Windows Storage Server 2012 - Can I Install One, Solitary Program?
Looking for a low cost PC/Server/Storage solution to run IP Camera Software...I already have a very robust Seagate Business Storage NAS running Windows Storage Server 2012. Having just gone through a Microsoft Self-Audit, I am already doubting I can get another one of these and load the IP Camera software suite on it, right? Not so much the CPU but the licensing...It will cost about $700-$800 more to build a tower server with Windows 2012 R2 but then I get the benefit of virtualization too...just looking for cost cutting ideas...
Thanks...

Best Development Solution For a Development Apprentice Like Myself
After almost 4 years as IT Director and SOLO IT guy, the time for me to dig in to development has come. I've gotten this place as upgraded and stable as I can and nothing much left but day to day issues and plenty of time for development.
I've dabbled in Visual Basic .Net for years but never, truly developed anything useful for production.
I came to my current job in March of 2011. Place was so bad, from an admin/server stance and especially on backups, which took 3 days to backup one day of data. But that's another story.
This place is made up of Excel spreadsheets, Excel spreadsheets and more Excel spreadsheets, most of them with Macros and heavy, messy VBA code. It has been a struggle enough to know what the coders meant when they wrote these things. And I've come to realize that VBA is my friend because off all off the customization options we have for our business. I don't think VBA will be going anywhere else any time soon at my workplace.
The main, business critical spreadsheets are for quoting and contracting metal building sales...it imports raw, text data from a very complicated metal building suite called MBS. It combines the data from the initial design template, provides a quote and also makes a contract...it then heads to engineering and finally drafting for production. The drafting spreadsheet handles a ton of calculations and then we export that data into a CSV for the machines to import and cut to specification...it is quite complex...and I do not plan on changing that any time soon.
But, I have a vision...since we have so much data scattered about, I have envisioned an internal customer portal, a web based app where people in the company can go, enter a customers info and locate information that is stored on these spreadsheets...obviously, I know it would be good to make at least an Access back end, if not SQL...one of these does cross references SQL...
At my disposal, I have Office 2013, Access and a SQL Server. We also have SharePoint Online. I've also completed a few Software Development Classes on MVA and I've gone through a lot of Lynda.com Excel classes that have been helpful...
I have used LightSwitch in the past but with Silverlight perhaps being a thing of the past, it was best to steer clear of it in the future.
I've had advice here and there in these forums but it is time to finally see what some may suggest the best route to go. I've decided to work on this customer portal first as a way to lean a new language (say ASP.NET or a durative) as I also learn what makes up these other spreadsheets and learn how to gather data from them and collaborate the data. Then perhaps one day in the future, work on getting off Excel, if possible, on many of these projects.

RE: Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is finally here!
I'm enjoying my finally released DENIM for my ICON I received yesterday. Love the HEY CORTANA and the already awesome camera is even better now.
Plus, the ICON wasn't one of the few that got to receive the 10 preview yet...which is fine by me...Windows 8.1.1. rocks so far...

One does not get what one does not ask for. After 220 days I'd be losing my shit if it wasn't sold and no one was living in it. YMMV.
We will ask then but lower so get in up to 229.
The driveway still bothers me...LOL

Rooms In ALL Windows Phone Versions Are Going Away
This affects just a few of us ML users but I am sad to see this go...not sure of an easier way so sync calendars between my wife and I.
Starting in March 2015, Rooms on Windows Phone will no longer be supported. You'll still be able to view and use your room photo albums, calendars, and notes.
The changes to Rooms will take place in two stages.
In Windows Phone 8 and 8.1
After support for Rooms ends in March 2015, you'll still see your existing rooms on your Windows Phone 8 or 8.1. You'll be able to view and use your room photo albums, calendars, and notes on your phone. But you won't be able to create new rooms or make membership or permissions changes to existing rooms. Additionally, you and other room members won't be able to send any new room chat messages. In Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones
We're making way for new features in Windows 10 that will help you stay in touch with the people that matter most. Once you update to Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, rooms will no longer show up on your phone. You'll still be able to get to your photo albums, calendars, and notes, either on the Web or by using other apps on your phone. You won't be able to see your chat history or send or receive any new chats.Note: If you have important info in your room chats that you want to keep, you should save a copy somewhere else before updating your phone beyond Windows Phone 8.1.
To see room content using apps on your phone:
Photos – You'll find your photos and videos in the OneDrive app in a folder with same name as the room.
Calendar – Go to the Calendar app to see your room calendar.
Notes – Your room notes are in the OneNote app, in a notebook with the same name as the room.To see room content on the Web:
Sign in to Outlook.com with the same Microsoft account you use on your phone. You'll find your content there, in folders with the same name as your room.
Or just use these direct links to get to your: Photos
Calendar
NotesYou can continue to see everything from rooms (except for chats) on Outlook.com, in the Outlook app, and on windowsphone.com.
For more info, take a look at the Rooms FAQ.Thanks,

The driveway still bothers me...
Dude, turkey bowling in the winter! Aim for your neighbours garbage cans.
Get a big ass bag of rock salt after you're done bowling and dump 80% at the top. It'll melt and slide down the driveway.
Believe me, we've considered that...we do get more ice than snow here in Arkansas. Even if we parked cars on the street before a winter storm, we would have to slide to our cars.
IF we got this home, we would consider putting in stairs from curb to driveway with a rail...

High CPU on Hyper-V VM
Any clues as to the cause of constant, high CPU usage on a Hyper-V VM?
We have a 2012 R2 Host with 3 VM's running. The one in question is our main file server which also hosts our Anti-Virus Suite, Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition.
I've had this happen two Friday in two weeks. Both times, we had a PENDING Windows Update. (pending as in it lets me know there is an update to be downloaded but it does not download it for me until I do so myself)
The Services that grab the high CPU are...
SYSTEM
TASK MANAGER
Service Host Local System (Network Restricted) (8)
And under that are:Distributed Link Tracking Client
Hyper-V Data Exchange Service
Hyper-V Guest Shutdown Service
Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor
Network Connections
Remote Desktop Services User Port Redirector
Smart Card Device Enumeration Service3
User Access Logging ServiceHowever, it is usually SYSTEM that grabs most of it...
Our Hyper-V system has run almost perfectly since went live late last March. The only common occurance was the notice that Windows Updates were available.
I have also given good thought to move our Anti-Virus suite to another VM on our second Hyper-V host. But since it really has had no problems until now, not sure if that is the fix.
There is no viruses or spyware on the file server. Nothing in the logs on both the VM or host that indicate any problems.
My goal is to prevent this from happening again as both times required production time reboots and the dang VM too forever to shutdown. It was THAT slow.
Any clues? It currently has 8GB of RAM and 2 virtual processors thrown at it.

Looks like you get a lot for your money. I reckon that would be at least twice the price over here.
I'd want to flatten the bottom of the driveway and park a couple of cars down there, then grass over the top of the driveway, and put steps up to the house. Or do you need to park the car in the garage? As it stands, the driveway looks pretty ugly and weirdly shaped. Very pretty house though.
Yeah, if we get our low offer accepted, we will save up to eventually do some work on the driveway...for sure, snow/ice days, we will park in the street. If we don't have steps by then, we'll sled to our cars!
Why install steps? Sledding seems like so much more fun!
For real eh? Still waiting on the offer...contract said for builder to respond today. Pretty much expecting a counter for sure but had to start low.

I only suggest removing the AV as a test to see if the utilization goes down.
After that, if it did, I would definitely look to another product... or getting with Symantec support to find the problem.
Symantec said I have the option for cloud hosted A/V under our license...may move to that as a temporary solution...
