Under the sea with SMB
-
We all know about Microsoft's proposed undersea data center, but now large-scale data and cloud companies are laying their own undersea cables to gain access in places that wouldn't have high-speed access points.
A proposed deal would put cable in between Hong Kong and Guam, making 100 gigabit the standard in the Pacific, and giving data centers and businesses alike the chance to take advantage and offer greater connectivity for SMBs.
-
When I worked with a major Wall St. bank, we ran our own undersea cables all over the world. It was really interesting to deal with WAN links of that magnitude.
-
@scottalanmiller That's such an interesting undertaking to me, mostly in the construction aspect of it all. I imagine a lot of red tape concerning international waters and land rights?
Probably why only the companies that can afford it do it.
-
I was not a part of the department that dealt with that stuff. But certainly constantly dealing with neat stuff like that.

Do you know how they dealt with continental drift, or was that even a concern?

I'd imagine it wouldn't be a worry as the cable is not taught
-
-
@RojoLoco I'd be lying if I said I didn't try to include a Little Mermaid pun in there.

Don't think it matters. They don't move that much.

I thought that "Continental Drift" was one of the Need for Speed movies....

That's the exact same face I made after the announcement of every single one of those pieces of trash.

Well, except for Tokyo Drift. That reaction was a double from me.
Of course then I found out a Japanese actress I knew from other work was in it, so I watched it eventually. But I never paid directly for it.
-
@JaredBusch one could argue that watching it at all was paying for it

No argument there. Especially for someone that knows a bit ofJapanese language and culture.

Need For Speed is a computer game franchise and sometimes quite good.
I hope youre all talking about Fast and Furious, which IS trash. -
