If you're looking for something small, the Backbeat FIT by Plantronics is awesome. If you want over the year, the Backbeat Pro is awesome! Don't get the Backbeat GO 2. They are horrible...

Can you take a holiday to a far away place, like the Caribbean or Hawaii or Singapore? Get away from everything for a week or so. Things might seem better after a vacation.

Yeah, thanks. And haha, you're funny. I'll be happy just to get to Spiceworld this year...

    • RE: Weird Issue with Ubuntu DNS

It was just kind of an emergency failover kind of thing. If my internal server went down, my machines could still get online. It's mostly my family so if my internal DNS server has an issue, they won't notice an issue as it'll still resolve with external servers.

      I know I can upgrade..

I'm wondering if I have to use a generic 5.5u2 upgrade disk to do so? Then before or after, manually update all of the drivers?

I know when I went from 5.0 to 5.5 my drivers for Realtek? were not included, so I had to build a custom ISO with the right drivers injected. I'd recommend just using the custom ISO with the right drivers built-in instead of chancing it.

I did an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 (not sure what release) and it upgraded without issue. I don't see why a minor version difference would not be able to upgrade. That seems silly and would limit how many businesses could use the new version.

Yes but you were a teenager and your father worked there...

But he wasn't involved on the project I was on. Not really related.

Just saying if you don't think he had something to do with you getting in there that is silly.

    • Weird Issue with Ubuntu DNS

So with my Ubuntu servers, I pull the IPs via DHCP and set reservations for all my servers. I've found it's easier than trying to set everything static. Anyways, there is a weird issue I've found with how Ubuntu handles DNS server order in /etc/resolv.conf.

I had my DHCP scope set to hand out my local as primary, OpenDNS primary as the secondary option and Google DNS primary as the tertiary. Well, Ubuntu doesn't maintain that order but will order them numerically, which means it puts Google (8.8.8.8) at the top, then my local (172.16.255.10) and then OpenDNS (208.67.222.222). I removed Google DNS from the scope options for DNS and that will hopefully fix it, but it screws up local name resolution.

Has anyone else seen this before?

It makes me sad to see young teens hang out and message each other on facebook while they are in the same room.

But why? They are still spending time together, communicating and sharing with even more people. I know adults love to hate this stuff, but what's the actual negative component to it? People are more social, more connected, more in touch than ever. I see it as wonderful. My kids will never face the loneliness and disconnected world we had no option but to face. Just like other advancements, our kids don't need to hunt for all of their own food or face a world without vaccinations. They can travel farther, faster, more safely. They can attend school and not be afraid of wild animals at night.

That we have improved our lot is not a bad thing.

But in an age where we are more connected than ever, we are also more disconnected than ever. People who are my age and younger may be able to fly on any given electronic device, but basic communication skills are being replaced by the ability to text and chat via IM. Pretty soon we'll live in a world where people can message someone on Facebook or text them, but put a group of people in a room together and tell them to "talk" and they'll have no idea what to do or how to interact like human beings. This is when the technology goes from being a tool as a benefit to something detrimental.

When did they ever? This isn't new. Remember kids with phones in the 1960s?

Yes, but the difference was that a landline wasn't portable. If you went to a restaurant or out in the woods, you didn't have the landline with you. The fact it's not portable and not tied to a location makes the effect that much worse...

This is why interrupting programmers is such a big deal and needs to be avoided. Programmers spend all of their time trying to get into the zone and once they achieve it losing it can be devastating to productivity.

      Amen to that...

    • The Scripting Zone

Before I begin, if someone could make a parody poster of the Twilight Zone but it's the Scripting Zone, I would pay...

Moving on, I am not a programmer. I've done programming and it drives me nuts. However, I love scripting. I know that in many ways they are similar. Right now, for one of the clients I work with, I am writing a script that will accept a few basic inputs and then run all the commands and give you all the output formatted automatically. I've been working on it most of the day and it's coming along quite nicely. I did notice, though, that at one point I'd gone into my hyper-focus mode because I didn't watch the queue for new cases, wasn't aware of anything going on around me, etc. This can be good when you're working on something but not when it's a side project that will help with work but keeps you from doing work...

I hadn't gone into a hyper-focus zone in awhile and it was kind of an "out-of-body" experience to suddenly realize I was doing that and almost wake up, in a sense. Anyways, I was wondering if this ever happens to anyone else. I'm pretty sure @scottalanmiller knows exactly what I'm talking about...lol

The "internet", aka "cyberspace" was something you read about it Popular Science.....

Popular Science was the one that constantly called it the "Information Superhighway". OMG I can't believe that kids today have never heard that term. It was so common back then.

What are you talking about?! I know that term quite well!

I worked in a high school for a bit... In passing I mentioned the information super highway to a group of 8th graders during a lab period... they all looked at me with dumbfound expressions... I had to clarify that I was talking about the internet.

Am I the only one my age who knows that term?!

      Likely.

I remember hearing that term all the time in the 90s. Very common expression.

The thing that people always seem to forget. Colleges are a business they are not there to be helpful to you. They are filling their pockets with the crazy fees that people pay to take classes. They are car salesmen.

A major university in the Washington, D.C. area, when questioned as to why they were not providing a value to their students, stated that students are not the customers of a university but are simply their to provide funding for the professors to do other things. Educating the students was not their job nor did they care. The students were simply a revenue source for research.

Read: they felt, quite rightly, that any student at their university was a sucker and deserved to be taken advantage of.
