Setup Strongarm.io at the home office
-
I setup an account this morning with Strongarm.io and updated my router to point to their DNS instead of google.
Have not had time to snapshot my windows VM and try to break things yet.
The one thing I wish they had in their console is a way to add an external list of blocked domains for family content filtering purposes.
Looks great that I should be able to go to a malware site and get stopped.
Less great that I cannot also use the service for selective content filtering without adding in blocked domains manually.

So what is there business purpose?
Solely from your description, it sounds like a competitor to OpenDNS.

Yes, they are basically a competitor to Cisco Umbrella (formerly known as OpenDNS Umbrella).
-
@JaredBusch How is Strongarm treating you for home use? I am using OpenDNS right now for home (the free version) and have had zero issues so far.

That's interesting. The issue with opendns at home was always the way it screwed with Netflix steaming since it fooled the CDN (not just Netflix, Youtube etc)
I wander if they do anything better on that front...

@bigbear I've been running openDNS for about 6 months now at home. I don't run into any issues with Netflix, Youtube, or anything else. What issues were you having specifically?

It works fine. I have no issues because I am not getting any infections.
I have my ERL pointing to my Pi-Hole which points to Strongarm.

You can google, it was the same issue for everyone. Media distribution through Akamai networks relies on DNS info to decide what the closest place is to stream to you front
I doubt OpenDNS ever solved this, if it's not a problem it's likely that netflix and the like changed their methods of deciding where you are.
David Ulevitch liked to remain blissfully unaware of his technology issues

I also have StrongArm at home with my Sonicwall and UBiquiti APs and have no problems with any CDN.

That sounds like a quick weekend project. Might have to try that.

Just set this up for my home network. Supplied my work email and a personal cell #. Within 20 mins, I received a phone call from them at my non-supplied work #. Guess I should have used my gmail address to avoid that.

Are you certain nothing auto filled that you didn’t expect or something like that because I’ve never had contact from them by means of something I did not supply. And I’ve signed up more than one account from more than one address

I didn't get a call either from them.

Now that is also highly unexpected. There are aggressively trying to add playing so if somebody signs up for a trial they’re going to contact them

I didn't do a trial, I opened a personal account.

Nowadays with things like hunter.io its pretty easy to get that info from a company name. The API cross references other data so a name and company name could yield everything else.

AFAICS. I went back and confirmed that my cell # was on file with them.

Is there a difference? I only saw the free trial option even for home use.

I didn't get a call, so I am not sure why then.

What are their advantages and disadvantages versus opendns?

You don't have to deal with Cisco.
