@Dashrender said in Boss I want to go to MangoCon....:

Glad I've never worked in a shit whole company like that.

Even the retail companies I've worked for never did crap like that. Every employee received PTO, a minimum of 2 weeks of whatever the average number of hours you work in a week (not sure where that average came from when you've been there less than a year).

Sick time is something that I don't think I've ever had - it's all just PTO, all lumped together, take it how you need it.

My current employer gives three weeks from day one (but it's on an accrual basis, so you don't actually have any PTO on the books until after the first pay period).

...and that is why I'd love to work outside the USA. Common consensus is the average US company is not the greatest to work for in comparison to the average company in the UK or Canada. Never worked outside the US before so I have no opinion on that. I just know I've never been happy with any company I work for.

    • System Center DPM 2012R2 Woes

SCDPM is never going to give me a break. Replica inconsistencies and Recovery Point Failures galore. It'll be fine for a few days then I have to tweak something to get it working again. I have a new one this time... Exchange 2013. We have 3 mailboxes being backed up and 1 is having an issue. This is not a DAG so the eseutil is running against both the logs and databases. DAG is coming Q2 next year. I've copied the ese.dll and eseutil.exe from the Exchange server to the DPM server located in C:...\dpm\bin and is the right version. There are no other Exchange servers being backed up on this box. Two of three databases backup fine. Everything was working until yesterday. The disk allocation has been manually grown, but is set to automatically grow. All services are running fine. I've made sure there are no conflicting backup schedules. I've made sure to install this rollup. I've made sure this C++ redistributable Visio Update is installed. Per the picture, that highlighted updated was said to be problematic and needs uninstalled... Until the highlighted hotfix came out, then it was verified working so no point in uninstalling those just to turn around and install them again.

No paid vacation days? Gooooooooooooooooooooood grief.

Even our interns get vacation days! We don't even pay them!

Lol thanks for the laugh. It made me feel worse, but at least I got a good laugh out of it. 🙂

    • Hyper-V Manager Alternatives

For keeping every Hyper-V server in a single pane of glass, the built in Hyper-V Manager is great. But if you have a 2008 host and 2012 host where we haven't upgraded versions yet, you can't load a 2008 host on a 2012 box and manage it, and vise versa. I've checked around for some free options to fill the gap till the OS is upgraded but have come up empty handed. Is anyone using a free 3rd party for this? We have around a dozen hosts, up around 50 VMs.

      @MattSpeller said in Hours I work/PTO:

@BBigford That's crazy, I can't relate to that at all.

Haha if people thought that the housing market is what bled the economy with foreclosures, it is nothing compared to pharmaceuticals and expensive health care that has staff stretched too thin with mediocre coverage. I got pneumonia in the winter and my 2 inhalers were $320... with insurance! I went with the company that had the best insurance available to me.

This has been a bad year for getting sick. This entire region has been hit with this weird mix of things. It has started out as influenza, which lowers your bodies ability to fight off other things, then a bacterial infection starting in your sinus' because your body can't fight it off. Then at night a post-nasal drip sends it down into your throat and lungs, which turns into an upper respiratory infection. 3 doctors refused to give me any kind of antibiotic because tests came back negative, until they said they tested for the wrong thing about 2 months into it. TWO MONTHS! Then I got inhalers because "antibiotics would be useless at this point". Afterward I tested positive for all sorts of things as well as dozens of other people that week I guess, once they got the right tests administered. Don't get any medicine? Yeah that crap in your lungs eventually turns into pneumonia. Oh, did I mention the cough is so bad you might end up cracking two ribs? That happened as well. I didn't realize how common it is until after the x-rays.

Yeah... top notch health care even if you are paying a fortune. /sarcasm

    • System Center Virtual Machine Manager

So obviously you can install the VMware vSphere local client, or the Hyper-V Manager, on a local workstation. Can you not do the same with System Center Virtual Machine Manager? I have it setup on our System Center server where we also have SCCM and SCOM. I find it hard to believe you wouldn't have the option of a local client of SCVMM where admins can remote out to servers from a single pane of glass, rather than having to go to the SC server, then out to various servers via RDP.

