Nest Secure: Thoughts?

So Nest came out with its own security system that comes with a base station, 2 door/window sensors (Nest Detect), and 2 fobs (Nest Tag) for $500. It will tie into your nest app on your phone so that you can arm/disarm the system while you are entering/exiting. Extra Detects are $60 and Tags are $25. You can attach cameras and doorbells as well, but are separate. For $5/month, you can get cell/wireless monitoring.
Setting aside any "Big Brother" paranoia, what do you think? Would you do it?
I'd take the plunge. At least you know Nest is going to roll out security updates, at least I think they've had a decent track record of that so far. I'd stay away from any company that can't or won't roll out updates when needed.

Nope, its Nest. Doesn't release security patches to known issues.

When considering home IoT things - does it work without internet connectivity to the mothership?
Yes --> investigate
No --> dumpster fire, avoid

I've got instructions on how to use a Raspberri Pi to do this already. The door sensor is a really simple thing to get working, and can be used for window opening as well (but not glass break.)

You can even use smaller boards like Adafruit's Huzzah wifi or bluetooth boards for remote sensors.

An Intel nuc with some form of minimal linux and a web interface. Connect to the devices with MQTT.

I'm not convinced any of these features interest me outside of intelligent control of heating / cooling and hands free door operation. The last one would be very cool connected to an RFID reader so I can have my hands full and press my ass (wallet cheek) to it and the door pops open.
What's the draw with this stuff?

I'm not so much considering the security stuff. Really don't care too much about it. But the heat/cool, lighting control, door control, and habit learning piece of it would be handy to have especially if I am doing something green field.

Could start out with Home-assistant.io and develop an alarm system off of that.

This is my memory - Travis, go back and listen to Security Now.. Steve was basically trashing them for being part of google yet so utterly insecure.
