The real thing here: Unless you have actually used survival skills in a real setting (reading about them doesn't count 99% of the time) the chances of you actually being able to survive a stressful situation are pretty slim. Book smarts will not do you a whole lot of good in bad situations where you have to react quickly.
Yup, pretty much the military will be who survive. Only people trained AND experienced in anything even remotely similar. A few others will survive, but the first hours will wipe out essentially everyone. No matter how many great ideas you have, those first hours will kill you almost certainly so no amount of "you know what would work well" will help.
I was in the military. All of your meals are provided. It's not like they really teach your survival in the traditional sense. My AIT wasnt mountain man

I imagine it also depends on which military, I came from a newly formed country which was extremely poor, but the Americans did drop some MREs from time to time. That's how I discovered the other love of my life, Tabasco sauce.

Sure, but there's more what you should've learned. Discipline, spirit of comradeship, how to handle a gun (properly), how to take shelter (or build something that will do for at least some time), some basic tactics, recon, ...

Yeah. If Tabasco Sauce can make an MRE edible then that is really a testament to it. I'm American

It's really less involved unless you are active duty infantry or a sniper. The hand to hand combat training was pathetic as an example. I learned so much more just fighting kids in my neighborhood when I was a little kid in a rough area.

I've been in the navy and we didn't care much about the "green stuff". There's no wood on the water (maybe below, but that's another story). But we learned at least the basics like the army or airforce guys.

Nothing is as bad as the MRE Burritos. They are almost 100% plastic. It's so bad.

Researching AppSec right now. Kind of interested in learning how to code in Go. Anyone have any good resources?

There are a couple of cakes in our MREs. You can't really eat them, but you can use them to
- lit a lantern (seriously, that's not a joke!)
- abuse it as a weapon
- stuff a hole in a wall
- use it as a bridge for a platoon of Leopard 2's (or M1 Abrams, doesn't really matter in this case)
- use it as fuel for your flux compensator
- ...
But, I can't even say that, M...R...E... B-u-r-r-i-t-o-s. That's going to be a long night full of nightmares.
-
BTW, our combat boot polish is actually easily flammable: Use it with a few cakes and you can cook a small meal.

Installing zsh on that temp sensor pi I built for the integral decimal support missing in bash.

@aaronstuder , Dan is out of the office. Has someone at xByte been in contact with you? If this hasn't already been addressed, I will have his sales associate contact you. @BRRABill is correct, we will make it right!

@travisdh1 Need to install GCC 5 tomorrow on a Pi. Now this won't be fun at all I'm afraid.
Need it for some custom code that was written with heavy use GCC 5 features...

Yuck. I got away with using the older gcc 4:4.6.3-8. Turns out i2c was the basis VESA, SMBus, PMBus, and IPMI were based on, which means it's very, very old.

Good old I2C. I'm still using a driver which I wrote myself like, erm, 10 to 15 years ago?
