I only got to read the first paragraph of the article because wired complained about my adblock. Sorry Wired, but I trust your adds like I trust a hobo to keep an eye on my good whisky.

      Yup, same here.

I mostly browse news on my iphone or ipad. and the "reader" view typically gets around that.

The name change makes sense, but the name G Suite is just terrible. I can understand Google not wanting people to confuse Google Apps with Android type Apps. Because they really aren't just apps they are an office suite.

Even Google Suite would have been better. Or just Google Office (unless that is trademarked).

The irony is that I am sure they spent thousands testing the performance of this name change. It makes you wonder what the other options were...

Probably a sickening amount was tested on focus groups. They must have only focus tested on the hip millennials who think saying Google is too much work. I'm sure they are now saying G it instead of Google it.

I have tested a few times, and it works great. This is a huge help and I don't have to worry about limits or trials. It's completely free.

That's more like what I was thinking. Multiuser Notepad is really what we like to use.

      Q

We were considering Google Apps for Quixotic, but the team is small and everyone was already very used to Microsoft tools. So, at least for now, we went with Office 365 instead. But Google Apps was a strong contender. It's a great product.

Our Principle Engineer came from a strong Microsoft background so that played a big role, even though we are not focused on Microsoft development tools.

I hoped this would be an interesting thread on Google Apps, but it turns out to be another Spiceworks slag-fest 😞

For me, there's an open source feel about Google Apps, with all the third-party scripts available as well as a pretty powerful API that let's you write your own applications. I've spent some time on this trying to get our ERP application to update jobs on Google Maps Coordinate, with limited success. There's a good site here https://developers.google.com/oauthplayground/ where you can see what API features are available with all of Google's products. I find it all a bit of a mess and the documentation is pretty limited. There's an assumption that you have a high degree of competency already when developing Google apps, which I don't have as I'm not a web developer and have no prior experience of OAuth. I think I'm in far too deep trying to develop Google Maps Coordinate, but if you're a professional developer I imagine Google app development is a lot of fun.

      Does O365 have similar?

Office 365 uses ADFS, which has an SDK available for it, if you want applications with true SSO. Otherwise, the clients are your typical Outlook, Lync, Excel, etc, so most of the addons would be targeted towards them. SharePoint Designer's available for SharePoint. Since Office 365 includes PowerShell, it can be used as a tie-in for third-party administrative solutions.
