Unread Instead of Notifications

Hey guys,
While I have this page up probably 70% of my day, there are times I go to another tab and leave it there for a bit. One thing I've noticed is that, like Facebook, the tab name will change to have a (1) or whatever in it when you have new notifications. However, to be perfectly honest, with the way the site operates now due to its coding, I'd prefer if the number displayed was for unread instead of notifications. While I know that might not seem to make as much sense, as one is unread threads and the other directly correlates to your personal account, there are times I have 3 or 4 unread threads or threads with updates but no tags, etc and therefore no notifications.
I know there's probably nothing to be done, but is there any way to change this? What does everyone else think?

I completely agree - unread is better than notifications - it does not matter that I have 1 upvote and 4 downvotes... I really only want to know about new replies in general.

I completely disagree. I only want notifications as directly related to me because I was called out in a post or a post was upvoted.
I do not want or care about unread message counts.

I would prefer some kind of blend. I want to know about unread + mentions. I don't care about a lot of what goes into the notifications, that list is way too busy for me to use. But there is info from it that I want and really can't find because there is so much of it.

Mentions is redundant, because if someone mentioned you, that means there is a new post, which will show up in unread.

Good point I was thinking that there was overlap but I guess if there is a mention there is ALWAYS an unread. So that makes sense.

I only want to see things related to me in notifications, and unread on the unread page, just like it is now.

I find the unread to be what I use. But few people mention me, so maybe that is why.

I use the unread when I'm on site as the point of origin from where start. I like the notifications the way they are.
I'm also mentioning @Reid-Cooper because he needs mentioning.
