I've had my surface pro3 for about a week now and I have to say it is one of my favorite devices I've ever had. I'm coming from a 2012 MacBook air and at first I thought that it might be hard to make the switch but I have to say I'm glad I did. So if you are thinking of making the switch to a SP3 I would recommend going for it.

I have to say that I am loving mine. Every desktop game I've thrown at it plays well enough for my time and lifestyle...the new 3:2 ratio is fantastic for reading in portrait mode...it is fast, stable and just the perfect device. Of course, I used to say that about the original Surface Pro's but this is Surface Pro done RIGHT. Just wondering what the future of MODERN apps will be like.

Agreed...horrible search algorithm and the layout is bad. Sometimes I'll search the exact name and I have to scroll over several pages to find that app.

It makes me give up. There is no way to reliably find an app you know about on Metro or the Windows Phone. And if you are looking for one you don't know by name you are screwed.

Probably comes from using Bing no matter how badly it works. Microsoft ties good products to broken ones making everything worse.

I had to stop using the Windows phone. It was useless.

I usually find the best apps for Windows Phone and Windows 8 via links from Windows Phone Central. Great site...sad that I need them to do the searching for me...

I don't feel like they are going to abandon Metro. They've invested too much. But the new CEO does have the "blame Balmer" card to play and might do it.

I would be in total shock if they abandoned the Metro UI. Windows 8 was ugly and needed some serious refinement at its release. With the latest updates Windows 8.1 is fluid, responsive, and much easier to navigate.

Windows 8.1 can do something that neither Android or iOS can do. It can run real applications and is not dependent on an app store like its competitors. Which is great for the consumer, but Microsoft would rather control purchases through the Windows Store since that is how the maximum amount of revenue is made. Either way, Microsoft will take what it can get. As we saw with the RT and many failed Windows phone versions, your device is only as good as the applications that can run on it.

I've also got a Windows Phone (8.1 too) and the new and useful apps just keep coming. There isn't much of an app gap now unless you consider "local" apps like banks, TV-Stations, etc.

And it took time but I've gotten over the schizophrenic side of Windows 8x and embraced the hybrid quality of it.

RT was good in concept but it did live and die by the "App Store" which still needs a lot more useful apps...I find myself using the desktop on my Surface Pro 3 more than anything...the best Modern app to me...The "Modern" Internet Explorer...

      In response to this article:

      http://www.wpcentral.com/new-rumors-windows-threshold-could-please-desktop-pc-users#comment-form

I am wondering just where Windows is heading? Did everyone beyond Steven Sinofsky hate Metro/Modern on the desktop?

I for one actually like Windows 8.1, both on the desktop and Surface Pro 3. Yes, it can seem schizophrenic but I am really liking it more and more and it is pretty darn stable for me.

I wonder if they are going to abandon Modern for desktops and perhaps make RT the only "mobile" version or the rumored Windows Phone/RT merge...

In a way I am glad I am not the only one who had this problem. On the flip side, it doesn't mess up Windows 8.1 start screen. 🙂 I will look into Fences...

    • Remote Desktop and Desktop Shortcuts

It seems like I've been searching for this problem for years and can never find a solution. I have users who VPN and Remote Desktop into their PC's and often times, they come back to the office and all of their shortcuts are moved around, usually grouped on one side. The common thing I see is that they usually have different kinds of screen resolution between the desktop here and their home PC.

I've tried various things and third party solution and can't seem to find a common fix. Any suggestions?

      Thanks...

@scottalanmiller It is a one trick pony and apparently it was made to be bad...a lot of graphic mess ups...fun to blow things up now and then. Had to turn off explicit content for my daughter as it had some strange adult humor in it...

Loved? I still have mine and it still works 🙂

Sadly (or perhaps not), since Emulation became so good, I pretty got rid of all my classic computing stuff sans my Atari 2600 and an Amiga 500 with tons of my floppies.

      Haven't seen that in decades.

It has a charm to it...Robert Altman always had a kind of "turn the camera on and just act" kind of style...it is quite evident in this movie but it works...the plot isn't anything to remember but the songs are fun...this is my daughter's favorite song from the movie..

In general the whole process has made me realize I have a degree, 6-8 years in the IT world, and basically running a shop by my self this whole time, and 0 certifications. At the end of the day when you have been doing things not the right way, but the way that works for this long, it is hard to step up into a bigger team role with out being able to show on paper that you are serious or know anything. So I'm going to keep working on development during the day, and get off my ass and try to get my CCNA by night. (Own the books, done the studying, never took the test) Then have Scott move me to east coast to work at NTG, drink beer, and fade into the sunset.

I know how you feel. I went from Retail Sales to Retail Store Management in record time but wanted a career change to IT. Got in with ALLTEL in customer services and pushed myself to get to their help desk with only self-taught experience dating back to 81 and my Vic-20. From there, worked my way up to lead and then finally supervisor. Layoff hits and then I land a job with the State of Arkansas as Systems Analyst (contracted) for 5 years. The job was a 5 year contract but eventually my duties became less and less and honestly, my work was done in the first 5 minutes of the day. So, I spend the rest of the day learning. Eventually got my A+ certifrication. I had a good friend at a large Medical School / Hospital who got me in and I basically leaped over 3-4 job grades to land right in the middle of Storage Management and Disaster Recovery. I had never racked a server, setup a server, messed with AD, or even knew much about what I was getting into. I did learn a lot there but my manager and the guy who was there before me basically did all the work as I watched, so I didn't feel challenged. I had a job open up in the town I lived in as the solo IT guy...interviewed and landed the job and I've been here ever sense. I have to do everything and all things IT. It has been a growing experience and I have leaned a lot on "Google Searches', MangoLassi friends and other sources. And I am learning. I have a plotter sized print out of Microsoft's Certification Roadmap on my wall. Being we use anything and everything Excel, I am starting with my MOS and going from there. I like to learn but TIME is my enemy. I'm an active Dad, husband, assistant Children's Pastor and oncall 24/7, so I can say I have ZERO certifications. Time Management for studies is quite tough and though I've given up a lot of things, I feel I can give up more to have more time to study.
