IOS update on a 5S
-
Ever since I updated my phone I will get random power offs, followed by the white apple on start up, followed by a blue grainy screen and then a power down again. This will cycle for anywhere between 1-5 minutes. I am sometimes able to do a hard shutdown but will still do the same thing. The only thing that can get me to the unlock screen is pressing the home button repeatedly and that works probably 20% off the tries.
Any Help?

Was this the recent update to iOS 10? There is a new 10.1 update that might be worth trying.
I think that you can push an update from iTunes even if the phone itself is not really working.
-
Take it to the Apple Store? As much as we all like to self-diagnose and repair, Apple kind of limits the ability to do much of that with their devices.
-
Try the Update via ITunes first if that doesn't work I think you are stuck with taking it to an Apple store

@art_of_shred I'm 9 months out of the 1 year warranty, is it something they will take care of or will they say out of luck?

@bzeches They are sometime really good about it if it is due to their update. However you might have to pay them if it's a hardware issue.

They sometimes do. If they CAN fix things for you, they will (99% of the time.) Sometimes they fix things out of warranty if they feel that it is their fault or if they feel badly for you or if they have a simple way to do it. Support is actually quite good there.

Definitely worth the attempt.

thank you for the help, working the update now!

It sounds like the update just went badly. I suspect that an update via iTunes will have a very good chance of fixing the issue.

@StrongBad won't take the update it powers down and then gives me an unknown error

That's not good. That suggests hardware failure. Might be worth just getting a new phone. But give the Apple Store a chance, first.
