It's a means of discourages kids who like math, that's for sure. It might help someone who is struggling, but those who struggle with math are unlikely to use much of it, no matter how much they are pushed to learn, in high school. Most jobs require essentially no math and most of the population retains no math from high school after graduation. The only real bad outcome is if those who do enjoy and excel at math are discouraged. That kind of forcing people to show steps makes math students, especially, reconsider math and science jobs to a large degree because it discourages them from taking math in college or, in many cases, going on to college at all.

It hurts those that we should be encouraging (in math) the most while encouraging those that aren't self motivated, are trying to cheat or just aren't that interested.

Very true, at least from my own perspective.

What can you expect? The American model for education promotes mediocrity, while giving lip service to excellence.

      2. Jenga champion? I seem to remember @pchiodo and I going the distance on one game. Did anyone else accomplish that? You must be referring to quantity, not quality. LOL

I'm really glad you were both there. It was a great time, and you were both a lot of fun to hang with. Here's to hoping you can join us again for MC2017!

I will not stand idly by and let the legitimacy of my Tell-Your-Lawyers-To-Stop-Sending-Letters Jenga Championship be questioned, @art_of_shred. We'll have to settle this next year.

      And so we shall.ðŸĪš

    • RE: Knuckleheads.......

Nothing gets accomplished without some level of risk taken. It may be volatile, but isn't that the nature of something that is truly free? Regulation may sterilize the market for investor's purposes, but that eliminates the "free" nature of it and just makes it another government institution. Any great move/paradigm shift has winners and losers. The winners (speaking of investors here) take the same risk as the losers, but with 1 part savvy and 3 parts blind luck, someone comes out on top and some get beat up. That's the beauty of the true free-market. It's vicious, but tenacity pays off. In my opinion, the last thing we need is more regulation of anything. Those who are willing to sacrifice freedom in exchange for security will end up with neither, but instead, tyranny.

@scottalanmiller I don't even think the status quo model fits so well anymore. It's a self-esteem building exercise that is more worried about not offending fringe groups than anything to do with education. It might not be a bad shift, seeing as how fantastic of a job it was doing in the education department. Oh, and don't get me wrong. I am not supporting the whiner-coddling that goes on for the sake of the fringe groups, either.

We can argue which certs are good and which ones are bad, but they definitely aren't hurtful to you

If the IT industry were to standardize job titles, do you believe that certain certifications and/or degrees would have to be included in those descriptions?

What is the likelihood that this is even possible?

It could happen. Some committee needs to be formed to create the standard, and then the industry has to adopt it, at least in part. It's like spreading a rumor. If you get enough people to do it, it can take on a life of its own. That's how a lot of "standards" have come to be that.

It's a 1/2 height rack. The drywall is still unfinished, but not "fresh". It's been there over a year now, but it's not in the main part of the house. If build/repair everything, as well as do home remodeling on the side, so if it don't need finishin', it don't get no finishin'.

Yeah, kind of. I do own/operate a custom cabinetry business, and my workshop rivals Norm's to a decent extent. He has a few cooler toys than I do, but some of mine a better than his. I can settle for that. 🙂

Spelt is an alternate spelling for UK/Aussie English 🙂
