Where can I pickup a cheap domain?

I use GoDaddy, it's not bad.

      CloudFlare

Did you manage to get in? I've been on the waiting list for months and even paid to be moved up, and they've not opened to me yet.

Not yet, but if this guy is just getting ready it could be a valid option.

Also, you have not been waiting months. The service has not been available that long.

I've been waiting months since they announced it. It is, AFAIK, not available at all yet.

Announced on Sept 27, so, you win. Months (plural) barely. 73 days, 2.5 months.

What do you lot think so far? Started an hour or two ago.

          http://82.13.39.198/validate/demo/index.asp

I have not developed anything for a long time (over 10 years), so its not pretty. I'll make it pretty later, including improved wording, and some nice images of our venue.

You should only be able to get through the verify initial page with the code 'abc' or 'def' at the moment...

What do you think? My fiancee doesnt like the idea of including the menu in all the invites, or having each person to call us, email, text or post back - so wants a webpage where they all have a code to enter and select their meal...

You didn't listen. Don't do this. Use Wordpress and some plugins.

Why? Like I said, i'm doing this partly for fun as mentioned in the OP (nostalgia from years ago, specifically). So why use wordpress? I'm not interested in wordpress or plugins and didnt ask for that on my OP.

I hate to be that guy and I know you said you want to host your own wedding site, but there are services that makes it easier like WeddingWire and The Knot.

I agree with Jared on this, Why invent the wheel, plenty of plugins to use with Wordpress. Plus if you haven't developed code for a long time security comes into play as well.

If you don't want to use WordPress there are other sites out there that specialise in this like @black3dynamite has posted.

It's not for commercial use and he wants to learn or practice something specific. If this was for a business, I'd concur. But it's not, it is for fun. So doing what he is doing is fine. The extra time or effort are not negatives in this case.

                      ASP is a negative 100%.

Learning it with modern tools though seems to make sense - so doing it by hand seems crazy when everyone is deploying WP etc sites today. It's great to learn - why not learn what most people are doing then.. like WP?

Learning isn't always for the purpose of being useful.

Fair Enough, even if it's for fun, it's still going to be live on the internet, so security will still be important.
Why not use PHP and MariaDB?
