P.S. Our standardized email signature has been great. Its so nice to make changes on the server for everyone at once. We even have everyone's Title, email address, extension, fax, etc. generated from AD.

NTG has a client that has a program that does that as well.

I did mine via HTML as a rule in Exchange. Once you populate everything in AD, it works great.

    • RE: Facebook Ads

Facebook Ads can be a homerun, but they can also be a strikeout, too. You have to engage people to get likes, comments, and shares. The more engagement you get the cheaper your ad becomes and the more facebook puts out your ad.

      @shannon said in Facebook Ads:

I find Facebook ads to be highly targeted as well! I always see things I'm shopping for pop up on my Facebook feed soon after. I also see tons of ads from other storage vendors, which is always fun and makes me wonder:

Facebook is, in many cases, (not all!), more of a leisure activity. Does that affect how receptive you are to ads for B2B products (ahem, business storage) as opposed to B2C products (i.e. fishing pole or pair of shoes)?

I'd say yeah people would probably tend to lean more towards personal type products on facebook, but if your targeting is good you can probably find some receptive individuals.

For me the goal of Facebook ads has been to get Likes. Once you get the likes on your page, then you target actual sales. Once you get a facebook like you then have the ability to show on that person's news feed. So instead of advertising to them once you can target them multiple times. It is much easier to set a goal for likes instead of sales.

“People who say they don’t care about privacy because they have got nothing to hide have not thought too deeply about these issues. What they are really saying is I do not care about this right. When you say I don’t care about the right to privacy because I have nothing to hide, that is no different than saying I don’t care about freedom of speech because I have nothing to say or freedom of the press because I have nothing to write.”

    • RE: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It

@dashrender said in If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It:

In terms of IT systems, broken means unnecessary exposed to hacking, data theft, data loss, downtime and inefficiencies. In the real world, we should be considering the system to be broken the moment that maintenance is needed. How much ransomware would not be a threat today if systems were simply properly maintained? As IT we need to stand up and explain that unmaintained systems are already broken, disaster just hasn’t struck yet.

This is probably the most important paragraph in that entire piece!
This is something every person should be taught about anything, everything they deal with.

      Agreed.

One of the things we learn in IT Risk management is that your asset is valued by how much business you will lose in the event of a failure.

Alot of people value their systems by their initial cost or cost of replacement. With this mentality you will always try to milk the longevity of the product to trick yourself into thinking you have more cost benefit then really exists, and your potential for risk just continues to grow.

If looking at actual business loss, the no brainer decision will always be proper maintenance and security.

    • So I learned a ton about apps

Last week, I decided I was going to attempt to build an app. I did alot of research and found a completely free app builder http://appsbar.com

AppsBar allows you to create an app with practically no knowledge of code. It's a GUI interface that gives you a basic menu with some different widget options. The main widgets I used were either HTML code, which I baked directly into the app, and a link widet. The link widget just functions as an internal app browser. So I was able to just point to various sections of my website. I did end up using a calendar widget too, which is pretty cool because you can add events to your google calendar in two quick taps. Then I customized the icons within the menu.

Once the app was built, it was functional but not pretty. It has a very basic menu, but it would be great for a small business that just wants to show case their website. It also has an ad on it which links back to the AppsBar homepage which lets everyone know you built it for free. Since selling my app is not my intention at this point, that wasn't a big deal for me.

      Round 2 - Fight

The app wasn't as visually appealing as I wanted and it lacked some basic features I would like to see. I started doing some research on different paid app builders. Let me tell you what, there are alot of them.

The first one I tried was http://appery.io , but this was above my head since I am not really a programmer. So I ended up abandoning that idea and I found http://appmakr.com . Once I got signed up with AppMakr it was love at first sight, the pricing is right, the interface was easy to work with yet powerful, and you could build your app completely free and only decide to pay if you were satisfied with your app at the end.

I got the Pro package. One really cool thing about the Pro package is that they submit to the app store for you. It goes under their developer account, but in my case it's really cool that I don't have to pay the $100 developer fee to get my app in the App Store.
      upload-536cce93-d27f-48f1-b072-3ea4589653fd

My app is now in the playstore and I am pretty happy with it. I do have two tickets opened with some minor issues and I could go through and fix some of the HTML formatting, but that's what happens when you pull an all nighter.

If anyone is interested in testing the app for me, I would really appreciate it. It's basic and doesn't require much information other than an internet connection and location information (which it doesn't use so you could turn off your gps).

    • DB Help on SQL Server

I have some DB corruption and I don't have a good recent backup. All data appears to be fine, but when I run a DBCC CHECKDB I get this

      Msg 8905, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Extent (1:1534320) in database ID 7 is marked allocated in the GAM, but no SGAM or IAM has allocated it.

When I google the error I find a Microsoft Article about the error which leads me to this table. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa275767(v=SQL.80).aspx

      [img]jhpHwCq.png

Can someone help me better understand this error and what impact it could have? It appears everything is working properly. I have tried copying the DB to a test server and running DBCC CheckDB ('Database', REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS) and even that will not remove the Allocation Error.

I upgraded my work PC to Windows 10 last night. So far so good. Everything works.

I am still getting used to Windows 10. It seems to be a bit slower than Windows 8.1. Maybe I need another reboot or something.

I don't sleep very much, and not really soundly, but I don't think I could sleep in my car. Besides, living out of my car for 5 days a week is not appealing.

For a week or two? I spent a week in the everglades a few years ago. You want to talk about uncomfortable?

Yeah, I did it in NY where I got to have a blanket, not worry about lacking air conditioning.

I have no AC in my car...

I am not going to press the issue anymore. If you were serious about advancing your career and grabbing an opportunity when it came you could make it work. You never know how a person is living till you walk in their shoes. You may work or be friends with someone whose situation isn't ideal. You could really make it work if you wanted to.

Ok, so assuming I interview and land the job, and maybe they let me start in February, which is all speculative at this point, what is the cheapest way to move a small apartment's worth of stuff?

At this point, I would say do the interview and land the job. Then figure it out. No sense in thinking too hard about it when you may not even score the job.

      Joel,

I was asked by COMPANY1 to inform you that since you did technical support for one of their vendors that is seeking legal action against COMPANY1, then the vendor's attorney may be contacting you. Please remember that you signed a confidentiality agreement with Contractor and COMPANY1 and this precludes you from speaking with the vendor's attorney unless subpoened by a judge to do so.

Please call me if you you would like to discuss or call Jennifer Engle at COMPANY1. I would appreciate your replying that you received this email.

      Thank you.
