      Why EXT4?

Is there something wrong using ext4 instead of xfs besides Red Hat/CentOS using it by default?

As with everything, reverse the question - is there something right about it? XFS is faster and more stable. What does EXT4 have going for it? EXT4 is not a bad filesystem, but "not bad" isn't a reason to choose a filesystem. Which one is best for your environment? I don't know any server environments where EXT4 is good enough to be considered - because it would have to be meaningfully better than XFS in some area for that to be useful.

Looks like I just need to read up on ext4 vs xfs.

      https://wiki.js.org/

Now this looks like a WIKI that I would actually use. I've been searching for one that has a good way to display code snippets. (like the way code is displayed here on ML) This looks like it does the trick.

I've not used it yet, but I've been looking for something just like this for a while. Hoping to deploy it soon.

Fingers crossed. I really want a better internal documentation tool. OneNote and SharePoint are getting too cluttered.

      OMG I can't stand OneNote.

I used to like it. But as documentation grows, it quickly becomes cluttered.

    • FreePBX, Remote user, and registration

I have a remote user, on our FreePBX system. They recently bought a new modem, and are no longer to make/receive calls from their remote phone. The only thing that changed, was the new modem. The model number is a Motorola MG7315.

      Symptoms:

      1. The phone registers, but the Asterisk console reports that there are serious network troubles as soon as it registers.
      2. It stays registers for a brief time, and then becomes unreachable. (visible from the Asterisk console)
      3. Whenever the user tries to make a phone call, the phone becomes unreachable. (visible from the Asterisk console)

      Troubleshooting steps so far:

      1. In the settings of the modem, there is an option to turn off SIP ALG, which I already did. No change.
      2. There is an option to add the phone to a DMZ on the modem. I've done this also. No help

      Any ideas for further troubleshooting?

I'm still evaluating https://wiki.js.org/. I have it installed and setup, and I love the interface, but have not had a lot of time to really test it out in a production environment yet.

Wordpress is definitely a solid choice, especially with the right plugins.

Follow up on this, the user went out and got a new modem. Immediately resolved the issue, so I was never able to test if STUN would have resolved it or not. I'll keep this in mind though for next time.

@jaredbusch said in EdgeRouter "Smart" QoS issue:

@fuznutz04 said in EdgeRouter "Smart" QoS issue:

The ER-Lite boxes have a "Smart" QoS wizard. The way I've always understood it, it works as follows:

You fill in the line speeds of the service you are actually paying for.

      Example:0_1516985914606_QoS.png

The above screenshot is from my home, so the speed in the boxes doesn't line up with the rest of the details here, it's just and example.

So if you pay for 100/10, that's what you put in the boxes. I do this at the office, at home, and other clients. However, I ran into a situation where using the Smart QoS wizard, actually really limits the DL speed.

I did a speed test with the QoS setting ON, and got the proper UL speed, but was limited to 50-60 DL speed. As soon as I removed QoS, I got the proper speed of 100 DL and 10 UL.

Has anyone experience this before on the Edge Routers? Perhaps @JaredBusch ?

This is normal and expected because traffic policies and the smart queue policies both force traffic to not be offloaded.

The CPU in the ERL cannot process traffic faster than ~60mbps without the offload functionality.

Well alright then. Simple explanation. I’ve never run into this, because we have such slow speeds around here. So this would be an example where I could upgrade to the next model. Perhaps the ER4? I haven’t read the spec sheets yet on them.

Correct using a different model is what is required to obtain better speeds in this situation.

The ERX will perform better because it has a better CPU than the ERL. But it has less memory which leads to other problems.

The ER4 is light years ahead of the ERL by comparison due to the newer CPU.

OK great. Looks like I'll need to start recommending these now. First, I want to get one for myself at my office. Did you manage to get your hands on one yet?

Yep. I have to decide weather to upgrade or jump ship myself soon. Realized the Church I work part time at is still on 2012 R2. It's only being used as a file server right now, so it's probably jump ship.

Yep. I'll be doing a clean install as well when I'd ready. No way am I upgrading in place. πŸ™‚

That software works great. I used the "best practices" template, and re-scanned. Now I get a rating of A. Not A+. I'm assuming it is becuase of the weak cipher suites below in the results. I'm surprised they were not disabled when using the "best practices" template.
