Curious about the on-prem requirement? Seems lime an odd requirement?

On-prem because we have a lot of PII information that gets put into our help desks, plus we just like having some control over things. Not everything has to be cloud hosted.

Oh I see. I didn't realize it would be set up for the general public to have read access if it were cloud hosted.

I suppose all these multi-billion dollar enterprises using hosted services like Service Now have no idea!

Not quite a full on JB explosion there....

But you're not wrong. The fear of cloud based solutions (not real cloud - just other people's servers) is overblown, etc. Do you need to do your due diligence and make sure that any vendor you pick is up to snuff - sure.. but you should do the same for self hosted stuff too.

    • RE: Subnetting help

In fact they are... you have to break it into the two sections.

      63 is really 00 111111
      127 is really 01 111111
      191 is really 10 111111

The first two places of the last octet are not part of the device address, they are part of the network address. You can't really look at the base 10 value, that's what leads to the confusion. Remember, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.192 in CIDR notation this is a /26 (192.168.1.0/26). So the first 26 bits are part of the network, and the last 6 are the device address.

@Dashrender Ah, so in the future I need to pay more attention to the /26 part (which they did not notate here), but would have been implied had I known what I was doing prior to reading it.

Yes, 255.255.255.192 is the same as /26.

      each 255 = 8 so 8 + 8 + 8 + 2 (192 = 11000000, and you only include the 1's, and you start from the left) = 26

say what? you're going to hire an electrician? meh, I'd cut my own holes, behind the tv and one next to the power below, then run the cables down the inside of the wall, out the lower hole and connected to the outlets.. at least that's the cheap way I could do it..

I've also run my own power/cable extensions all inside the wall...

    • RE: One man IT shop looking for additional help options when needed. Hire a MSP?

An MSP might not be what you want, but an ITSP (IT Service Provider) should definitely cover the bill.

Jared at Bundy and Assoc, and Scott at NTG are both ITSP. They can do as much or as little as you want. The one thing they have the hardest time providing is local hands. Of course it's not impossible, just more challenging (I've seen Scott post "looking for local hands in ABC location" several times).

An ITSP should have no problems working within your environment, helping to support your gear and your choices. Documentation is king.

Of course having time before hand to bring them up to speed on your setup is very helpful (you pay a few hours worth to train them on your setup) and go from there.

Do you have a source of this claim? Because abandoning free Hyper-V server is not the same as killing Hyper-V. Server role is still there.

meh - same ultimate difference. sure the role is still there, but that's not what nearly anyone should be using.

    • RE: Home business ideas for transition out of 9-5?

@guyinpv Are you planning on offering any pure consulting? If the client is paying for a recommendation, or as Scott said, several options - would you be OK with offering a solution where the client paid you for an opinion while also being paid by the vendor for a product that is in your recommendation?
Make the assumption that you will not be doing the install.

If a customer found out after the fact that you could get paid by the vendor of one of your recommendations to them, do you think they would be OK with that?

Here's a situation - you hire me to design a server solution for you, I give you a recommendation to buy Dell. Then you find out down the road that Dell paid me because you ended up buying that Dell, would you be happy about that? Would you honestly think that the fact that there was a chance that Dell would pay me played no part in my recommending Dell to you?

I, personally, do not think I understand what a true consultant delivers. I mean, if I go and ask for a server, correct, how many different types of servers are there?

You do not hire a consultant if you know you need a server. you go to the vendor or VAR.

You go to a consultant to determine the best server for your needs.

But that is the point I think @guyinpv is trying to make.

His customers come to HIM and say "I want a server". They trust him to pick the best solution for them.

If it was ME, I'd ask a ton questions first ... do you really need a server? being the first.

For the love of god - WHY? why are you asking that? He told you he wanted a server, so sell him a server. He didn't come to you and say - hey, I have a problem and I think a server will solve it, but I want to make sure.. can you help me? he just asked for a server.
Why do his job for him for free?

For example (and keep in mind this is NOT my line of work, doing this sort of stuff) a non-profit comes to me recently, with 3 users, and really, really says they need a server. I immediately explain why they don't need one. And I've been arguing back and forth with them on it. They are adamant they need one.

And have you seen a dime for that time you've spent? nope. but if you would have just sold them a server, you would have money in your pocket and maybe a support contact out of it.

Sorry if I end up with more questions each time there is a discussion and it pushes the topic away from the OP. But it's the reality of a discussion.

But perhaps the point of this post wasn't a discussion, but only wanting to post a job thread.

That said, Scott's right, HR could learn a lot from the feedback in the thread in regards to what kind of people read these postings on these types of boards and what they may or may not bother responding to.

I always thought that if there is a lockout after 4-5 wrong passwords, dictionary attacks don't really matter. Opinions?

You're correct until someone takes, say, your iPhone and brute forces it offline. Substitute iPhone for laptop, or whatever other portable data container you like.

Dictionary / rainbow tables are super powerful on static data. If you have a chance to play with them I highly recommend it. At one point I had 20GB of rainbow tables and they were soooooo sweet haha.

If a device were stolen I would remote wipe though, right?

Absolutely! Once the luser finally gave up looking for it and confessed. That's anywhere from an hour to several days where I can take your device offline (disabling your remote wipe) and then it's just a count down to pwnage.

Obviously in the case of MDM managed devices, hopefully you have some kind of limited number of tries before the device self wipes.

Microsoft does not say MSSE is bad. They say it's a baseline that all other AV's should shoot to be better than. !=bad.

I know you don't like it @ajstringham but I do. The only reason I've moved away from it for other options (namely Webroot) is because I like the journaling feature webroot has.

There is a decrapifier script that someone posted on ML that I use for both deployment and non-deployment scenarios.

In the case of non-deployment, You need to run this script as the first user on the system, preferably an account that won't actually be used.

@scottalanmiller I understand that I will be 25, but the thing is while I want to learn and want to get better. And you are right schools are a little behind the time. And while I can figure things out my brain doesn't work like the rest of yalls. I don't learn like everyone else. Sometimes I just have to have things explained to me a certain way or it just goes right over my head and if I was all by myself I would probably be lost. For example I had a calc class where the professor was decent but I just wasn't understanding what he was saying so i went through like 8 professors that put their lectures on youtube till I found one that made sense to me. I have a pretty bad strain of ADD, because of it i have very bad short term memory and so like I said it helps when I am able to walk up to someone and ask questions.

That is the best part. Forums like ML are great and providing many people perspective on a given topic/issue.

If you don't understand what you're reading in a book, create a post - see what kind of responses you get.

Also, don't limit yourself to just one forum. Branch out. Be uncomfortable. This is kinda a must. If you're comfortable, you're probably not learning.

You can build your own VMWare server using the free version for testing. You can get trial versions of Windows 2012 R2 for building test VMs. If you have an extra PC (needs to be newer) there's a good chance ESXi will install on it for testing purposes.

Veeam has a 30 day trial option that you could install on your workstation to backup your VMs and learn how it works.

Exactly - they have a list of demands and have already told you they plan to pay you $40K for it. Why would you think they would pay you more? and again, if they did, why wouldn't you think they are upset about having to pay more and will always hold it over you.

Assuming they would be willing to pay 80K for example, they should list it as $40-80K depending on experience. Then you can walk in knowing you can probably get more than that min $40K.
