Yep, that's what I have. This icon thing is pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things. I wonder if this customer is going to freak out when every release of Office using a different icon.

I never took Server+ or Security+. After taking A+ and Net+ I really wasn't too impressed with CompTIA.

None of them are great. Network+ is their best, I feel. Server+ was okay, very light, though. Security+ was decent. Linux+ was terrible. A+ actually made me dumber.

When I took A+ there was still questions on IRQ numbers and Windows 3.1. Strangely enough this was in 2004, there should have updated the test a looong time ago.

    • RE: How would you counter offer a job proposal

Why would you even consider this? I got a $20k increase for a much longer drive and I still counter offered them and got an additional $3k. I have also counter offered for jobs. Every single time. About 50% of the time they say no, and we are in the same place we were before, but many times they do actually counter.

Hasn't Pawn Stars taught you anything and seriously working for a MSP sucks IMO. I absolutely hated it. Remember their income is relative to how much work you do. If you are salary expect alot of extra work that lines their pockets not yours.

It is much different owning a MSP then working for one as an employee. They are rarely competitive with salary and benefits. You are guaranteed to work much more than 40 hours and deal with shitty customers only to make less.

    • RE: Resume Review - It's that time of year

Here is my more detailed feedback:

75% of your resume focuses on endpoints. Even if that is 75% of your job, I would not make it 75% of your resume. You want your resume to focus on where you are going, and what are you are capable of doing. We get it you can deploy printers and software. Why is that taking so many lines of your resume?

This doesn't seem like a major project to highlight on a resume

This project is better, but I would be more careful how I worded it. FOSS is not a no-cost solution. I also feel like the whole first sentence is a mess.

      • Replatformed physical servers to a virtual environment using Xen Server. Virtualization allowed better management, backups, and resource allocation to existing serves, and allowed for expansion due to the elasticity of virtualization.
      • Supported Server 20008, Ubuntu 18.04, CentOS7, and company workstations (Windows 7 and 10)
      • Leveraged virtualization to implement Disaster Recovery and Planning procedures and documentations
      • Implemented Asset management using (whatever tool you used)
      • Leave the Mobile fleet line out. Nobody cares about numbers of workstations you supported and especially printers. And who tf cares about laptops vs desktops?

Same thing about the numbers here. I do think it is important to mention a multi-site facility, but again nobody cares about the numbers and what you think is impressive is not really that impressive outside SMB. Not going to write these bullet points for you, but use my critiques above.

90% of jobs I'm looking at are remote post covid. Remote work existed before, but was less common

But 90% of good jobs were remote PRE-COVID. Anyone who is remote only because of COVID is a shitty shop that got better because they had to... means that the management failures are still there. Don't be lulled by jobs forced to look better than they are temporarily.

Good shops were always remote (when possible.) You can't be good and make people come into the office just for shits and giggles, the two are polar opposites conceptually. You can only make one thing a priority... is it doing a good job, or is it sitting in an office.

I've still had a few jobs reach out and say they are remote until covid crap is over then they want you to move somewhere.. I just tell them no thanks I'm not interested in even talking.

Did any of those jobs that reached out to you explain why they are no longer going to be remote post-covid?

The reasoning doesn't matter to me. They aren't being competitive in the job market with policies like that.

    • Do you charge up front for a job?

A little over a month ago, I made a deal with ML member to do some work for me. We agreed upon $300 for the job. He asked for half up front so I paid him.

He thought the job would only take X long. He ran into a few complications, but came up with a workaround. I approached him and offered to pay more than what we agreed upon. An extra $150 for a total of $450 for the job. He then told me he under quoted, but that's his fault so he will stick with the $300.

He said he was going to complete the job that day (this was about a month ago.) He never showed up online to do the work. So the next day I messaged him and insisted on paying the extra $150 for the job. He again said the $300 was fine and promised a date. The date came and he didn't show again.

So I messaged him the next day asking if I could help in any way with the project. He said no, it will be done tonight. So I said ok. That night also came and went.

I messaged him a couple days later and nothing. HE was online , but ignoring my messages. I message him nicely every 2-3 days for the next 2-3 weeks. I told him I don't need it done today , but I would just like some communication on the project. After about a month, I have given up and I guess I will need to try dispute the charge.

    • Standard HP Printer Management Password

We have a bunch of HP printers on our network and 99% of them have blank passwords to get into the web management. This is being flagged as a security issue on our network. I want to push out a management password to all printers. Is this possible or will I need to configure all of them one by one?

P.S. I know hackers aren't going to get into our network and change the tray configuration, but my boss wants the security scan notices to go away as we are having pen testing in a month and they flag us for every little thing.
