    • RE: People Fear Change More Than They Actually Hate the Change - SAMIT

Yeah, time is a big problem with dealing with change. I work in the Microsoft SaaS ERP space and Microsoft release a new version every month and they're constantly changing things and sometimes it feels like a full time job just to keep up with it all. I can lose 15 minutes just trying to find something after they've moved the menus around.

Sometimes I just think "slow down, I can't keep up".

    • RE: SMB vs Enterprise

I've worked for both and haven't really noticed a difference. An enterpirse is generally broken up into much smaller semi-autonomous units that often operate similar to an SMB anyway.

Generally the biggest influence is your boss. If your boss is an asshole, it doesn't matter so much if he's an enterprise asshole or an SMB asshole.

    • RE: Win10 Upgrade Icon on Domain Machines

How many companies have domain admins AND don't use WSUS/SCCM?

We can't upgrade because we have client software that doesn't work in Windows 10. I didn't know we were in the vast minority of places. But I don't particularly see a massive rush to migrate. Most of my users don't want to migrate though, and even if they did, I'm pretty immune to their hounding by now, anyway πŸ™‚

You seem to think that if you don’t own your own computer you can’t learn, or develop, or write, or research, or be passionate? I do all of these things on my work laptop.

They are. They're specialist shelf stackers. They'll be much better than you at stacking shelves because of their practice and experience. Their rate of dropping cans of beans will be much better than yours.

Sure, but "works" and "supported" are not the same thing.

We just need a Netflix or Spotify for journalism. Pay $10 a month and get access to the NY Times, Guardian, Rolling Stone, Time and hundreds of other websites. The newspapers/mags get $0.005 per page view.

So that's a great example of things I worry about with my team. If the team only really knows one thing here are a few business risks...

Your business risks are all valid, but this is why when I was running an internal IT department I would encourage my team to learn and explore other potential technologies. If we were running SQL Server, look into other databases. If the servers are all Windows, put a Linux sandbox in. This was all part of learning and developing the team, and keeping their passion for IT. Never stand still.

But the key point here is that this was all part of their job. Learning other technologies was part of their job, for precisely the reason you've mentioned - risk management. And all that learning was done on their work laptops.

@scottalanmiller said in Why Do Recruiters Never Get Involved in Forums Like This:

I've invited many recruiters to this and other forums, and none ever show up or decide to participate, even though the arena is absolutely perfect for them. What better way to find, engage, and validate potential candidates; and how better could you achieve visibility for a job posting?

Why? As far as I can tell, ML has about 20 regular posters, half of whom run their own business, and most live in Texas. The probability of an average recruiter justifying time spent on here seems negligible.

Recruiters seem to actively despise transparency, vetting, or even good placement. Why?

SAM logic: I think X. Therefore anyone who doesn't agree therefore must be somehow corrupt, stupid, incompetent or evil.

There are ways to triggle it but no way to force it.

As far as I was aware you can use webmaster tools to request a crawler visit, which you'd normally do if you've done a lot of changes, but not to request it visits every 5 minutes forever. Pretty sure Spiceworks is constantly crawled because it is a massively popular site.

@scottalanmiller said in SAMIT: Should You Provide Equipment for Work from Home Staff?:

My main point is that people should have laptops of their own when being hired.

Yeah, it's a minor point and my replies are minor, but we've dragged it on for a week without getting anywhere 😊

Like I said, I've never owned a laptop in my working life. But I've also been lucky in that I've never been unemployed, so always had a laptop. Like many IT people, my laptop is almost like a fifth limb, an extension of my body, something I carry around like a child's comfort blanket, something that brings me out in cold sweats if it ever stops working. It's the most important inanimate object in my life, the first thing I pack when going on holiday (I'm sounding quite sad now).

But, but, but. I simply don't see the need for two laptops in my life. If I didn't have a work laptop, like say, I was unemployed, then of course, I would have my own. But that's never happened. I just don't see the benefit of having two devices in my house and I don't understand what you think I could do differently if I had two devices. What is it I can't do on just one device?

    • RE: Preparing to land that dream job

@RandyBlevins said in Preparing to land that dream job:

How do you prep for that dream job? How many interviews do you do for practice, how hard do you look? Do you let it come to you?

No prep and I've never done a practice interview. But I don't know what my dream job looks like. What is yours? Same as your current job but with a 40% higher salary. Is that realistic?

I guess it's a bit like finding love, with your "dream job" being like love at first sight. How common is it for someone to know they will marry someone based purely on a first date? And did they practice for that date?

My point being, you don't always know what your dream job is until you've been working there for a while and realise how happy you are.

There must be a website where everyone can put in their home address and it will work out the best place to host it (eg the minimum total number of air miles required to get everyone there). It's probably somewhere like Bermuda.

I'm going to have "actually, OneDrive is a backup" engraved on my tombstone. If you delete a file locally, or change it, you can restore an earlier version from OneDrive. The backing up is done at Microsoft's end, but it is still backed up.
