      I too, not an expert, more like playing with salt and you seem like you know more about it than me, but this one liner helps me when I feel something is cached in the setting, or command fails cause its already running:

      salt '*' saltutil.kill_all_jobs && salt-run cache.clear_all && salt '*' saltutil.clear_cache && salt '*' saltutil.sync_all

      I've been choosing MSI more and more.

      My MSI
      FM2-A85XA-G43
      has lasted for quite some time now, I reckon I got this at 2013-2014, and constant daily use, and it is pretty neat, no sign of issues and even if I sell this PC I still think it will last a few more years without any issues.

      The thing with MSI though, is that I wish there audio component in the motherboard were better.

      @BBigford

      I was eyeing this mobo:
      https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132964

      cause its available in my local shop, but just look at the reviews:

      Failure after 3 months...
      Don't walk .. Run Away ....
      Terrible board

      That mobo should be perfect, good Intel NiC + good Realtek Audio + Good Price,
      but look at those angry reviews, many of them seems legit. I checked Many newegg Ryzen motherboards, none have the same hate, for example AMD Ryzen 5 1600 have 0 bad reviews, and Biostar Mini ITX reviews has reltaively good reviews:

      https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138452

      Very strange that Asus mobos are doing that.

    • RE: preferred UPS for desktop computer

      @Mike-Davis

      I have this guy from LINKCOMN for my main home PC
      http://www.linkcomn.com/chanpin_a/productId=125.html

      Cause i heard SSD might fail due to power outage more than wearing it down, and my home used to have electricity issue.

      Its nice and I feel the company is related to TP-Link for some reason, the unit is good and is working fine (saved the PC 4 times now). The only issue is that I dont have the USB version with the software for the PC and every time I turn it on there is 3 second siren that is annoying and loud, thus it stops me from opening the PC late at night if the UPS was off. Otherwise the whole house will wake up.

      And yes I am one of the guys that shuts down the UPS at night when I dont need it anymore.

      @KOOLER

      To be honest you sound right, cause I have another device and its running Linux custom OS and provides SMB 3.0/2.0 support via SAMBA and it does function but it has its weird moments so I have to rely on custom script for users on Windows 7 and upward to mount password protected network shares, which does not work if the users did it via the GUI of map network drive, regardless what setting I play with from the user side or the NAS side.

      Hmm it seems it is always better to follow the open approach and have the benefit of re-purposing or run any other Operating System.

    • Should I build it myself (iSCSI Storage) or use AS5008T ?

      Hello,

      I have this product in my country, selling for 1000$ which due to my country have high taxes.

      It supports the following:

      Windows + Mac + Linux cross-platform file sharing
      A multimedia hub for your photos, music and movies
      Your complete backup solution
      Support for RAID 0,1,5,6,10 and hard drive hot swapping
      Equipped with 4 Ethernet ports that support failover and link aggregation
      SMB 2/3 support increases Windows networking performance by 30%-50%

      And while i am looking at its features and and even Vmware certifications for NFS I am pleasantly encouraged to by this product for my company. bu I cant help but wonder what stuff like SAM-SD does, I mean why cant I use a full fledged OS and good motherboard and fill it up with the same WD RED NAS HDD and create RAID 10 , and have the benefit of full fledged OS. I am certain Centos 7 can do this, Wondering what are your thoughts cause I reckon it would be alot cheaper for 1000$to get motherboard + CPU + case + Ram and it should do more and beyond than this device with its crammed linux, and my device can be updated faster and easier. Wondering what are the risks, or it all depends on how competent you're in doing this, if your competent enough going your own path and making your own server is better, right ?

      Sorry for any typos writing this with the monitor turned off, due to recent Epi-LASIK

    • SaltStack Windows clients remote control shadowing using VNC

      Hello,

      Another SS guide how to show you how to use SaltStack + UltraVNC to remotely connect to user machines and solve their issues if the need arises to remotely login.

      So 1st step is to download Ultra VNC (for compatibility use x32 build) and make it portable and configure it to your liking (ports/password/..etc), as long as it saves to an ini file, which the latest version does by default 1.2.1.3 after you launch it for the first time you will see the .ini file.

      Now that you have folder (let us call it "RS") of ultravnc that contains winvnc.exe + configuration file, we will need to send it to the client that requires remote shadowing, thus upload that folder to your salt master /srv/salt directory then run:

      salt '188' cp.get_dir salt://RS/ C:/
      This above will move the folder to the client.

      Then you will need to install ultravnc as service to bypass UAC prompts:
      salt '188' cmd.run '"C:\RS\winvnc" -install'
      then
      salt '188' cmd.run '"C:\RS\winvnc" -startservice'

      Now get the IP of the client and login remotely, (it is recommend that you setup password + change default port + also you can use an SSL plugin for extra security all in the configuration step prior).

      You can get the IP of the minion via:
      salt '188' network.ip_addrs

      Then on your Windows or Linux Machine, use VNC viewer to remote connect to that client.

      When you finish, you can clean up via numerous ways:

      salt '188' cmd.run '"C:\RS\winvnc" -stopservice'
      and/or
      salt '188' cmd.run '"C:\RS\winvnc" -uninstall'

      This works in LAN enviroment ofcourse, but if you want to make it work in WAN you can as well, via UltraVNC repeater, also there is another solution that rivals team viewer but it is not Open Source but free is Anydesk and quick look at its command line interface shows that you can do the same using it:

      @msff-amman-Itofficer Do you have one administrator username and password across all computers?

      have you tried changing the ID setting on the minion? I don't believe that that will rename it on the server after being joined, but it is where you would start.

      I know I can change it from the minion side, but I wondered if it can be done from the master side

      This is located at the minion side not master side

    • SaltStack rename minion ?

      Hi,

      So SaltStack question, how can I rename minion ID after it got registered on the salt master ? I dont think that is possible or is it ?

      For example I have minion with ID 172, and I want to rename it, without uninstalling it from the minion machine and the re-installing with the correct ID, lets say 175. So can this be done remotely from the Master ?

      And dont expect fancy things with opensource and free stuff,

      Why not? Open source is almost always way fancier. Just look at office suites, desktops and other big ticket items. Open source has decades of being in the lead in those areas - as far as fancy look and feel.

      Just take comparison UI between LibreOffice vs MS Office 2013
      Sure Libre might do better in functionality, but in looks it is not fancy
