You could find so many kids interesting in this at a local LAN center. I wish I knew someone to recommend.
What's a LAN center?
Vidya games. That's what got me building my first PC when I was 12
They have those things still? I've never seen one in Upstate NY and the last one I saw anywhere was in Scranton like a decade ago. That's not a thing in this area, that's for sure.
They have two of them in Rochester.
That's a long way away, and a big city to only have two! And do people interested in computers use those these days... or just people who don't have Internet access at home. Like Internet cafes were for the high tech people twenty years ago, but for the poor and homeless today.

Pretty much. It was fun to go to them in college and play in a LAN environment. But the per hour cost was a lot compared to just having your own computer and Steam.

yeah, and I think that most viable candidates will have their own computers.

Yeah everyone I know is well outside the age range. Between 16-19.

I don't think that the ages are set in stone.
-
No they really aren't just need to actually want to be involved and actually do it.
-
It's amazing how rarely people looking to built their careers are really that interested in them.
-
With the week I've been having I might be interested... How much does it pay? Can I work remotely? Do I have to interface with any Microsoft software?
-
If the age 13-15 is set in stone I can shave...

Actually, on a more serious note, I've got a friend that is thinking about leaving the insurance industry to pursue IT. Is this something that might be open to people pursuing IT as a career alternative? If so I might point him in this direction to see if he is interested. He's already started following along with Scott's book on Linux Administration to try and get the basics down, so he has some familiarity with the ML community (I think).

That's an option, is he really interested in actual interning, though? I mean NTG really can be a rapid path for building a career, but few adults, especially those with established careers, really want to take the time to do that. What aspects of IT is he looking into? Have him post on this thread.

I believe he's initially looking to generalize, more with a focus on Unix/Linux based systems, and possibly eventually move into doing some coding/programming.
His primary goal is to build knowledge and experience to eventually transition out of the Insurance industry and into an IT position with better opportunity for growth. I think he's already hit the ceiling at his current position, and aside from transitioning into Management (which I don't think he is interested in) really can't go any further.
I'll mention this thread to him the next time we speak and have him chime in if he's interested.

Shoot him an email, if he's interested at building up a resume of experience (and a real resume) doing intern work, he might be pretty happy with what we can offer.

If age is not a problem, I would really love to intern for you guys.
I have never been an intern =), in Mexico or at least in my state we are required by our Universities to do "servicio social" and/or "prácticas profesionales". If we get lucky they sometimes can be like one of your internships I guess, but most of the time we are doing them in a unrelated area, being treated as free labor (no proper learning experience), turned into the copy/coffee boy/girl or many just pay to get someone to sign their required reports because you work and don't have time for school, work and servicio social.
I was actually a soccer player that was my paying job from age 13 to 25, so I started pretty late working in IT. I didn't get to have a proper internship (didn't have time my job gave me almost no free time) and my University knowledge wise was really just a waste of time as @scottalanmiller knows.
I am the sole IT generalist of my current job, I manage a main office with 20 users in a Windows 2008 domain and a remote office with 10 regular users and a small 60 seat call center with 10 of those computers running Ubuntu Mate 15.10, computers are pretty basic only 1gb Of ram we get much better performance with Linux than the windows pcs and we really only use Web Apps so I hope I can migrate the rest to Linux soon.
Main and remote offices both have kvm vm hosts with md raid 10 on HP ML110 G7 (really envy everyone who gets to play with bigger and proper servers). Small number of vms, AD and file servers, Linux jump boxes with zero tier and Elastix 2.5 vm for IT department (only me) communication (hate our Panasonic and Alcatel pbxs) .Both offices have pfsense firewalls as their default gateways connected with 200/200 Internet providers.
Basically I am a self learner who really loves IT and Linux. I am eager to keep on learning and building my career in IT. I truly believe being an intern in Ntg would be a great opportunity to advance my knowledge and have some great mentoring. I would really liked to be considered for the position =).
-
@Romo I would be happy to consider you. I will be back at my desk Monday morning around 9am est.
-
@Minion-Queen thank you
-
Im 19, new to IT have a little under my belt. not much. I started to love computers and really pick on how things worked with them around 7th grade while taking an IT essentials course that focused on cisco networking systems, from there every chance i had i was on a computer poking around and seeing what they could do as i learned more, i wanted to do more.
-
@WrCombs I would be happy to speak with you to see if you would really like to jump in on the intern ship.
-
@Minion-Queen im open for a majority of this week!
