Extended vacation
-
Hi,
I'm the only IT guy on this branch and I can say that I'm very busy during busy months. But during off months (Sept to October) we usually schedule an IT project or maintenance.
Have anyone here tried to apply for extended vacation like 2 months? On this company the usual employee vacation is 2 to 3 weeks.
What is the best reason if I will ask for a 2 months vacation? I'm planning to start a side small business but I'm not comfortable to use it as a reason here.
What you guys think? I could also offer that I can work from home during vacation if needed. Thou it will be 12 hours time difference (on the other side of the globe).
Usually IT from other branch visit me if I have big projects so I'm expecting that they will visit my branch if it needs an on-site support during my vacation. -
Everyone deserves a vacation. You should never need to make an excuse for it.
-
If you DO need an excuse, being on the other side of the globe is plenty to make. You don't need to bring up a business. Just that it takes SO long to travel there and you want to make the time and cost make sense for traveling to somewhere that you really want to go.
-
I would not normally offer to work while on vacation. Are they going to pay for your vacation?
-
No, they will not pay for my vacation. Its my expense :). Thou i will have few paid vacation leaves (2-3 weeks) the rest is unpaid.

Definitely do not offer to be free labour then.
-
Do you have any MSPs around you? Many of them offer vacation support. So you wouldn't be expected to be on call during your time off.
-
@coliver No, we dont have MSPs here.

Well here, we don't have 2-3 weeks of vacation at once either. Let alone even the thought of taking off for 2 months.
As a side note, in the US, the word vacation typically implies paid leave time.

Would you need them to be "there"? What parts need to be done locally for a short period of time?

Yeah, that's more like "voluntary furlough."

You don't - but I've taken two 3 week vacations since I've been here.

A very few people in the US get to do this.

Hard pressed to get an actual non-work 1 week vacation here. The people try hard not to contact me but still do 95% of the time.
-
I take the last 2-2.5 weeks off every year. I get 4 weeks and hardly ever use it all during the year so I lump it in at the end of the year since we're always slow from December through February. But, of course, I'm basically always on-call.

OH - I never go a vacation more than 3 days without a phone call or 10. But in general, They are pretty short calls.

The 2-3 weeks i mentioned is a paid leave. I'm not expecting the hotel to require onsite support during my vacation. But it seems some employee get used to providing service to VIPs and sometimes themselves acts like a VIP aka "difficult diva user". At one time i need to ride a buggy go up 3 floors just to press or click a button (added to the list of strange, funny and sometimes annoying world of IT Support).
