I want to do IT, which was the reason I applied for the position based on the responsibilities listed.

A little more details, this company originally had all their IT outsourced. They hired an IT director (my direct report) about 14 months ago, and a senior network engineer 11 months ago. Seems they are looking at bringing all those services in-house, if the costs make sense. I look at it like possibly being an opportunity where I can implement something in their environment. And if worse case, and I'm just consumed with Benchwork, I'll just leave and find another job. 20K is a big jump, especially with the raise of inflation, and providing for a family.

I just received an offer yesterday evening, and have all weekend to think about it. Not sure if this should be a new post, but it's definitely related, and wanted some feedback from the community.

Currently work at an MSP as support engineer, and have been here a year. Gained lots of experience with different technology, including getting my feet wet with some azure ad stuff. I received offer for a growing logistics company as a network admin. However, I will mostly be racking and stacking at the new facilities the company is buying so it will require travel across the country every other month, depending how fast these new facilities are bought out. Their offering me a guarantee 85K with 10 percent annual bonus. At my current job, I'm getting guaranteed 65K with quarterly incentives, which make it close to 70K.

Pros: 20K more than what I'm getting now. Will be my first time employed with an internal IT team vs msp team. It's a fast growing company, so may have some opportunities to implement some stuff in their environment.

Cons: Lots of their infrastructure is managed by various 3rd parties such as msp. Seems like I would be a "rack monkey" as my friend describes it even though my job title is "network admin". Would be away from my family every once in awhile for weeks at a time. Also a pro for me because I'll be visiting new states I haven't been to.

FYI: I will ask my current employer if they would counter, which I highly doubt they will. Also I have another interview lined up Monday with another company, which will require no travel. So I've got some options, and negotiations to do this coming week.

I'm seeking for an in-house system admin role (windows /vmware/hyper-v/azure environments). A position where I can gain knowledge from senior admins, and where I can gain experience in projects/implementations/planning/etc. I've been working for managed services, and kind of burnt out, and wanting to explore something new/different. Or something like a Projects Engineer position. Something where I can strategically plan/research, and implement.

No shame in interviewing to gain personal experience with it. It's something good to consistently do in your career. I do it sometimes even if my interest in job is virtually zero. It helps when you have an interview that is very important and you want to nail.

Very true. I didn't realize how much experience I gained this past year at my current position, until I started to reflect and notate on a word document in preparation. Unfortunately, he didn't ask me anything regarding real live situations (and I have quite a few), or problems that I was involved with, where I overcame and resolved the issue. But I did get my feet wet again in the interviewing process, and he probably helped me more than he realized. Time to move on now, and search for that right opportunity for 2022!!

Turns out, he would be the person I would report directly to. Interview was very dry to begin with. He asked me some Azure questions, which I have a base knowledge/ experience with, but I think he wants in depth advanced knowledge, which should have been listed in job description imo. Even when we were almost hitting the 30min mark, he said he had a 1:30 appointment he had to meet, and if I had any more questions to let him know. I don’t expect to receive an offer. Lol.

@irj Don't you think it's odd that the interview is planned for 30min with the IT director? I would think at least an hour. Unless he'll be able to determine candidates that quickly?

So if I have to ask the question, "Is this a fake job"? I would think it most likely is fake.

Here's the situation. I applied for a position that was posted on staffing website. Recruiter reached out, gave me details about position, that it's direct hire, full time with a company. Prior to my interview with the company's HR, I found a position with msp, with almost identical job duties. However, the position I'm interviewing for is system admin, and job duties seem like msp related. HR interview went well, and now I'm scheduled to interview with the IT director. However, I'm only scheduled to interview for 30min, which is very odd. Background on this position, it's a growing company, and they currently have an msp already, and the IT director was just recently hired a month ago. So maybe their wanting to move everything in-house? It just makes me wonder if this is legitimate or not. I did have the HR person send me the brochure of their company benefits.

WordPress breach Go Daddy

GoDaddy's chief information security officer (CISO) Demetrius Comes said they've discovered unauthorized access to its managed WordPress servers. To be exact the breach opened information on 1.2 million active and inactive managed WordPress customers since September 6, 2021.

@scottalanmiller I understand what you mean by not getting advice from vendors. However, maybe there's some "good" information that would go into details concerning best practices when connected switches together. For instance, I've seen your posts where you said you learned some good concepts while studying for the mcsa back in the 90's.

I think I've grasped the concept here though. You have a core switch, where you plug in your other switches, which those switches will have hosts connected together. Jared put a good example of what good practices should look like. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? LOL

Is there an article or blog that I can read up on concerning best practices when connecting routers/switches/etc together? Maybe read what Cisco recommends?

Is there a need for all the switches? I thought that you were reducing by one?

The one I reduced was the EdgeSwitch Lite, because it didn't have POE capability.

The core switch connects to the router. The edge switches connect to the core switch. Your devices connect to the edge switches.

This is how it's currently connected: Router------>Meraki SW------------>Adtran SW

What do you mean by putting the Edgeswitch at the core?

Recently, I did some IT closet clean up for a client of ours. They have a Meraki switch they were not utlizing (several ports available), an Edge switch lite (no poe capability), and an Adtran switch, which where most of their devices plugged into. And a Meraki router.

They also have 2 hypervisors, and another server used for BDR.

No vlans. All 1 subnet with no more than 100 devices on lan.

I removed the Edge switch since they were also migrating to Microsoft Voice, and getting new phones that would require poe. (this post is not to discuss Microsoft Voice).

I connected as much as I could to the meraki switch, starting with the servers. I then connected everything else to the Adtran switch. I connected the Adtran and Meraki switch together with 1 ethernet cable. And the Meraki switch I have 1 ethernet cable going into the Meraki Firewall.

Should have I instead, connected the Adtran switch to the router instead of the Meraki switch? What would be the best way to connect all these devices together?

Cable Management Best Practice

I've been tasked with re-organizing this clients IT closet, which also means the cabling. It's a pretty big mess.

I would like to know what is the best practice on how to perform this tasks? Perhaps, steps in order to make sure it gets done properly. Items needed to do the job would help too. For example, I know I will need Velcro. I have some straps with me, but most likely not enough.

Looks like all I needed to do was mount the hard drive.

Mounted, and transferred the data over the network via smb://windows share

Was some additional steps than what I did previously, but it worked like a charm.

I just wanted to make sure I don’t risk altering the data. Makes sense that mounting and unmounting the drive should not cause a problem.

I know in the past, I literally just copied and paste from Ubuntu Files, which it basically mounted on it’s own. That was several years ago, and pc was windows 7, and probably on a hard disk drive. This pc has an nvme drive, not sure if that matters.
