MIME email encryption here, and when I arrived (and continuing to this day) the means for people to get set up for them to send a signed email out to the entire company, and the entire company replies back with a signed email. Everyone adds the certificate to their client, and life goes on. This is inconvenient, and very difficult to manage particularly when we have to invalidate a cert or one expires.

We are also on Office 365. When someone, using Outlook 2016 for Mac tries to send an email and they do not have a stored cert for the recipient a message pops up asking if they want to search Active Directory. This got me to thinking, and I'm hoping that someone here can help.

It looks like the only way to push certs to Office 365 is using AD Sync. I'd like to do that at some point, but we don't have the departmental bandwidth to set it up right now with all the potential for breakage. Is there a way to manually (using a script) to push public keys to O365? If that is not the case, is there a way to specify the search path for the cert retrieval so we can point Outlook to the local CA?

Why would I want to do this? I see no point?

Why would you want to be able to run Linux commands/applications natively on Windows instead of having to resort to Cygwin? If you're in a situation where you can't run Linux as your desktop this is great. In general I think it is just a step in the right direction, but it is more of a step than they have made in a long time. I'm hopeful we'll see Office for Linux in the near future.

And Civ VI has eaten the last few days for me. It is really different, but similar enough to still be Civ and fun. They addressed some significant annoyances for me (my missionaries can fight other missionaries by calling down lightning on them, you can go to war when someone converts your city with reduced warmongering penalties). I'm still reserving judgement, but I'm having fun, and I feel like my money was well spent.

@nadnerB said in Windows 10 Mobile Cannot reinstall Skype Preview:

Just for future reference as I'm probably going to 'accidentally' uninstall the app again:

I have been having issues reinstalling Skype Preview from my Lumia running Windows 10 Mobile for a while

Turns out the issue is related to the fact that it must be installed on "This Device" and NOT on the SD card (D:). The error message (if you can get the 0x8 number) isn't helpful and the app doesn't have a prerequisite check for default storage location.

Change the save location for new apps in Settings --> System --> Storage. Don't forget to press 'apply' 😉

      • Download the app again
      • Then change the default install location back to SD Card (D:)

I had to do this with a number of system level after doing a factory reset. Somewhere between versions they made it a requirement.

    • Mocking the Apple live event

This is painful to watch. I don't know if I can keep this up. There are so many things to make fun of. Microsoft has technical people or people that oversee technical people do the presentations. Apple uses marketing people to present. It produces a marked difference.

    • RE: what windows server should I choose for Active directory?

There are alternatives, but none are as mature and in the same range of ease of set up. I don't know that much is to be gained by branching out to another solution in the long run. I would recommend taking to heart many of the comments in this thread about virtualizing and careful planning/following Best Practices.

Migrating to this is going to be painful. It is going to take a long time to migrate user profiles over. If there is a means to doing it given their infrastructure, I would see if you can do it in phases, perhaps a team at a time.

@scottalanmiller said in Buying vs Saving Economic Theory:

@Kelly said in Buying vs Saving Economic Theory:

The problem with the 2% working with 98% not theory is that it doesn't accommodate for the human desire for power. It would be an amazing situation to be in except for the fact that some people will not be content with what they receive and not interested in earning more. If everyone lived free from fear, then it will work, but very few people do, and that leads to seeking power to insulate from fear.

That's true, except that nearly all of the 98% don't have power. The majority of people don't seek to be leaders and fewer still manage to be. Those getting power from work are the few, not the many. And many that do use it for evil, so curtailing that has a major positive benefit. Few people derive power from work, and given the protection of the system it removes much of the need for power.

I don't know that removing the economic factor affects the desire for power. I'm not addressing power via work, but desire for power over others in general. Gangs do not exist to commit crimes. They exist because of fear, and people control others or allow themselves to be controlled to mitigate fear. Economics play into it, but are not the primary motivator.
