Something Happen at BackBlaze?
-
Yikes. They were so promising with their newer product. Hopefully, it is just a misunderstanding.
-
I certainly hope nothing "bad" has happened....
I'm curious what has occurred though, maybe the rep that was here was let go and decided to delete their activity here?
-
I think I'd give BB a chance to respond privately before calling them out when the facts are unknown.

They deleting their private communications channel. They chose public, not me. It's not calling them out, it's calling on them.

Aaron just decided to reduce his community profiles and remove his old stuff. He was never an official media rep for them, he just works as one of their sysadmins so I ping him when I see stuff that is relevant. Nothing awry at BackBlaze itself.

Very possibly. No idea, it was super out of character. Best case is that the account was hacked.

He's kind of always been a spokesperson for BB and was active this morning. In fact, he was still active when things got weird. Very, very odd to want to reduce his profile in the midsts of real technical conversations. Like we were discussing virtualization at the clustering level when this happened. Why create content while intending to destroy it all at once? Something is very weird. Like it was two people online at once with the same account.
-
@scottalanmiller I'm talking to him now and he wasn't hacked. Just his decision to cut back for whatever personal reason.

Removing old stuff is a very aggressive move to make. Stopping involvement only requires not staying involved. But he was actively involved during the deletions. But deleting old involvement just for the sake of disrupting conversations is not good. It's an aggressive thing to do. It can happen, but it's normally because someone is angry with people and want to punish the community as a whole. Which can happen, of course, but very weird for someone with good content, for someone currently still creating content and someone whose content as consistently been a representation of a brand. He's worked to promote BackBlaze here, but then suddenly turned on them and was trying to pull out that support retroactively.
Everyone needs the ability to delete things, especially when you might accidentally have said too much, had a typo, exposed something by accident or accidentally said something hurtful. But going back to old conversations to simply remove involvement is spiteful to everyone, blindly. Totally out of character from the person that I know and didn't match the activity going on at the time.

SAM things are cool don't overthink it
I am not an official rep for Backblaze and things are going great for the company. That's better left to the marketing folks. For personal reasons I am limiting my online presence across many sites.
Please don't take my actions of account removal as meaning anything other than Aaron is closing down an account. One of my senior support guys has posted here too

Cutting back isn't the same as trimming out the past, though. Cutting back makes total sense, people do that all of the time. But trimming yourself out historically is totally different.

I was very surprised, we were in the middle of talking about virtualization.

Hey gang Yev from Backblaze here. You might remember me from such places as...YCombinator or...Reddit...or...the internet. Nothing terrible is going on at Backblaze. Aaron is still with us and we are still doing great. I'm usually the "spokesperson" for Backblaze, but because I'm not very technical, and because Aaron already had a presence here, he'd pop in and out on occasion and impart some of his knowledge. Sometimes, he'd ask for guidance and we'd work together to come up with good answers.
Not sure why Aaron removed his account and content, but that's up to him as an internet citizen. If you have Backblaze related questions, go ahead and ping me and I'll try and respond whenever I can, though, if the questions are about actual Systems Administration, please be prepared for me to take a long time to respond while I read Sys Admining for Dummies and learn a bit more about it. If you just want to chat, I made this account and will keep an eye on stuff from time to time.

@YevP Awesome @YevP obviously we are sad to see @aaron leaving us as he's been a contributor for years here and a friend for many years before that. But BackBlaze gets a lot of love and a lot of users here so it's an exciting turn of events to have Aaron's departure signal a more official representation from BB. Glad to have you here and excited to see more information and interaction from BB.
Lots of BB users and B2 is such an intriguing service and I think fits this community's needs so well.

@scottalanmiller Yea, happy to be here! Mango Lassi's been something I've known about for a while, but just like some very technical subreddits I tried to stay away as my expertise is more cat memes and silly videos - but I'm here now, so feel free to ping me when/if you got a Backblaze question! I'll do my best
