Was thinking Fedora as recommended by @DustinB3403.
Right now I have Windows 10 Pro, was trying to test in Oracle Virtual Box but with many failed attempts: wouldn't reboot, was constantly running slow and freezing, install wouldnt complete, and I am really tired of fighting with it.
Want to try KVM to test Unifi Controller,
Can anybody point me in the right direction or provide a walk through?
      Thanks

Start with a basic install of Fedora 26 workstation.

Are you trying to get Virtual Box to run on Windows 10? Should do fine. That is what I have used...

The VM starts up fine, but hangs when completing the installation. Better off just learning on a type1 hypervisor rather than VBOX anyways if this ends up turning into a production system. (down the road)

                  um WTF?
You have windows 10, jsut enabled Hyper-V role and build your VM's.

KVM has nothing to do with running a UniFi controller. That just goes in an Ubuntu VM.

This I said was an option, using hyper-v. I don't see the point in not learning a different system though as he's getting into IT.

Hence the choices of hyperv, kvm, xen

Yeah, the issue was specifically something with vbox and the VMs was working with, he's new and learning.

I agree that Hyper-V likely makes the most sense here. Especially as dual booting was mentioned which will be a huge pain and distraction.

An issue that may come up is I don't believe he has admin access to install roles.

He might, but not from what I saw.

The stated goal is learning Unifi. Do that without mixing in unrelated solutions.

Yet he can be allowed to add an completely uncontrolled OS on his desktop?

Not in any shop I control.

The point is that whoever is in charge of his PC should never allow this.

But does have access to reinstall the OS? That would be weird.

Apparently i dont have enough space for a fedora dual boot.. @JaredBusch do you have a walkthrough on how to use hyper-v?

I believe i have full admin rights of this device, @Dashrender would be able to tell me differently seeing how i bought this computer from him and installed Windows 10.

You just "install the Hyper-V role" under roles.
