I was at Applebee's talking about this last night. Businesses talk so much about building relationships with clients and driving sales, etc. However, if a business doesn't have solid people behind it that back it and work hard for it, it will inevitably fail. This is one reason I always respected Wegmans. Their philosophy on the fact that if they make their employees happy, they'll just naturally provide good customer service makes so much sense.

It also made me think about things like how when you work in a customer service driven business, managers should always default to taking their employee's side. This is not unconditional, and shouldn't be. But if a customer is upset with an employee, the manager should always try to calm the customer down, but be supportive of the employee until they can be proven to why they shouldn't be. This promotes trust internally between staff and management and fosters good relationships. In turn, good customer service will be had. I've seen this done both ways at one of my jobs and I can tell you what a difference it makes in terms of how well the store runs.
