MangoLassi Meetup in NYC

I'm now in doubt about going. just got the new car insurance bill it more than doubled
Hard to justify spending $200 in travel and $200+ in lodging when compared to that.If anyone from the STL area or anything along the path in between ever pipes in about sharing the ride it would make it a lot simpler decision again.

For anyone new/nervous/overwhelmed by NYC, let me know, and I'd be willing to meet up at your point of ingress to help with the transition.
I was mostly worried about paying for parking and such and was thinking to get a room in jersey and train in. That or a hotel that includes parking on the island, but meh I think that might be a bit higher.

@Katie might be able to give you some good advice here on this one.
-
@JaredBusch From what direction are you coming? Staying in NJ can be much cheaper. There's a few reasonably priced hotels in that part of town. Let me see what I can track down.
-
@Katie I would be coming in on I-78 A Kayak search turns up a few ~$110 places and I have not even looked hard yet.
Looking at the transit map, I was thinking any of the NJT lines into Penn Station would work.

-
Well after telling my boss my plans, they have changed... I am not driving..
-
So now I need a place to stay. Any recommendations closer to the $100 price point? I'll be arriving ~8:30pm to LGA on Friday night and can take transit anywhere from there. Web search tells me to head to Jersey. and so did @Katie when I was planning to drive.
-
Might be worth staying in Queens so that you aren't transferring from there to Jersey and back again. That's a lot of transit. Queens should have some options. Sadly I don't know queens though.
-
Have fun with the meet up. I'd really like to come but it's just a bit too far for a leisurely weekend drive.
Just for lulz,
My closest city to NYC
City furthest from NYC -

It's to late this year, but I can probably fit it in the training budget for next.

Hm, $100? Are you open to hostels? You can probably stay at one for <$100. There's the HoJo in Queens for $127. It's walking distance to the Long Island Railroad, or you can catch a taxi to a subway. Disclaimer: I haven't stayed there myself.
Not quite in the $100 range, when staying in NYC, depending on rates, I usually stay at:
Holiday Inn Long Island City http://www.holidayinnmanhattanview.com - New and spiffy, reasonable subway access
Country Inn in Long Island City http://www.countryinns.com/long-island-city-hotel-ny-11101/nynyquee - Clean, quiet, and incredibly easy subway access.
Holiday Inn Express JFK: http://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/us/en/jamaica/nycjm/hoteldetail - They have a shuttle to the airtrain, which connects to the subway. -
@alexntg well I know it is NYC so I was thinking closer to $100 than $200 is all.
The Comfort Inn LGA is $150 pre-tax. I think my boss has the account for Comfort Inn because when we visit one of our customers in Hutchinson, Kansas (5-6 times a year) we stay at the Comfort Inn there. So that would be $135 instead. Emailed him last night to check.

@JaredBusch That's a really good rate for staying in the 5 Boroughs. Elmhurst is kind of out of the way as far as Queens in concerned. You'll have to cross to NYC bridges to get there, traveling form the west. (GWB? Queensboro?) The bridges can get spendy in terms of tolls. Make sure you get a subway pass if it's near a subway stop. ("near" = 10 blocks or so)

Thankfully, he's flying now, so the GWB shouldn't be an issue.
