    • RE: What do you think of Webroot

I would like to vouch for @Nic and webroot.

I bought the home user edition last year for my PCs at home. I even had a free access to Sophos AV due to an agreement acheived with Sophos when we purchased the Enterprise Console. I have yet to use Webroot in a business environment, but I can tell you it is hands down the best client for home users. Its lightweight and it never gets in your way like other home AV products.

@Nic is a pleasure to deal with. He went out of his way a few times to help me with a home product. How many vendor employees will take 20-30 minutes out of your day to help with a low cost home product? I have yet to find one other than Nic. He isn't pushy at all. He knows the product will speak for itself once you install the trial.

I often think that having no degree (What I have) is better than University of Phoenix Master's degree.

All other things being equal (which is not actually possible) that's not actually true. If you could snap your fingers and have that degree, without spending any time, money, or effort, it would be to your benefit, no matter how slight.

This is because it would give you the right to choose when to mention that you have a degree, and when to act like you have none. Because you never have to divulge that you have a degree, it can't hurt you.

I really don't know what to do at this stage in my career. I've got 13 years experience and no degree. It hasn't really stopped me yet, and it seems have enough experience to be considered for positions that require a master's degree.

I interviewed for a senior security engineer position at Harris. It was a master level positon with 8 years experience. They said it was possible to substitute the experience in lieu of the degree. I felt under qualified fo the position, but decided to interview anyway. I was truthful and didn't make it to the second round. But getting the first interview seemed like a minor win in itself.

What are you views on having a Skill rating on your CV?

Also wtf does a bar line graph mean to me or a circle pie graph. Do I say wow this guy is betwen 70-90% in Strategy. Seriously wtf does that mean? The whole rating yourself on a graph or bar is so ridiculous when you just think about it how irrelevant it really is.

    • RE: How to Deal with a Manager on a Power Trip

@thanksajdotcom Here is my honest opinions and advice.

      Scenario 1

I wouldn't take this the manager not thinking you know your stuff. You have to remember you aren't the only one that works there. It may be a friendly reminder he says to everyone. I would not take any offense to that at all. What you said in response definitely came off as aggressive. Nowhere did I see him questioning your experience and/or your ability to do your job.

      Scenario 2

In your response your qualms seem to be circumstantial. You say he is LITERALLY doing nothing, He hits on girls in their 20s, and does not help the older women. All this is going through your head and pissing you off. So you go and make a big deal out of the smallest conversational piece. Your manager and the other co-worker have no idea why you are going off on them about something so trivial. The real reason is all in your head. How are they supposed to know? Then you get upset when he just mirrors the same type of thing you did to him. I don't understand how this is his fault?

Is LinkedIn actually a useful platform? I deleted my account when MS bought it, but I didn't feel like I got any benefit from it at the time.

LinkedIn has been the only useful social media resource IMO. It may not be the best place for IT, but there is no better place to network. LinkedIn jobs have been real and relevant where I've found sites like career builder or monster to be a complete waste of time

As hirers, we've found Facebook to be way better, actually.

I have not seen a single job posting I would take a seriously on FB. Nothing about FB is to be taken seriously from what I have seen.

Yeah you will get garbage in LI as well, but it is much better filtered then other places. LI jobs has one click apply which is super nice. If you have LI premium, you can get useful stats on those jobs.

P.S. Our standardized email signature has been great. Its so nice to make changes on the server for everyone at once. We even have everyone's Title, email address, extension, fax, etc. generated from AD.

I honestly hate images in signatures. Wastes space. even more so if someone prints it.

You can't tell Management that, though.

Your best bet is to get 3 or 4 recruiters to look for you. Remember, you dont have to accept or agree to anything. Let them help you with your search. You may find them sending you unwanted stuff, but thats OK because they are somewhat of a filter

Hmm, I haven't had much luck with recruiters biting

That's surprising. Especially now with the market being so good. It's hard to hire, at least in the US. Recruiters, you would think, would be desperate for candidates.

Recruiters are going crazy right now in US. You can't avoid them if you keep your resume somewhat current.

@Kelly said in Figuring out what you want to do professionally:

      • IT jobs are hard to find and land

This is ALWAYS true when you are not investing in yourself by keeping up to date and is NEVER true when you are staying on top of your training and education.

      • I am not as good as <person> at <task>

You cannot be the best at everything, and thinking your the best at everything is a huge disservice to yourself. Use the people that are more knowledgeable in a certain area to increase your knowledge in that area. It is important to note that you MUST do your own training and your own learning a particular subject before you consult an expert.

      • I should just be loyal/grateful for what I already have because this small business has been good to me

This is the one I hate the most because I see it happen to so many smart people. You need to do what is best for you 100% of the time. Most of the time it will align with your own company, but sometimes it wont.

      • I can't decide what I want to do

This kind of goes hand in hand with my first point. If you keep yourself current, this will NEVER be an issue. You will always find areas you love and areas you may not like. Because your continuing education should be in different areas you will always be going a new direction throughout your career.
