English is the primary language last I checked (or at least thought), why is it considered wrong to teach students to assimilate?

The Hempstead school board won't renew the contract of a principal who instructed her students not to speak Spanish, in a rapidly-evolving district where more than half of the students, like many Texas schools, are now Hispanic.
Hempstead Middle School Principal Amy Lacey was placed on paid administrative leave in December after reportedly announcing, via intercom, that students were not to speak Spanish on the school's campus. The Hispanic population of the rural area, roughly 50 miles northwest of Houston, is growing quickly, and Latino advocates say that it's important to allow Spanish in public schools.
"When you start banning aspects of ethnicity or cultural identity," says Augustin Pinedo, director of the League of United Latin American Citizens Region 18, "it sends the message that the child is not wanted: 'We don't want your color. We don't want your kind.' They then tend to drop out early."
Such fast growth is pervasive in Texas, says Steve Murdock, a professor at Rice University and director of the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas. Half of all Texas public-school students are now Hispanic, he notes. "When you look at issues related to education in Texas, to a great extent, you're looking at the education of Hispanic children."
Similar growth patterns, he says, hold true for the rest of the United States: "It's not just Texas."

Well consider that English was turned down as being the official language in the US and some US areas it is not primary and Texas is rapidly becoming a primarily Spanish speaking state.
So if you want to enforce English today, it suggests that you will have Spanish forced in you in the near future. I think being a multilingual society is the best option.

@scottalanmiller I'm in no way trying to insinuate that only one language be spoke always. I encourage people to try to be even just a little bilingual. My concern is that too many people are tossing English aside and never bothering to learn it.

@Bill-Kindle A public institution such as a school has no right to ban a language from being spoken. They can require that classes be taught in a specific language, but you cannot tell me that I may not speak another language in the hallways to a friend. That is a discrimination against the students based on their ethnic heritage.

I understand that and learning English has a lot if value. But let's flip the case. Texas has been natively Spanish speaking for most of a millennium. It's not English being cast aside but Spanish. It's those speaking English who have failed to assimilate to the local culture.
But that will pass. Spanish has ruled the peninsula for over 500 years. English in Texas was dominant in a small area for a short time. It is visibly in the process of being marginalized there.

In Europe, regional languages are sacred. In the US we are still struggling to define are opinion of languages. We speak a broken version of English primarily and have new world Spanish as a massive secondary language. But there are a lot of regional languages too. I'm only two generations away from a family that spoke German here for a couple hundred years.

I mostly agree with this, but i don't agree that banning another language is tantamount to ethnic discrimination. God forbid it's ever found that students are talking in another language about doing bad things in a school (think bombings/shootings, etc) You might find a public outcry for a national language 'for the safety of our children' shhhheesh.

Oh my gosh, did you catch the part about vandals damaging the break lines of 3 school buses? What the crap is wrong with these people? You're mad at the district for firing a racist principal so you put children's lives in danger? I really, really hope that the FBI finds out who did it, and that they get prosecuted for a hate crime.