      @scottalanmiller said in Hours I work/PTO:

I've had affluent, well educated New Yorkers who think that Canada is a state or that the northern US border, just two counties away from them, was France. That the average person has little to no grasp of geography should not be a surprise.

I haven't been to the north East, but I've been to the south East. I live in southern Idaho. If you're not aware, the KKK used to have a huge compound in northern Idaho (about 8 hours away). Our state is famous for potatoes... but also tech. Micron is about 5 miles from my house and they're worth a bit of money. We also have an Oracle building and some other tech companies.

Everyone I met in Florida: "Where are you from?"

      Me: "Idaho."

      FL: "Iowa? That's cool."

      Me: "No, Idaho."

      FL: "Oooooh.... OHIO... Got it."

Me: "No! Idaho! The state between Montana and Washington."

FL: "The one with the KKK? Are you all racist then?"

Me: "That was a small radical group in the north... like 20 years ago. No, all of Idaho doesn't share that same view."

FL: "So you're probably a potato farmer then, runs in the family? Idaho Famous Potatoes?"

Me: "We have good potatoes, but we aren't all stupid racist potato farmers. The hell is the matter with you people?"

I was talking to like 6 people in a group (sober), and this was a round robin of questions like this. They were completely serious.

I remember meeting highly accelerated students from all over the country in DC when I was a senior. One of the things that the program had to explain to everyone that wasn't from NY, and I remember specifically that the group from NC had issues with this, was that NY was mostly rural and only rural NY was represented and that NYC was not a city that covered the entirety of teh state.

And yet, even after that, people were confused. Isn't all of NY a city?

Seriously? It would have to be a city of several billion people. You could fit the entire planet into a city that size.

The degree to which this was obviously impossible had no effect. Their upbringing left them convinced that "rural" in NY meant the Bronx or something.

As if all of Washington is Seattle.... Nice.

Get over North Bend and it's farm land for millions of square miles. 😐

    • Skype for Business - external connection issues

So we had Lync setup and working (except external connectivity) internally as a proof of concept. It didn't get approved so it just sat. Then we got the go ahead to setup Skype for Business. The topology is all setup, upgraded from Lync, firewall rules stayed in place. Good to go pretty much. Internal works fine. We've done every support step we can find, short of calling in Microsoft just yet. There is something important I must be missing. Any ideas what we're missing to establish external connectivity? Topology is broken out to 3 servers... Skype, Skype-Edge, and Skype-Reverse-Proxy (the topology that Microsoft lists as officially supported). Also, we have Skype for Business on-premise (not hosted).

If you're going to go as far as retirement, then you have to go all the way and start building tons of retirement towers to put those retirees.

What's wrong with that? I don't see the negative there.

That is, in fact, what is happening here in Canada. Boomer generation is getting close and with foresight retirement homes and long term care homes are popping up in droves.

Seems a tab too early for that. First boomers are just seventy this year!

Given the state of our health care system I consider this preparation to be an honest to god miracle

What age do people typically start going into homes? 75? 80?

It's not always age. You also have to figure in dementia if the resident is unlucky enough to have that disease.

    • Exchange Emails - Pending

We're on Exchange 2013. Weird issue we've been having with only one distribution list. When you email a certain distribution list, everything goes through fine. If you try and send that distribution list a calendar invite, it is in a pending state until it fails 48 hours later. I blew it away and created a new distribution list (on the Exchange server, which populates to AD just fine) with a new name. The users in the list are all active employees and accounts are all fine. This should be a crazy simple function. Any ideas why emailing the group works fine but sending an invite is pending?

Man, I would love to go to this. But I don't get PTO, let alone paid travel to super awesome conventions.

How many (unpaid) vacation days do you get a year? Don't many Americans get something like four?

Unpaid vacation days? Well I worked on Christmas. That probably answers your question about time off. I'm lucky if I get the weekend off without someone bugging me about stuff that can wait till Monday.

I promote ML to people where it's possible. There are a TON of people at school that see my Spiceworks and various tech polos and strike up conversation but I always mention they definitely need to get on ML along with SW. @scottalanmiller

We need to get you some ML swag!

In fact, there needs to be ML swag!

I would like ML swag, too.

If I had a ML polo, I'd wear it all over. I wear my Spiceworks polo every week and it sparks tons of conversation.

      ML needs a swag store!
