Add hard drive in server / use SAS/SATA on different arrays
-
Hey guys, I have a DL380p g8 server I got from an upgrade.. I've already added 32GB ram for total of 64. I am going to use it as a home ESX Lab server. On one of the VMs I want to install my UBNT Camera NVR software and UBNT unifi software. I need to know if I can use the same controller, but add a second array using SATA drives (The first array is using HPE SAS drives). I know since they won't be HPE authentic it will throw iLO a flag. But the drives will only hold the NVR recordings, and would be 2 drives using raid 1, so I don't want to spend money on high end drives. Also got to figure what else I want to load on it and do with it. Have a nice little 12u server rack coming in to put it in. Sure hope this gets me interested in IT again.

I know that you can't mix and match SAS and SATA on the same array. I believe that you can between arrays though.

@scottalanmiller That's what I have read, but wanted confirmation. I didn't want to buy anything and it didn't work. I needed expert advice from the mangos. ^_^

Unfortunately I've never tested that so I can't say for absolute certain.

Having 1 SAS / 1 SATA array (using Dell drives) on 1 controller works on Dell servers. Can't speak for HP. Maybe a FW upgrade would help? Or maybe using HPE drives would make a difference?

I haven't touched an HP server in 15+ years, so no specific help there.

So nothing critical running..

Gen 8, I'm pretty sure that that is picky about real HPE drives.
