I did find a few on Google from some school districts. And this is a single user and close friend to our lead engineer. He will be engineering buildings for us an while, along with our in office engineers.

Might be OK just this once but making a "policy" just makes sense now.

We were going to just share files via DropBox or the like but the push suddenly came to get him VPN access like NOW. 😞

Odd I though you meant a software/IT consultant. You should have HR handle that and have them sign the same AUP as any normal employee. However we don't give these type people network access, they aren't employees. We have an FTP server external engineers share AutoCad, Tekla, and other BIM models over all the time.

      @DustinB3403 said:

@Jason Of course you should for confirmation, but the point of any centrally managed solution is so that you don't have to.

You push updates, you push scans, you push removals, and even system restarts.

Centrally managed doesn't mean you don't need to confirm, that's not the point. The point is alerts. And also ease of deployment in a large environment.

That's not how centrally managed AV works. It does not "push" definition updates. The AV client pulls them, you might have a local cache of updates, but it's still pulling them and you don't generally pick and choose. You can push scheduled scans with GPO's even with standalone endpoints.

If it takes 3 minutes to clean up(scan/remove/reboot/recan) malware on 1 PC and you have 20 PC's you're spending 1 Hour of IT time on managing a solution across those 20 machines.

Central management doesn't play to much in cleaning, yes it can still do it automatically as does standalone endpoints. but you really should still have a technician touch a computer that has had an infection.

Most of the time we just do a webex to get them on a server.

I know alot of geeks love reddit, but the website is so ugly I just can't look at it. Does anyone else feel this way or is just me?

I won't use it just because of it's design.

Huh - I've never had those issues with LMI.

I'm looking to leave LMI only because I'd like to have all 115 machines on my account. To upgrade Central to support that nearly doubles my current cost.

I'm doing a demo with Citrix for GoToAssist. Their standard fee of $69/a tech a month for 100 unattended and unlimited attended will work for my needs. I almost never log into a user's machine unattended. Yeah the cost will be nearly 50% more than I pay today, but that's better than 100% AND I get the ability to use unlimited attended support connections. Plus they can do screen recording and I can make training videos out of those.

But I'll be looking at other options as well before I finalize on an option.

We have Log Me in Rescue and it works great. Don't use it for servers though. I use RDP/Royal TS for that. or RSAT

@WingCreative I would expect the Endpoint solution.

Anything not centrally managed is just more costly to attempt to manage. At any size.

I wouldn't say at any size Small companies with 10-20 wouldn't worth the cost.

    • WSUS breaks windows 10 .Net install

This was an issue with 8.1 as well but we don't have much of that.

Setting the GP as shown here to download from windows updates directly does not seem to help:

My loan officer from Alantic Bay mortgage group asked for my SSN over email. at first I was shocked, then realize it doesn't matter too much. I've had mine stolen through Anthem, Local Government and the IRS now. I haven't replied yet but is this common practice.

Should not be. You just set your secondary and tertiary DNS entries via DHCP to Google and voila, problem fixed.

Um, that's against Best practice and causes AD DNS issues. @Rob-Dunn would fuss at you for that one.

Why? What artifact of Exchange would make it be that way? This goes against both industry knowledge and how Microsoft runs their own Exchange servers.

I should say not virtualized in the sense that it runs on shared storage and does automated Vmotion. Exchange level failovers are much better.

      Only for HDDs, not SSD.

Have you updated the PERC Raid firmware?

      1. Considering what I already have and our requirements, would it just make sense to buy a few more 7.2K drives and make a RAID 10 array out of them? Is there a huge performance difference between those two arrays? (7.2K vs. 10K both in a RAID 10.)

4 at 7.2k can still be fairly slow. The bigger the array the faster it will be.

Not sure about the disk speed requirement, to be honest. Always just assumed go big! 🙂

I'd look into your IOPS. I'd say it's fairly low though.
