I need to find the time a user logged out last night. Is there a simple way to find this info in AD?

Are you able to check the event log on the PC?
      Security Log: Event ID 4634

I found out that this was requested because the employee didnt clock out and wasn't exactly sure what time she left. Needless to say, I didn't go any further once I found this out.

I have worked with MSPs before. Like Scott said they are all different. I have found they are not for me, but I know alot of people like working for them.

I prefer the owning a particular network and building an everyday relationship with my users.

    • IIS Welcome Page Not Displaying

I am troubleshooting an issue with a website hosted from a 2008 R2 Server. This website is in a test environment and is supposed to be as similar to the live site as possible.

When I go to the website URL, the page loads and I can access a few links but not much else. Our Vendor has been troubleshooting this issue for weeks to no avail. We did find something interesting though. On production when you type http://localhost/ you the get the IIS7 welcome screen, but when you do it on the test server you get just a blank page..

      Any ideas?

I feel like this may be what is causing the issue. I would like to avoid resintalling IIS if possible because I have certificates installed and quite a bit of configuration into the site.

I had a friend that worked a consulting company - that consulting company (for lack of a better term) rented out employees to other business for 6 month to 1 year contracts. Who does that employee work for? the consulting company or the renting company?

That is basically what I did. It is different than working for a MSP, because ALL your daily tasks come from COMPANY1. The staffing company just wrote the paychecks. COMPANY1 paid Staffing company and the Staffing company wrote a check to me for 70% or whatever they were paid and kept the 30%. (I am guessing on the numbers, but I would suppose it was something similar to that.). I never talked to the staffing company, my hours, tasks, and everything else about my job was approved by COMPANY1.

Staffing Agencies really seem to benefit. Most of the ones I have dealt with have very little technical knowledge and their internal employees have high turnaround. It seems like they are just in a race to bid against other staffing companies for positions. Once you staff a position, you sit on reoccurring income for doing literally nothing.

    • RE: What are your thoughts about HP Instant Ink?

      @david.wiese said:

@IRJ my dads inkjet was just ruined by using a third party cartridge in his HP printer. All it takes is 1 time and you have your justification to not using 3rd party cartridges.

I think like StrongBad is saying, its an odds game. If you win 90% of the time you more than pay for destroyed printer. In my case my printer was $120 at Office Depot. I have since seen the price drop to $99 on Amazon. I can save $82.50 each time I use 3rd party so if 80% of reviewers are having success with printers and another 10% don't know what they are doing. It makes much more sense to use the 3rd party ink.

There are actually some cheaper alternatives but they either have 2 star reviews or no reviews. The one I posted has 58 reviews. Of those 58 reviews 35 reviewers had a 5 star experience and 5 reviewers had a 4 star experience.

I would have paid monthly, but if they do end up canceling the service somewhere along the line. I believe that they would give you fair warning. Until then, sail that ship till it sinks. You could get years or perhaps a lifetime before you have to abandon ship.

    • Resume Feedback

I had my resume professionally done a few years ago and it really helped me find a job. I was able to get several interviews immediately after putting out my new resume. I added two other employers and now it is 2 and a half pages in length. I would like to get it down to two pages.

I am going to take off the part of about testing efficiency. Do you think I should drop off GeekSquad too on my Resume? I was also thinking about removing the High School Diploma part. That should go without saying, right?

The question that should be asked is does the dedication to the IT industry mean you should sacrifice your hobbies?

A better question, if IT isn't your hobby, should you have a different job? One that more closely matches you true likes and desires.

Would you ask a car mechanic the same who doesn't want to fix cars in his free time?

Most mechanics I know also have their own fun cars they work on as a hobby.

Mechanics have the mostly beaters in my experience. There is no need for FUN as they break down enough already 😉

I think that progression is listed fairly well for a working foundation. To add to that (in no particular order)...

      Network+ > CCNA

Why not CCENT > CCNA? CCENT is basically the same as Network+, but gives you credit towards CCNA

Because it costs money and, as you said, it's basically the same thing. I've told people to just keep studying and skip it if they already have the Net+. Assuming they want to keep going and are considering the CCENT because they think it holds more merit than the Net+ as far as difficulty and industry recognition goes. Only reason is I think it's just a waste of money when someone could spend more time studying for the CCNA and just go ahead and test on that.

      Just my opinion though.

I agree, I'd rather have the Net+ and the CCNA because it's two totally different exams and tests. The CCENT is pointless if you get the CCNA.

Eli the computer guy abhors the CCNA. Not sure the story on that.

Eli the computer guy is far from an authority on anything IMO.

I'm sure he would beg to differ. I randomly decided to let a couple of his daily vlogs run in the background, the dude is quite sure of himself when it comes to be an IT person. What would make you think he's got nothing to offer? Just curious.

I've had run ins with him on SW where he was violating policy and said that he could do anything that he wanted there basically because he was more important than all of us. Very unprofessional, I felt.

Not surprising. I get that vibe from his videos. He thinks he is a god.

      Services and user running them
